4 weeks of Olivia!

Read my 2 weeks of Olivia update here.

On Christmas Eve, Olivia Mabelynn turned 1 month old. I cannot believe that this little girl has been in our lives for 1 month already. It feels like she has been here forever and no time at all. The days are long but the years are short, that feels especially true as of late.

Around 3 weeks old Olivia went through her first development leap. If you are a new parent I highly recommend the Wonder Weeks app. I have also ordered the book to read, but right now have been relying on the app for knowledge. Normally the first leap doesn’t happen until 5 weeks, however since leaps are based on due dates not birth dates and Olivia was 11 days late, she went through the leap early – when she was about 3 weeks old.

We went through some major fussy-ness in the evenings at that time and all of a sudden Olivia was so much more awake and alert! The first two weeks of her life all she really did is sleep and eat. She could easily be laid down in her baby nest to sleep and slept through almost anything. In the last 2 weeks putting her to sleep has been harder and harder. As I’m typing this we have all the lights dimmed and she is swinging in the swing while we whisper to each other. You gotta do what you gotta do!

An adorable outfit and a fussy baby! My grandma – Olivia’s great grandma – made her this adorable little outfit.

Eric went back to work on December 12, when Olivia was 2 weeks and 3 days old, and while I sobbed like a baby the night before and the morning of, I have to say Olivia and I have been making out pretty well. Our days are busy and I try to plan at least one outing each day. Of course we had all the busyness leading up to Christmas, and with all of the family we have around we always have at least one visitor every day.

One of my favourites from our newborn photo shoot.

Olivia and I also went on two lunch outings with former coworkers of mine and she was such a good girl on both occasions. I also breastfed in public for the first time at one of those lunch outings and it went well.

All dressed up in one of her nicest sleepers for a lunch outing!

We also go to the walking track almost every day with my mom and push Olivia around in the stroller. I got a used BOB Revolution stroller off a Facebook Buy & Sell page and then we were gifted the car seat adapter from our registry so her infant car seat snaps right into the stroller. It’s super handy and I LOVE the stroller.

We are SO lucky that Olivia is such a good sleeper. She has slept for 3-4 hour stretches right from the beginning and in the last 2 weeks those have increased to 5 hour stretches with the occasional 6 hour stretch of sleep thrown in there.

I’ve noticed in the last week or so that her wake-ups at night seem to last much longer. Before she’d eat, get a diaper change and be back to sleep in 30 – 45 minutes. Even though she only wakes up once, now we are up for 2 hours by the time she eats, gets a couple diaper changes, and goes back to sleep. The other night she was up from 4 – 6 and the night of Christmas she was up 3:30 – 5:30. I am glad she only wakes up once per night since the wake ups last so long!

She has also become so so alert and bright eyed since her first development leap. It’s so fun to watch her looking around with her big beautiful eyes and she has also started smiling.

We went for our first outdoor walk using the Boba Wrap when it was warmer out a week or so ago. There are three carriers I’m using right now regularly; the ring sling, the boba wrap and the Ergo 360. I will have to do a separate post sharing the pro’s and con’s of each one once I’ve used them all more.

Another lunch date and another adorable outfit!

Olivia’s preferred place to sleep is ON someone. She gets into the deepest sleep on mommy or daddy or grammy’s chests. And she is just so sweet, these are the moments I know I will yearn for one day.

Olivia also met Santa for the first time when she was 2 weeks old! I can’t wait to compare this photo to the one next year, I have a feeling it will be very different 🙂

And on the day she turned 4 weeks old, Olivia took her first bottle! We have been lucky enough to be able to exclusively breastfeed and I have been pumping about once per day over the last 4 weeks, so have stockpiled a decent amount of milk in the freezer. We wanted to try giving Olivia a bottle so Eric could take care of a couple of middle of the night feedings during his time off over the holidays, and also so we can hopefully have a date night. She sucked the bottle back like a champ, and Eric and I are looking forward to going on our first date night since she was born later this week!

I’ll leave you with this hilarious outtake from our 1 month photoshoot. This little girl seriously lights up our lives! Despite her being such a good sleeper, I’m still exhausted as I’m not used to only getting about 4-5 hours of sleep in a row before being woken up and also sleep with a newborn next to my bed isn’t exactly great (though it is better than it was when I was 40-41 weeks pregnant!) but it’s completely worth it. She is such a sweet little baby and we love her so much.

I am looking forward to soaking up lots of time with my little family over the next few days as Eric is off work until January 2. Then he goes back on night shift, boo!

If you celebrate, I hope you had a wonderful Christmas!

  1. I can’t believe she is already a month old! Time is flying! She is such a cutie and it looks like she has a great wardrobe of outfits! She looks so long in that one photo with her moccasins on! I hope the time she is awake for feedings starts to decrease as that is a long time to be awake. Thank goodness she only gets up once at night. I wonder if babies who get up more often are less alert? Otherwise it seems like you’d never sleep if the baby is up every 2 hours!

I hope you guys have lots of quiet days together before Eric goes back on night shifts. That is going to be tough to adjust to for all of you!

What a sweet baby!!! I love her outfits!!

  3. I am so glad you have Wonder Weeks! It seriously got me through the first year and change. And YAY that she took the bottle so well! It is really helpful when you can take a breather from feeding and pass it off. Plus, what a great way for the two of them to really bond.

Ohhhh, that picture of her all snuggled on your lap makes me have all the heart-melts. What a sweet time this is, even if you’re sleep-deprived! I cannot believe she’s already a month old – where does the time go?!

She is just so precious!!! Love that you all have this time together for the holidays! It’s amazing to me the development that happens during this stage! I will have a baby in the nursery and one week they are not sitting up and the next week they are. Same for pulling up on their own. It’s incredible to watch the changes!

  7. I love these posts!!!!

She is absolutely adorable, and that is so awesome that you are getting on an outing once per day. Also, that is super smart to pump once daily, while exclusively beast feeding; you are kicking butt at this parenting thing 🙂

The picture from the photo shoot of her with Eric is precious.

I forgot to ask about your recovery, if you are doing well! I guess it can take a few weeks to feel physically better!

  9. OMG she’s so adorable. We went out to eat for the first time when Ella was 5 weeks old, that claustrophobic feeling of just being you and the baby in the house is so difficult to break out of. Enjoy date night! Hope you’re doing well
