And then she rested

Remember my “and then she ran” post? Well today I’m taking the opposite approach. Today, for the first time since January 8, I am resting. No running, no yoga, no strength training, no snowboarding.

Ahhhhhhh.

Though, I must say, the brand new running shoes I picked up last night before run clinic are really tempting me…

I went with the Asics GT-2160′s this time around. I have been a faithful wearer of the Asic Kayano’s since I started running a couple years ago. But the latest model of the Kayano’s were not doing it for me at all. I went through two pair in six months (how long one pair would usually last me) and the $200 price tag on them wasn’t fun either.

I picked up the GT-2160′s for about $40 less than the Kayano’s and I’m really hoping they last me longer. I’m dying to try them out but I will be a good girl and wait until tomorrow.

In other news, I made Angela’s Avocado Pasta last night and it was pretty good! I think I used too much pasta and too little avocado though because it was a little bland. (FYI: That’s Daiya cheese on the salad ;) )

Still going strong with the Vegan Challenge after three days. I have to say organic, non-dairy chocolate chips are my saving grace and I really miss cheese ;) Tomorrow I’m doing a restaurant review of the only raw/vegan restaurant (that I know of) in Kamloops!

Oh, and we finished season 5 of Dexter last night. I was kind of disappointed with how it turned out. I am, however, quite impressed that we watched all five seasons of Dexter in just over a month. When does season 6 start (there is going to be a season 6, right?)

I guess this kind of turned into a 3 Things Thursday post? Shoes, pasta, Dexter. Yes. This is what happens when I blog at 11:00 PM.

Anyhow, since this turned into an unintended 3 Things Thursday post – what are your 3 things today?

Latest Obsession

We’ve stayed up until midnight watching Dexter the last two nights in a row – we just finished season 4 last night. Holy Crap! Most intense season yet, by far! Right at the beginning of season 4 I predicted that the person who died was going to die but it still kind of shocked me and was super sad. I digress.

Due to staying up till midnight and getting up at 6, I’m currently working on 12 hours of sleep in two days. Might be a lot to some, but it is not much for me. So, for the last two days I have been detouring a few streets over on my way to work and picking up my latest obsession:

Tim Hortons large coffee with one cream. I have been getting one of these 3-4 times per week lately!

I seem to switch up where I get my coffee from. I used to be obsessed with Starbucks lattes but lately I am so over lattes and find them way to sweet for my liking. Then I was obsessed with a local coffee shop, Cowboy Coffee. Now, it’s Tim Hortons.

At $1.70 a pop, my new obsession isn’t that detrimental to my wallet, but that money still adds up. I think I need to invest in a reusable coffee mug so I can start bringing my French Press coffee from home again.

I am, by the way, doing much better with drinking less coffee. I’d say I’m drinking about 1-3 cups per day now and I try to go one day per week with no coffee at all (this always results in a screaming headache). I’m hoping to get to the point where I can drink coffee when I feel like it but on days I don’t I won’t be plagued with a headache!

Are you a daily coffee drinker? Do you make your coffee at home or buy it on your way to work?

Village on a Diet

Last night Eric and I streamed the first episode of Village on a Diet.

Screen shot 2011-01-04 at 9.38.51 PM.png

It’s a new Biggest Loser-ish CBC reality TV show about a small Canadian town trying to lose one ton (2,000 pounds) of weight.

It was filmed last summer in Taylor, B.C., which is approximately 15 minutes out of Fort St. John, B.C. and I spent three summers working at the Taylor Pool.

In other words, I KNOW a whole bunch of the people who are on the show!!!! It was SO WEIRD watching a national television show being filmed in a place where I grew up and spent every day for three summers working. I recognized SO many people from working at the pool because lots of community people would come in.

Two of the main people who are being profiled on the show are very close friends of my family and I’ve known them my whole life. Crazy, hey?!

It was also interesting, to watch “reality TV” from the perspective of knowing the true reality of a place.

For example, the dietician blamed the high obesity rates (apparently 60% of the community is obese – I did NOT know this) on limited access to groceries. What they failed to mention is that Fort St. John is a 15-20 minute drive away and the majority of the people who live in Taylor work there or go up there daily (where there is a Safeway, Save-on, Sobeys and Wholesale for groceries :P )

Ahhhh reality TV.

However, at the beginning they were interviewed and asked what was the biggest deterrent to their weight loss and the resounding answer was: WINTER.

I will give them that. Winters up there are BRUTAL. When I was in FSJ for 10 days last week it was at least -20 C ( – 4 F) every single day and it would get as cold as -40 C ( – 40 F) with the windchill.

If I still lived there I seriously doubt I would have ran a marathon. It really is harder to be active and motivated when the weather is that cold. The last thing you want to do when it’s THAT cold out is leave your house to go to the gym.

Anyways, the show is going to be airing every Monday for the next 10 weeks so I’m excited to follow along. It’s very cool to see somewhere so close to home on national television!

Have you ever known anyone who was on a reality TV show? And where you live does the weather make it easy or hard to be active?
