Who Inspires You?

If I hadn’t been inspired by other running bloggers I probably wouldn’t be running my second marathon in 10 sleeps.

If I hadn’t been inspired by other career-driven individuals who enjoy what they do every day I probably wouldn’t be at my current workplace.

If I hadn’t been inspired by quotes, movies, music, books, art and more I might not be the same person I am today.

If I hadn’t been inspired by a fellow classmate’s blog I probably wouldn’t be writing this blog post right now.

If I hadn’t been inspired by world travelers I probably wouldn’t have experienced my own world travels and constantly be thinking about and planning the next big trip.

Inspiration is a funny thing isn’t it? We feel powerful, happy, even on cloud 9 when we’re inspired by something and when we set goals for ourselves that are just out of our reach – at least that’s how I feel when a wave of inspiration hits.

Who Inspires You is a contest sponsored by Tri-Cyclen Lo to help inspire young women across the country. To enter the contest you need to upload a video of five minutes or less to YouTube telling the judges what you aspire to be and how you would use $10,000 to get there. Pretty awesome, right?

Last year’s winner, Daniela, used the money to pursue her dream of making music her career. I can’t wait to see what this years winner aspirations are!

What is your official job title and what exactly does your job entail? How did you get into your field of work?

My title is digital editor – so I handle all things online for our magazine (a business publication with a twist – it’s about creatives, it’s about innovation, it’s about entrepreneurship) and also have responsibility for a few print sections.

I did a communications degree majoring in journalism while working part time at one of the two big news organisations here, which really got me started in the industry.

Describe a typical day in your work life?
I usually start off by dealing to urgent emails, then get stuck into writing and posting. Stories range from tech, marketing, design, sustainability, startups, to general business. Prepping for the day’s newsletter (I either have one or two to send out, depending on the day) and sending it out is usually done by around lunchtime, when I take a break and then get back into it.

Meanwhile, I’ll also be moderating comments, checking traffic and analytics, taking care of social media (posting links, engaging with followers, resharing content, looking for story ideas), keeping an eye on other media, reaching out to potential guest posters, editing contributions, organising giveaways, liaising with sources and writers over upcoming stories for the next issue, formatting and publishing stories from the mag online, prepping for and conducting interviews and occasionally heading out to cover events (live tweeting conferences is always good fun).

What’s your least favourite thing about your job? What is your favourite thing about your job?

Least favourite thing has to be tech woes, be it slow internet (I always need to be connected, obviously, so I just don’t have time for slow speeds) or slow systems. I guess that’s endemic to many jobs though. More specific would be operating on a shoestring (there is only so much I can cover myself/source for free) or dealing with the occasional difficult PR person (I deal with some great PR/marketing types, but there are a few who just don’t have a clue).

I love the variety and I love how rewarding it is – I get to talk to all kinds of inspiring, successful and creative people; it never gets old. There’s always something to be done and the days fly by. And I largely work autonomously. I more or less get to set out my own days and definitely have a real sense of ownership.

What is something about your job that surprises people?

Probably just how many hats I wear. I am writer, sub, and editor all in one; community manager (manage multiple brand social profiles), write for both online and print, go to events,do our daily, weekly and fortnightly newsletters (for which I create/source all the content), general admin tasks, and deal with hundreds of emails a day.

If you could describe your career in one word, what would that word be?

Varied!

My Facebook Timeline

Yesterday I activated my new Facebook Timeline profile.

It’s only available for me to look at for the next week while I go through old posts and, uh, censor my 18 and 19 year old self a bit! Then I can publish it so everyone can see. Just an FYI, EVERYONE is getting timeline on December 26. So if you want to do some censoring now is the time to go in and do it.

I really enjoyed going in and looking through my old status updates, photos I’d been tagged in over the past five years and posts friends have left on my wall. Remember when Facebook was ALL about posting on one another’s walls? I’ve had Facebook since February 26, 2007 so a lot of my life is on there. It was fun to reminisce!

I thought I’d have to do a lot more censoring than I did. There were only a few posts that were inappropriate. Most of my posts throughout 2007 and 2008 consisted of me whining about studying, homework and how much I missed Eric!

And some things really DON’T change even after five years ;)

It was fun to find the statuses where I was starting to get into blogging and running!

After playing around with Timeline a little bit I decided I’m a big fan. It’s more for me than anything and it’s fun to have this digital scrapbook of my life over the last five years. I only really managed to go through 2007 and 2008 in detail last night and can’t wait to read through 2009-2011!

I’m a huge Facebook fan. I don’t like it as much as Twitter mostly because I like the conversational and instantaneous updating aspect of Twitter, I also have more of my current friends on Twitter where Facebook is a lot of people from my past. But I do really enjoy how easy Facebook makes it to stay in touch with people. I think the new Timeline feature they’ve rolled out is another way they are setting themselves apart from other social media platforms and I for one definitely won’t be deleting my Facebook account any time soon!

Anyways, that is my initial take on the new Timeline after spending an hour or so playing around with it yesterday! I can’t wait to check it out even more and look at my friends timelines (maybe it’s the stalker inside me that really likes Facebook?!?! hehe)
