What my workouts look like lately

I’ve done lots of posts on the blog over the years about my workouts because working out is a big part of my life and something I really love doing. Nothing feels better to me than a good sweat session.

Now, here I am with a 3.5 month old baby, definitely a very different phase of life than ever before. Luckily I am on maternity leave so my full-time job right now is taking care of baby Olivia. But let me tell you, this boss really keeps me on my toes. Just when I think I have my breaks (aka naps) figured out – she throws me for a loop and wakes up early or doesn’t go down for a nap when I think she will. So I have to be flexible about when and how I fit my workouts in these days and they are definitely cut short more often than they used to be!

Here is what my workouts look like now…

Lot’s of interrupted at-home Fitness Blender workouts…often finished with a 14 lb baby as my weight!

This is my main go-to workouts right now. I try to do Fitness Blender workouts at least twice, if not three times per week. It works best for me if I follow an actual fitness blender program vs just randomly doing workouts, I like to have a plan and I love the big check marks I get on their new website calendar! I did the FB Burn program in January and I’m working my way through the FB Sweat program right now. These programs are 5x per week but I usually only do 2-3x per week and then add the missed workouts on at the end to get an additional couple of weeks out of the programs.

Lots & lots & lots of walking.

With little baby Carlos in tow… Eric, Olivia, Chloe and I enjoyed our first family walk outside last weekend. It was soooo beautiful out. Then Olivia, Chloe and I got out for another walk yesterday. I also walk at the track with my mom 3ish times per week and meet a group of other moms and their babies for a walk 1x per week. Olivia loves the ergo 360 baby carrier and she feels so-so about her stroller. She just recently got big enough to face out in the ergo and she loves loves loves that because this baby really enjoys looking all around and taking everything in!

Some running mixed in with the walking… when I feel like it that is.

Usually 1-2 x per week when I go to the track with my mom she pushes the stroller and I do some running. I am yet to do more than 5 minutes of running straight. Usually I do 1/2 lap run, 1/2 lap walk and work up to a full lap of running and 1/2 lap of walking. I do have the BOB Revolution stroller so I definitely can run with Olivia in the stroller, but my mom likes pushing her around the track which is nice for me so I can focus on my run! I am looking forward to some outdoor runs once the weather gets nicer and all the snow melts.

A little bit of yoga.

I am probably averaging two yoga classes at the studio per month. I’d really like to try and bump that up to three now that Eric’s work schedule has changed and I have a bit more flexibility in my evening schedule. I am also trying to do 1 – 2 yoga practices per week at home even though practicing at home really isn’t my thing… Exciting news, just last week I put my deposit down for Yoga Teacher Training! That will be starting in August 2018 and I cannot wait. I definitely need to really get my strong yoga practice back though. If you have any favourite at-home yoga practices please send them my way.

And just started back at spin once a week!

I’m going to regularly go to Tuesday evening spin at the gym. I bought a punch card the other week and have gone twice now. Holy moly it’s a workout. I’m a sweaty mess by the end but it feels soooo good to do some intense cardio! I also am doing a spin instructor training at the gym coming up in April (the first two full days I will be away from Olivia – cue sobbing emoticon face!!) and I’m looking forward to that as I really want to start teaching more and more fitness classes in the future.

So that’s what my workouts are looking like these days! It’s not as easy to workout with a baby as it was without one, but I just need to make sure I go into each day knowing what my workout is going to be that day and prioritize it in my schedule. Sometimes that means only doing half a workout, or finishing my workout while also dancing, singing and making faces to keep Olivia entertained, and sometimes it means skipping it all together because she’s not napping well that day. If there is one thing I’ve learned since becoming a parent it’s that being flexible and adaptable is key!

What do your workouts look like these days?

Weekend Recap!

Last weekend’s recap is coming at you a bit late because I was way too exhausted last night to write anything up!! I had a pretty great weekend, which included lots of socializing and being out and about and not quite as much time being productive at home, but that’s ok.

Right after work on Friday Eric and I hit up the gym together. He did his normal workout and I took a Group RX (similar to body pump) class. It was a great class and felt good to get in a full body strength workout. After the gym we went for a nice dinner with my dad as he was in town visiting us all last week. I ended up ordering the trout which is not something I would normally order but it ended up being sooo yummy!

Once we got home from dinner we rented The Imitation Game. It was SO good. I was super tired and having trouble keeping my eyes open by the end but I manged to stay up for it and I’m so glad I did. I’ve been wanting to see it for awhile now and it totally met my expectations. Such a great movie!

Saturday morning I met up with some of my running friends for a 1.5 hour trail run. It was actually super cold for most of this run and SNOWING for a bit at the very beginning. Quite crazy for April 25… It was a good run though and nice to catch up with some running friends I hadn’t seen in awhile.

You can see the snow falling in this photo my friend took!

After the run I had a quick shower and my mom picked me up and we met my Grandma to go to the first Farmer’s Market of the year. We brought her 6-month old boston terrier/french bulldog, Lucy, along! It was super fun to check out the Farmer’s Market again, I’m so happy it’s back I LOVE going down on Saturday mornings. There are not a lot of vegetables or fruits out yet but I got some cheese, lettuce, honey and salmon.

Once the market was done we all went for lunch at one of my favourite local restaurants, Hello Toast. Because we had Lucy we had to sit on the patio which was actually really nice. It was super sunny and nice out by that point. Crazy that I had a snowy trail run and lunch on a patio in the sunshine all in one day.

Saturday evening was somewhat productive as I did my meal prep for the week. I also set up my laptop in the kitchen and started catching up on Suits since I finally finished Friday Night Light’s. Not going to lie, I really really miss FNL and all the characters in that show!

I also spent a fair amount of time prepping for the Spin & Core class I had agreed to sub on Sunday morning and downloading some new tunes.

Sunday started out bright and early as I had to be at the YMCA about 20 minutes from my house to sub a Spin & Core class. I have finished two of my three courses in order to become a group fitness instructor and I’m currently working through my final course and have some workshops to go to in May. However, I’ve already started teaching! I have my own TRX class on Tuesday nights and I’ve also started subbing here and there. I’m not going to lie, spin felt WAY out of my comfort zone but I had done a spin workshop a few weeks ago so when I saw they were looking for a sub I decided to sign up to do it.

Super happy face post subbing spin & core!

It was AWESOME. I had so so much fun, you guys. I left the gym feeling on cloud 9 and it was just a great reminder that pursuing this opportunity was such a good fit for me. I already love teaching group fitness classes so much and it’s only been a couple of weeks! After the class I picked up my grandma to take her to Costco and actually got a really cute dress and pair of red pants myself, and then we went for lunch again.

Sunday afternoon Eric and I went to Home Depot to scope out the prices for a few housing projects we’re going to take on this spring. Why must house updates be sooo expensive??? And then Sunday evening we had two baseball games. Eric only stayed for one as he wasn’t needed for the second game but they needed more girls so I stayed for both games. I also LOVE playing baseball on Sunday evenings. I played team sports my whole life and it’s been really fun to get back to it. My dad came out to watch our first game too which was great.

I ended the weekend on the couch with a mini DQ blizzard watching Game of Thrones feeling exhausted but content.

How was your weekend?

The husbands secret

The high of my week was starting my 7th book of January the other night. All the downtime I’ve been talking about has meant lots of time for hanging out on the couch and reading. I have read four books and listened to two audiobooks so far this month and it’s been great! So far I’m really loving ‘The Husband’s Secret’ and I find it hard to put down.

The low of my week was no real low this week. It was a pretty mediocre week around these parts!

Something on the internet I loved was well I definitely didn’t “love” these articles but I think they are two very important article that all Canadians should read: Welcome to Winnipeg: Where Canada’s racism problem is at it’s worst and Canada’s race problem? It’s even worse than America’s.

These articles are hard to stomach as a Canadian but I think if we’re aware of these issues we are in a better position to take steps towards ending it. They are both very eye-opening reads that gave me goosebumps.

For my workouts, I completed On Monday I did two 21-day fix workouts, one in the morning and one in the evening. Tuesday I did a 4.25 mile run before work. Wednesday I did a Group RX class at lunch and my Pilates Fix video in the evening. Yesterday I did a Core Conditioning class at lunch. Today I’m doing my lower fix video and a short run this morning and tonight I’m going to another live music flow yoga class!

Fitness training photo

The best money I spent was purchasing my first textbook to start training to be a group fitness instructor at the YMCA! so I haven’t mentioned this on the blog yet but I’ve decided to do my training through the YMCA to teach TRX. The TRX class I attended once a week (and loved!) got canceled because of the instructors schedule and when I expressed my disappointment she suggest I get trained to teach it. So I thought about it over the Christmas holidays and decided that this is something that’s always been at the back of my mind and if not now, when? So over the next couple of months I will be working through two courses and doing some shadowing and mentoring under other instructors at the Y. I’m pretty excited about it 🙂

My plans this weekend include yoga, brunch with my friend Katie, grocery shopping, meal prep, reading, watching Suits, working on my Basic Fitness Theory course, running 18km and more yoga 🙂

What workouts did you complete this week?
