What I’m doing instead of blogging…

Blogging feels like the hardest thing in the world these days and when I do sit down to blog I can’t seem to do anything other than coffee dates, five on friday’s, TGIF posts, or meme’s of some sort. I just don’t have any ideas for full fledged blog posts lately and when I do have good ideas I’m not putting fingers to keyboard and actually writing them out.

Anyways, here’s some stuff I’m doing instead of blogging these days…

Working. Lots and lots of work at all different hours and whenever I’m at work lately I feel like I’m going at a very intense pace trying to get everything done. We have a massive fundraising event in two weeks and it’s lots of logistical work. Presentation season is also in full swing so I’m doing a lot of presentations and leading tours. I love it but it definitely takes up a lot of my energy.

Exercising – but only in the morning or at lunch. Right now I cannot get myself to workout after work so I am making myself do morning workouts (usually only 3x a week) and lunch workouts twice a week. I have become very protective of my evenings and try to keep them very open and not plan things, even exercise. Right now I run two mornings a week, go to the gym twice at lunch and also go to the gym one morning per week for TRX.

Reading. I flew through Eleanor & Park in two days and I’m currently reading The Lost Girls. It’s a true crime novel and I’ve never read true crime before but so far I really like it. I also have A Long Way Gone and Burial Rites sitting on my bedside table.

Listening to Podcasts. I’ve graduated from my favourite (Jillian Michaels) to a few other podcasts lately. I like Freakanomics, catching up on CBC’s The Current and last night after hearing lots of hype about it I started listening to Serial. I’m already obsessed!

Visiting my grandparents. My grandma is down for a few months and I’m trying to spend as much of my spare time with her and my grandpa as possible since most of the year we live 1,000km apart! Which leads into the next bulletpoint…

Thrifting! My grandma loves thrift stores so I’ve been hitting them up with her lately and finding some great stuff. Like the dresser I shared in this post, some really cute clothes including the CUTEST jacket for $7 and recently two really awesome end tables I desperately want for our living room!

Walking Chloe. I’ve gotten into a really good routine of walking Chloe every day after work – usually it’s just a 1 – 2 mile walk but it gets us both out of the house for 15 – 30 minutes. I especially look forward to this time now that I have the above mentioned podcasts to listen to.

Puttering. It’s that time of year where I like to putter around the house. Clean this, tidy that, organize this, put that away. You know.

Selling stuff online. We recently got a new washer and dryer and sold our old one online. We also got a new dresser and gave our old one for free online. Most recently we are trying to sell our couch as my mom is giving us her old couch. It’s bittersweet because I LOVE our big, comfy sectional but it’s also just way too big and makes it difficult to rearrange our space. Plus if I want those amazing end tables I mentioned earlier I must make room for them 🙂 Anyways, selling stuff online is actually quite a bit of work from posting the ad, to going back and forth with someone to coordinate the pick-up or delivery to the actual execution of the pick-up and/or delivery!

Reading blogs. I’m still reading and commenting lots!

So there are just a few of things I’m doing instead of blogging. Clearly I am keeping pretty busy but I do hope I get some blog mojo back and write some actual posts that aren’t just random blurbs and bullet points.

What are you doing instead of blogging these days?

  1. This is definitely a busy season of your life so I can understand why you aren’t blogging as much as you did in the past. I haven’t really written any ‘meaty’ posts recently either as it’s been tougher to come up with topics that I want to write about and feel comfortable putting out there. Some seasons of our life just lend themselves better to blogging than others I guess!

Besides blogging, I’ve been enjoying a much less planned out month, cooking, reading lots, knitting, watching Parenthood, soaking up time with Phil, and dreaming about our Jamaica trip!

Ooh, so glad you are into Serial now! I am so obsessed. It’s unlike any podcast I’ve ever listened to. If you ever need someone to talk to about it, I’m all ears! 🙂

Hm, what else is going on for me? Reading, work, friends, watching a bunch of TV shows, planning my trip to Savannah, holiday prep. 🙂 I dropped down to 2 blog posts a week because 3 was just getting to be too much. I try to plan on one actual blog post and one TGIF or Five for Friday. My inspiration has been lacking for the past few weeks, so I haven’t felt myself wanting to blog as much as I have in the past. And I’m trying to focus more on my actual, REAL LIFE life than my online life… which means blogging falls to the back burner most days. It happens!

  3. Vanessa says:

I keep seeing Serial mentioned all over the place. I’m going to have to check it out!

I’ve been keeping busy with school and a new job, as well as lots of cooking and baking. We’re sinking into winter here in Winnipeg and the chilly weather has triggered some serious soup cravings!

  4. Carissa says:

Sometimes blog inspiration is hard to come by! Especially when you’re busy with so many other things. But sometimes when you are too busy to blog, that just means you are really truly living life fully, in the moment, without needing to capture it or wax poetic about it later. It’s a hard balance! Anyway, the thrifting sounds fun! And I’ve been getting into a routine of walking the dogs every morning. I’m so not a morning person, but once I drag my butt out there I always feel better afterwards. Fresh air and sunshine can work wonders 🙂

Selling stuff online is so much work! I’m going through that now. It’s good but man, so much haggling =)

You’ve got a lot going on and for you; I may not have as much going on but I am just not that motivated on the blog front lately. I think I may attempt week in the life next week but it may come out really, really boring =)

  6. Kara says:

I hear yah on being inspired to write non-listy or meme posts, sometimes it’s just hard to make an idea into a worthwhile post! I have tons of ideas, but when I go to write it turns out to be one, tiny paragraph. I struggle enough with my bi-weekly column enough 😛 I wish I had an excuse but I don’t!

I love/hate buying & selling stuff online. Love it because it’s free to list stuff, but hate it because going back and forth with someone via email can take forever, especially if they’re not overly tech-savvy and take forever to respond. I ain’t got time for that! lol

  7. Emilie says:

I think inspiration definitely ebbs and flows over time. It’s tough to squeeze everything in when life gets busy. I like what Stephany said about living in real life, too! This blogging hobby always comes after other things because it’s just that – a hobby. I took some time off recently when life got busy and I’m glad I didn’t pressure myself to fit it all in! I am glad you love your work… Makes it so much easier to handle busy seasons!

  8. Caroline says:

I feel you! I’ve been shooting, editing, hanging out with friends, shooting & editing some more. Blogging is just not the priority right now sadly!

  9. LG says:

I LOVE PUTTERING! Work has been too busy for me lately, so the nights when I can spend 45 minutes listening to podcasts and cleaning/tidying, I just love it. I think it’s my version of knitting or something and it lets my brain wind down a bit.

  10. Kelly says:

YES. So glad you are listening to Serial! Clearly I am also obsessed. What are your thoughts on it?
Who is the author of Lost girls? Sounds like something I would like!

  11. Travel Spot says:

Wow, besides blogging you are doing a ton of stuff! I think when you are not blogging, it just means you are living! Not that you can’t do both, but sometimes one takes priority!

Besides blogging, I am doing pretty much everything… Or should I say that I am doing pretty much everything besides blogging these days! Mostly running and working and eating, but a lot of other stuff too!

I like Serial and Freakanomics, also of course This American Life, The Moth, Planet Money, UltraRunner Podcast and Trail Runner Nation.

  12. Kelley says:

I have kind of the opposite problem…I have this new blog, and tonsss of things I want to write about, literally a book full of things, but yet just ZERO.FREE.TIME. Between work, crossfit, running, and studying, that leaves zero hours free time. How do you find time Amber…give a girl some tips. #newblogger #needtoprioritize

  13. I find that I am not as creative with blogging when I am busy with school … I’m taking a class right now, and that has consumed more of my time than I’d like.

  14. Holly says:

I’ve been working instead of blogging! I have tons of ideas to write about but very little time. I have a hard time writing when the kids are around and I usually work when they’re in bed, so yeah. Blogging hasn’t been a high priority of late. I’ve been in the puttering mindset lately too. I think I do more purging in the fall than the spring!

  15. I have been bad about blogging lately. I’ve been only really having time on one weekend day to read blogs/write posts. I’ve been attempting to stay up to date with my fb and fb groups. Along with working, 3 year old and ya know the rest of my crazy life!

  16. Shoshanah says:

I feel the same way about blogging lately. I just can’t seem to come up with great topics to post on. I still am posting, but it’s really just with the same memes over and over. Part of me think that it might get better after the baby arrives since I’ll have something new to write about. But then again I’m not sure how much time I’ll actually have! So we’ll have to see how it all goes…

  17. Becky says:

At least you have a list of things you’re doing instead of blogging! I’m like “um…sitting on the couch?” Although I guess I am growing a human which is kind of hard work. 🙂

  18. suki says:

Serial is def at the top of my list. Also trying to read more, go camping, get outdoors more… Doing so much that I don’t have time to document it all. :p

  19. […] than another boring weekend recap let’s catch up “ing” style. Inspired by this post from a few months ago here is what I’ve been doing instead of blogging […]
