Weekend Recap: Camping at Oles Lake

This weekend the weather was absolutely glorious – it was the perfect first hot summer weekend. I was so happy that Eric was off work because we headed out for 3 nights of camping at a small lake about an hour away from town.

It was only the second time taking out our 12 foot trailer we bought last summer, and it was so great. We tent camped for years, but not sleeping on the ground is the best thing ever. Our trailer bed is also very comfy.

Our set up.

We got out there on Thursday night and my brother, dad and my brother’s friend joined us for dinner and s’mores.

On Friday Eric and I were on our own for the day. That was the only day with not great weather – it rained for a bit in the afternoon and then got super super windy in the early evening. We hunkered down under our gazebo and played crib when it was pouring rain in the afternoon. When the wind / rain let up I took Chloe for a hike on the trail around the lake, which was basically a run around the lake because there were sooo many mosquitoes you couldn’t stop moving or you’d get swarmed.

Friday night Eric’s parents joined us and they all spent the evening fishing. We were also treated to the most amazing sunset!

Saturday was hot, hot, hot! Originally we were only going to camp for 2 nights and head back into town on Saturday, but then the weather was the most amazing yet and Eric’s sister and her family also came out to camp so we spent an extra night. I also got super sunburnt on Saturday even though I layered on the SPF 30 like crazy. Guess I will have to get some stronger sunscreen.

How I started off my Saturday morning. Coffee and reading with a lake view 🙂 The only thing missing was bailey’s for my coffee 😉 Side note: that book is sooo good!

My in-laws heading out in their canoe for some fishing!

I spent a lot of time kayaking – one of my favourite summer activities. And yes, that is a 20 week baby bump you see!! First trimester recap coming this week, promise!

And that was our weekend. We got back into town at around 1pm on Sunday and the rest of Sunday was spent doing laundry, watering plants and my garden, vacuuming and also doing some more organizing / unpacking / decluttering. If you can believe it, we still have not fully unpacked / cleaned out our garage since getting possession of our house almost 4 months ago. I ended up selling a bunch of stuff online that we forgot we even had. Clearly if we haven’t used it in 4 months / forgot we had it – we don’t need it!

On the flip side, we actually have some boxes / packages we hadn’t unpacked since moving north from Kamloops in May 2016 and I also discovered two mirrors I completely forgot we had! I had been shopping casually for a mirror for our entry way and now I’m so glad I never bought one because one of these mirrors is going to be perfect.

Our first camping weekend was great! Because of Eric’s work schedule, he only has three (3!!) more weekends off between right now and the end of August. We are definitely planning on camping at least 1 or 2 of them as it’s so nice to get away every once in a while and especially nice to wake up next to the lake.

How was your weekend? Do you go camping much in the summer?

  1. Your pictures are beautiful, especially the sunset ones! I am glad you guys had a fun weekend getaway. Bummer about getting sunburned, though – ouch!!

I grew up camping in a camping trailer. We went to different lakes for awhile before getting a spot on a campground on the lake where my parents have their lake home now. I’ve never actually tent camped but we will do that for the first time in August for Phil’s birthday weekend. I can’t wait as we are going to a place with awesome hiking!

My weekend was good. I thought it was going to be low key and quiet but I was actually

  2. * whoops, push send accidentally! I was actually quite busy between cleaning and getting stuff done around the house. I also met a friend’s new, adorable 4 week old baby, sold 2 of the library card catalog drawers that I had bought for the wedding, caught up with 2 friends on the phone/video chat and caught up my mom and SIL. It felt good to get so much done but I wish I had more down time to read and relax! Hopefully I’ll have a quiet weekend in July and next weekend won’t be quiet with our (fun) trip to the lake!

What a great weekend! I am not a camper but seeing and hearing of other people’s trips make me wish I was! We might try one night with the girls in a tent this summer.
    PS Love your little bump!

Absolutely gorgeous pictures! Glad you guys had such a good weekend! I admit I’m really not a camper but I kind of agree with others that your pictures make me want to be!

Your weekend looks like so much fun! I would love to buy a trailer one day – I grew up camping in one every summer and it was so much fun. We have a tent, but it’s just not the same – especially when it rains. I have so many great memories of playing cards in our trailer during rainy camping days when I was a kid. Good times. 🙂

  7. What a great trip! I love camping 🙂 We’re headed to Clear Lake in Manitoba (Riding Mountain National Park) next week, and I’m super pumped!!!!

  8. […] I’ve always felt this immense pressure to ‘make the most’ out of summer weekends. That internal pressure has only intensified since A) we moved north and summer is literally 3 months long – maybe 4 months if we’re lucky and B) Eric only gets every 3rd weekend off work because of his schedule of working 14 days and then having 7 days off. His last weekend off was the epitome of summer as we spent it camping on the lake. […]
