Review of 25!

Today I turn 26.

Life is so good right now. However, there are still some days when I catch myself thinking about how much I want x, y or z or how nice _____ would be. But you know what, I am exactly where I wanted to be 6 months ago. I have been making a very conscious effort to feel grateful every single day. And really, it’s not that hard, I have a lot to be grateful for.

As has been the tradition on my blog, it’s time for my yearly review! I don’t really do yearly reviews on New Year’s anymore and instead do them on my birthday every year. Here are my reviews of 21, 22, 23 and 24. To be perfectly honest, I can’t look back on the past year and say it was amazing. It had some really great moments, it also had some really crappy moments. But that’s life.

So, when I was 25 I…

I ran the Chicago Marathon and had an amazing three days visiting Chicago!

I went to Vancouver for work and had an amazing run along the Vancouver seawall as the sun was setting. Still goes down as one of the most amazing runs I’ve ever been on!

I signed up for one of Bobbi from NHerShoes shreds and it was the push I needed to get back into strength training. My body changed so much in 8 weeks. 11 months later and strength training has finally become a major part of my workout routine!

I did the #mileaday challenge in December and ran a minimum of 1-mile every day that month – no matter how cold, snowy or crappy it was out (I did do two of the runs on the treadmill). I loved this challenge and will definitely do it again this year.

1 mile a day

Eric and I went on a whirlwind getaway trip to Vancouver during the February long weekend.

My dad got in a devastating head-on collision that landed him in the hospital for almost 6 weeks. He is still recovering from that accident almost eight months to the day later. Let me tell you, nothing makes you grow up faster than when dealing with a parent’s health issues. It was an extremely hard 6 weeks on our entire family while he was in the hospital. I am lucky to have such an incredible support system.

I ran my first race of the year at the end of March – a muddy, mucky, wet 21km trail race.

I spent 17 hours in San Francisco while on route to Louisville, Kentucky for a work trip. I fell in love with the city and cannot wait to go back for three full days in just a couple of short weeks!

I spent a week in Kentucky for work, which was super fun! I met some awesome people and got to visit Churchill Downs, which was pretty cool.

I celebrated my four year yogaversary!

We went up north for Easter and spent it with my dad and Eric’s family!

I ran my second race of the year – a very hilly and technical 25km trail race – in the rain!

Of course the highlight of my year was the absolutely amazing two-week vacation we took through Ireland, Northern Ireland and Scotland! It was a once-in-a-lifetime adventure and I loved almost every minute of it (I say that now looking back though when I was dangerously navigating traffic circles while also driving on the left side of the road I maybe wasn’t too happy… ha ha)

But seriously, I will never regret spending money on travel. Even though my savings account is still empty, I do not regret this trip one bit.

I said goodbye to the yoga studio where I started practicing four years ago (they just shut down the original studio because they’ve opened two others in town!)

After four long years of university, Eric graduated!! Whoo! So proud of him. For the first time in eight years, we are both working full-time jobs in September. You’d think that would mean we have a lot more money? Nope, just more bills, but we’re happy so I don’t care.

We went camping at Johnson Lake.

We celebrated two years of marriage.

I went wine touring for the first time during my coworkers bachelorette party.

We spent four amazing days camping on the Shuswap with my dad and brother.

IMG 3014

I attended a family reunion and was reunited with all of my aunts, uncles and cousins from my mom’s side of the family. We came from across three provinces to be together for two days.

I finished off 25 with one last race – an 18km trail race that my friend’s husband puts on.

And, finally, this past weekend Eric and I escaped from technology and cell service for one last camping weekend at beautiful Johnson Lake. You can see why it’s been nicknamed ‘The Caribbean of the North’

To sum it up; one big amazing international trip, two other out of country trips, multiple weekends full of the things I love (yoga, running, being outside with Eric and Chloe) and lots and lots of time with family (even though it was sometimes for a not good reason). It’s funny because when you look at my review of 24 post it’s very running focused, which is to be expected since I was training for the 50km race. But I feel like this review shows much more of me living a real, full, sometimes-hard-but-lots-of-times-good-life. I like it.

Here’s to 26 and everything the next year has in store!

What a fabulous year 25 was for you! So much fun to read recaps like this, plus it’s good to remind ourselves of all the positives we have in our lives. I need to be better about being grateful for what I have. Lately I’ve been so stressed and run down with everything I have going on – it’s so easy to forget how lucky I am to have what I have. Life is not always easy, but we need a certain dose of struggle to appreciate all the good things in our lives, right? Thanks for the reminder 🙂

I hope 26 is a great year for you! I look forward to following along on all your adventures this year. Have a fantastic birthday!!
