Last weekend just the two of us

Happy November! As of today I am officially on maternity leave, since yesterday was my last day of work. I’m currently 38 weeks + 3 days pregnant with a due date of November 13. I have lots of plans for the next almost 2 weeks, but also wouldn’t be disappointed if baby decided to make an early appearance. I guess time will tell 🙂

In the meantime, Eric is back to work for 14 days and goes on days off again on our due date. So it’s entirely possible last weekend was our LAST WEEKEND off together with no babe! Of course I have to recap it, even though we really didn’t do anything too interesting.

Thursday… I did have to work on Friday, however our weekend kind of started on Thursday night as at 6:10pm we made the last minute decision to head to the 6:45pm movie. We saw American Made and it was pretty good. Maybe our last movie in the theatre for awhile!

Friday… I worked most of the day but left early for a chiropractor appointment. Friday night we got vietnamese takeout and my mom and brother came over for a couple of games of Settlers of Catan. We also played some Harry Potter Trivial Pursuit at the end of the night. It was a lot of fun!!

Saturday… we slept in until about 8:30am and then made some breakfast and coffee before heading to our last prenatal class at 10am. Due to Eric’s work schedule we ended up doing private prenatal classes, which were two 2-hour sessions 3 weeks apart. I’m really glad we did them as we learned a lot about the different stages of labour, different kinds of pain medications and different kinds of induction. It’s all information we could have found online, however it was great to have it presented to us and have someone there to discuss it with. Our instructor was also able to check our carseat and make sure it was installed properly.

I can’t really remember what we did the rest of Saturday honestly… I think we just kind of relaxed around the house and watched Stranger Things. Saturday night we made delicious homemade pizza!

Sunday… was another sleep-in day and then lazing around the house all morning. Eric played his game and I read my book. Around 11 we finally got ourselves together and headed out for a walk. We were hoping to do a loop on the local trail system, but it was full of snow and ice from our big snow storm last week so our walk was cut short. It was still a beautiful morning though.

Sunday afternoon I went to my little cousins birthday party and then over to my mom’s house to make my Halloween costume…

It was a total hit at work yesterday, I even won best female costume 🙂

Sunday evening, Eric made us homemade pho for dinner which was delicious! We watched more Stranger Things and went to bed early. I managed to watch all of Season 1 (Eric had already watched it) and Season 2 of Stranger Things from last Wednesday to Monday, so clearly watching that show dominated a lot of our time recently!

And that sums up our potentially last weekend together just the two of us. Pretty laid back and low key, which was honestly perfect. We just hung around the house and relaxed lot and ate yummy food. It was really nice. I am super tired these days and Eric is also pretty tired on his days off from his intense work schedule, so we will take the lower key days!

How was your weekend? What did you get up to?

TGIF – Weekend Edition!

I didn’t take enough photos (or do enough fun things) for a full-fledged weekend recap, so here is a weekend recap TGIF style!

The high of my weekend was the beautiful weather we are having up here! We have woken up to little skiffs of snow twice now (see above picture from last Thursday morning), but it’s always melted by the end of the day and it’s still getting up to around 10 C (50 F) during the day with the sun shining. Considering last year we had full fledged winter by this time I will not complain even a little bit and am continuing to enjoy this as long as it lasts.

I also had a prenatal massage on Saturday, and while it was quite painful and uncomfortable at the time it really helped with some of the aches and pains I’ve been having in my legs and back so the after effects of that could be considered a high of the weekend 🙂

The low of my weekend was waking up with a sore throat yesterday morning. Eric was quite sick last week and had to take a day off work and I was scared I’d caught it. But spending all of Sunday morning on the couch watching Netflix / reading / dozing seemed to have nipped it in the bud. Fingers crossed!

A podcast episode I loved was the Fall Extravaganza episode on The Girl Next Door. It was ah-ma-zing. I have binge listened to the episodes since the beginning over the last 4 months and I’m so sad to officially be all caught up now. However, this may have been my favourite episode yet. I was actually laughing out loud while listening to it on a walk with Chloe. I’m sure people thought I was a bit crazy as I walked along with a giant smile on my face and laughing out loud. The part where Kelsey is ordering their drinks at Starbucks is the best.

And because I was inspired by that episode, here is a photo of my fall decor on our front porch!

For my workouts, I completed a yoga class on Saturday morning, a 20-minute walk Saturday afternoon and another 20-minute walk on Sunday. Definitely slowing down a lot in these last few weeks. It was a vinyasa flow yoga class, but I am definitely not flowing anymore! My yoga practice includes blocks, knees down always and no more downward dog right now BUT it still feels great to move my body and stretch.

The best money I spent was on nothing. I only spent money on boring adult things this weekend like groceries and a mechanic bill for my car going into the shop. I guess if I had to pick something it would be the coffee I bought after yoga on Saturday morning.

My plans this week include my last full work week! My last day of work is October 31, so I still have 2 days next week, but this is my last full 5-day work week before maternity leave. It definitely feels very surreal. I have been working full-time since the spring of 2009, so it seems weird to have a long stretch of no structured work schedule ahead of me. It also feels a bit strange to be going on leave not knowing for sure when this baby is going to come. I could have 1 week, 2 weeks, 3 weeks or even (god forbid) almost 4 weeks off work before we have a baby!

Anyways, it is also Eric’s week off from work so in the evenings and on the weekend we are going to put the finishing touches on the baby’s room, go to our last prenatal class, install our car seat and just do a bunch of baby prep! I am 37 weeks today, so baby could literally come anytime now.

What was the best money you spent on the weekend? What was the high of your weekend?

Labour Day Long Weekend Recap

Hello friends! I had just a lovely Labour Day long weekend so I thought I would recap it on the blog. Even though I just had a week off work, I felt like I really needed this long weekend. Last week was a very busy one at work, and also I just felt like I needed some time at home. Although I will admit, by the evening each day I was ready for Eric to come home since he worked all weekend – but at least he was on day shift so we had evenings together!

Friday night I made us a pasta casserole dish and then we laid on the couch and watched Wonder Woman. I thought it was kind of meh. Was expecting more based on the reviews.

Oh and Friday was also the official start of September…. my favourite month!

Saturday morning I had two catch-up phone calls, one with my running friend Tara from Kamloops and the other one with BFF Jen! It was nice to chat and catch up with both of them. In between phone chats I painted some crates for our entryway (pics below) and cleaned out our fridge. I literally took every single thing out of our fridge and freezer, wiped it out, and then put about half the things back in and threw the other half away. That felt good!

Saturday afternoon I took Chloe to the vet and a walk to enjoy the sunshine. It was raining on Saturday morning but cleared up by the afternoon. After our walk I dropped her at home and went grocery shopping. It felt good to restock the fridge / freezer with some healthy and yummy stuff after cleaning it out.

I spent some time sitting in the sunshine on our back deck Saturday evening reading my book.

In the evening, I got busy in the kitchen and made this recipe: Chef John’s Chicken, Sausage, Peppers and Potatoes.

It’s one of Eric’s favourite recipes and it turned out pretty good if I say so myself 🙂 It’s also a very, very simple recipe with delicious whole ingredients. I recommend it! Saturday night when Eric got home we ate dinner together on the couch while watching a couple episodes of Big Brother. This season is driving me crazyyyyyyyy! I am still 2 episodes behind though, so no spoilers 😉

I did not sleep well on Saturday night so ended up staying in bed until 9am on Sunday. It was glorious! After that, I made coffee and breakfast and curled up on the couch with my book until 11:30am. Also glorious. I decided I’d better get moving so went out into the backyard to do some yard work before going to yoga at 1pm.

The yoga class ended up being quite a strong flow class and I’m super proud of my 30 week pregnant butt for managing it. I was a sweaty mess! Of course I used blocks and lots of modifications.

Here is  a 30 week bump photo for you, by the way.

When I got home from yoga I headed out into the backyard to mow. I have to say, I love mowing the lawn! I plug in a podcast (though apparently the only reason I can hear said podcast is because we have a quiet electric mower) and mow away. It’s so satisfying to see the yard go from being too long to being a nice short, crisp length and it’s also nice to be outside in the sunshine moving my body. I’ll take it over vacuuming or cleaning inside any day 🙂

After I was done mowing the lawn I spent some more time sitting on our  back deck reading, I just love this space so much. I’ve spent many hours out there this summer.

Chloe also loves it. She is such a sunbather.

Sunday evening I wanted to finish getting our entry way set-up. I was again quite proud of myself that I managed to hang a coat rack in the entry way all by myself. I used the measuring tape, drill, level and everything. I have to admit that I did not get it even on the first try so there are two extra drill holes we’ll have to fill in when we eventually do take it down but at least it covers those holes for now 😉

The two cream coloured crates are the ones I referenced painting above.

Webster clearly approves of the new shoe shelf!

Eric picked up pizza on his way home from work on Sunday so we enjoyed pizza together while watching more Big Brother before going to bed. Eric doesn’t get home from work until 7:30pm so it doesn’t leave a lot of time to spend together before it’s bed time.

I actually slept really well on Monday night and was wide awake by 6:30am, so I got up and made coffee and took Chloe for a walk before breakfast. I then spent a few hours on my personal laptop doing a whole bunch of freelance work for the one social media client I currently have (did you know I do freelance social media and marketing consulting?! :))

After I was done doing some computer work I went outside to whipper snip our front “yard”, which is basically just a ton of weeds. After I was done whipper snipping it was time for lunch and more reading on the back deck.

I was in the mood to bake cookies after lunch so I made this Oatmeal Chocolate Chip Cookie Recipe. Sadly, I am still getting the hang of my new oven (it seems to get SUPER hot) and I almost always burn stuff in it, including most of these cookies 🙁 The recipe called for 12 minutes and at 10 minutes they were burnt. The second batch I took out at 8 minutes and they seemed underdone but once they cooled they were perfect.

After baking I ticked off another project off my house ‘to do’ list and cleaned up our mudroom. We have these nice big built in shelves and I took everything off / out of them, wiped them down and reorganized all the stuff. I also threw away a ton of stuff. Feels great to be ticking these house organization projects off the to do list!

In the afternoon I went uptown to pick up a couple of things for the house (including my third pumpkin spice candle in the last 3 weeks… can’t help it, I’m obsessed!) I also picked up a pumpkin spice frappucino, which is not something I’ve ever tried before but I really wanted a PSL and it was wayyyyy too hot for it.

Then it was time for, you guessed it, more back deck reading time!

Once the sun dipped low enough our pergola wasn’t shading me anymore I got super hot so I headed inside to start getting dinner ready for when Eric got home. Our dinner was pretty delicious if I do say so myself. We had burgers and corn made on the BBQ, some pickled beets and salad.

So to be totally honest, while it was a really nice weekend and I got a TON of relaxing in and a TON done around the house, I was also feeling a bit bored by the end of it. I texted Eric and said hopefully when I’m home for a year the baby will keep me more entertained since he works all. the. time. 😛 I’m sure I will be eating my words about being bored soon enough.

I think having some social plans would have helped as I am an extrovert and it was a VERY introverted weekend. I didn’t make any plans because I really felt like I needed some down / alone time, and I did, but I didn’t need 3 straight days of it lol. So lesson learned for next time 🙂

Overall though, a fantastic weekend, especially with the incredible weather we had. Summer’s are SHORT up here in the north, so I will soak up every last ounce of summer weather I can get.

How was your Labour Day long weekend?
