Weekend + Hypothermic Half-Marathon Recap

Happy Monday friends! I felt like I had a really busy weekend and didn’t get to as much of the productive stuff I like to do on the weekends (like meal prep) but it was a great weekend nonetheless. This recap is a combination weekend recap and race recap as I ran my first race of 2015 on Sunday – the Hypothermic Half-Marathon put on by the Running Room.

Let’s start with the weekend recap…

Friday Night

My Friday night was similar to last week. I cleaned the house top to bottom, that usually only takes about 1.5 hours as we don’t have a very big house and we keep it pretty clean anyways. Then I did the 21 Day Fix Dirty 30 workout which is an awesome full body workout that left me super sweaty. By that time Eric had gotten home from the gym so we went and got sushi and wine and I finished off my night catching up on Scandal. Might seem like a boring Friday night to some people but I would never want a wilder night than this, it was perfect.

Saturday

First thing on Saturday I went to my favourite hot flow yoga class and it was awesome. I put my mat over by the window so I could be in the sunshine and it made me extra sweaty but it was such a good class. I love the time (a 9am 75-minute class) and the teacher on Saturday mornings so I try to make it as often as possible.

After yoga I came home and showered and Eric and I went and grabbed Starbucks and headed out for a hike in the sunshine. We also got Chloe a puppucino at Starbucks. Yup, we’re those people. Haaaa!

Disclaimer: if you live anywhere other than the west coast maybe skip over this next part! I’m really not trying to brag it’s just the weather we’re having this winter is so so incredible that we can’t not take advantage of it…

It was only about 8 C / 46 F when we went for our hike but with the sun shining on us it felt much much warmer. How stunning is this view? One of my favourite views on one of my favourite local trails!

Yup, this is me hiking in a tank top. In February. I know!

After our hike I rushed home for a quick video chat with Lisa, which was great! We always chat for a good hour and we could always talk for longer if we didn’t have places to go and things to do.

Then my mom picked me up and I went to the movie with her and my friend Carmine. We saw Wild, which JUST came to our city last week – I’ve been waiting for it forever! I thought the movie was really well done and enjoyed it. I loved Wild but I am also a huge, huge Cheryl Strayed fan in general so it was great to see the movie. Saturday evening I did some studying for my next fitness exam today and then got to bed nice and early before my race on Sunday.

Sunday – Hypo Half Recap!

I was up bright and early to get ready for the Hypo Half. I signed up for this race back in November in hopes that it would motivate me to train through the winter but that actually kind of backfired and I started resenting running a bit. I did three long runs for this – a 16km (10 mile), 18km (11.2 miles) and 20km (12.5 miles) all two weeks apart. In the in-between weeks I did 10-12km runs. Because I was quite undertrained for this I decided to run it with my friend Sam who is 21 weeks pregnant so I knew she’d be taking it easy. Here she thought I was doing her a favour but actually she was doing me one as I didn’t want to put any pressure on myself 🙂

Yup this bear ran the half-marathon and totally beat us! Haha

Honestly, the miles flew by. We did 10 and 1’s, kept a fairly easy pace and chatted the whole way. My legs started to feel stiff and tired and I started to be over it by about 17km, but until then I felt great and was enjoying running on a beautiful day!

IMG 5752

This is a nice flat route, would be a good one to attempt a PR on if I was better trained!

IMG 5751

Right after we crossed the finish line! You might recognize Sam from the last half-marathon we ran together on the trail.

According to my garmin we finished the race in 2:21. My slowest half-marathon yet, and I could not care any less. It was a beautiful day with a good friend and I had a lot of fun. This was also my 13th half-marathon!

Oh and I wore my Lima Capri’s from Fabletics for this race and they were awesome. I find them a little bit too tight in the waist for yoga but they were great for running.

After the run I joined in on Becky’s virtual baby shower google hangout with a whole bunch of lovely ladies. It was super fun to chat with all of them and then because I was late joining the chat I hung around till the end and got some one-on-one chatting time with Becky, which was great!

After that my mom picked me up and we took the dogs to the beach just as the sun was setting!

Chloe and Lucy (my mom’s french bulldog/boston terrier puppy) are best buds!

After the beach I planted myself on the couch with my laptop, a glass of wine and had the Oscars on in the background. I was exhausted from such a busy weekend!

Well I did manage to get the house cleaning and the laundry done this weekend I failed to do all my meal prep (I did get some done). But I am planning on grocery shopping after work today and doing more tonight. This was my first weekend in several weeks where I didn’t do any meal prep and it feels a bit weird. But it was a full, awesome weekend enjoying time outside, being active and with family and friends so I definitely cannot complain.

How was your weekend? What does your ideal Friday night look like?

  1. Sounds like you had a fun, full weekend! I love those purple pants that you wore on your hike! And the blue ones you wore for the half! That is crazy that you have done that many halfs! I think I have only done maybe 4-5? I should sit down and count. I don’t do very many races, though, so I am not surprised that my total is low.

My weekend was great. It ended up being a little busier than I thought it would be – especially Saturday as I kind of felt like I went from one thing to the next but Sunday was very low key and I got a lot done around the house so that is good. My ideal Friday night includes making dinner with Phil and then playing a game or watching a movie or something on Netflix. I am usually shot by Friday night so I don’t want to be out and about usually!

It looks like you had a great weekend! I love that you can hike in a tank top in Feb..we are also having great weather and it has been really clear, so you can see for miles, which sometimes is not the case, as it is often foggy here. I also love your Friday night, which is pretty much my ideal Friday night. I love staying in and being cozy (and drinking wine)!

I have been battling a bad cold and so took the entire last week off from exercise, but this weekend it was just TOO nice and I could not stay inside. I took a couple of very slow trail runs and was hacking the whole time, but it was totally worth it to get outside and enjoy the sunshine and fresh air!

I’m amazed at how much you fit into a weekend – no wonder you didn’t get any meal prep done! I’m surprised you went and did anything after the video chat yesterday! Whew!

My weekend was fabulous but full of NOTHING. We got snow and ice on Saturday so I literally stayed in bed all day (only coming downstairs to eat), and watched episodes of Friends on Netflix. Sunday wasn’t too different, but I watched Friends from the couch and did some laundry and then had the most fun time on the virtual shower video chat! So glad you could be there!

Hope you’re not too wiped from your weekend today!

I have been craving sushi and went to grab some for lunch Sat morning and they had not made any yet 🙁 Boo!
Awesome race! I love my Fabletics capris for running too, which surprised me since usually I do not like to run in capris.
I always love your hike photos! Makes me a tad jealous 😉

Sounds like you had a great weekend! I love Friday nights like that. Even with not working anymore, I still prefer to stay in and just relax at home. But I’m also a bit of a homebody 🙂 I want to see Wild…better or worse than the book? And congratulations on another half marathon! Looks like a beautiful day for it 🙂

That is my ideal Friday night, too! I stayed in and caught up on my DVR, which was really nice. Low-key Friday nights are my favorite.

My weekend was AWESOME: my sister-in-law had her baby so we were all at the hospital for most of the weekend, helping her out when needed and snuggling with the baby! He is perfect and adorable and I can’t wait to see him again!

Love the Free Hugs Bear. What a fun thing to see at the run.

Our Friday nights aren’t particularly wild around here, usually the DVR, maybe dinner out, and some R&R. The weeks have been kicking our collective butts lately so a smooth transition into the weekend is very nice 🙂

  8. Congrats on such a fun race & great weekend! Looks like Eric has lost some weight, and his mustache is coming in nicely. ha!

  9. Kelly says:

It was lovely to see your face and hear your voice on Sunday 🙂 It makes me happy to hear your Canadian accent.

I admit I did not read this post after you said to skip… I normally am happy for others having nice weather but I just can’t bring myself to be happy for you at the moment because our winter has been just so so bad. Hopefully I will be over this soon haha. I did look at all the pictures though. Congrats on another half marathon complete!

I’m jealous of your warm weather … It’s close to -20 with snow in Edmonton yet again today – I’m running out of ideas to keep the kids entertained! It sounds like a great weekend, though. I can’t wait for spring to get here!

My ideal Friday night is spent at the barn 😀 I’ve taken a few weeks off lessons because my coach doesn’t have a horse for me to ride at the moment (it’s been so icy here, all the horses are sore!) so lately my “ideal Friday night” involves watching whatever show we’re currently binge watching with my husband and staying up late with a book.

  11. Emilie says:

I say this all the time but I really need to check out Fabletics because I love everything you wear from there! Once I get my tax return and pay off my cruise in April I’ll be emailing you for your referral link. So happy to hear how great your half marathon went! 13 x 13.1 is a pretty darn awesome achievement if you ask me. I’m so jealous of your weather, too! I have hardly run outside this winter because it’s been so brutal. Lately our Friday nights have been something like this: gym, dinner, grocery shop. I love low-key Friday nights.
