Meals, miles, books and looks of July!

I’m going to spare you all from my “this month has gone by so fast” comments. But wow, this summer is flying. And I know August will fly just as fast as we have plans every single weekend except one!

Onto my monthly recap…

MEALS

On our anniversary, Eric and I went out for lunch and had mexican food. I had the chimichanga and it was so dang good!

And I made a new recipe for the first time in MONTHS! This summer “pasta” recipe by Alli.

Oh and I’ve been drinking a TON of green smoothies! Remember when I blogged my steel cut oats recipe? Well after eating steel cut oats 5-6 times per week for breakfast for a good six months straight I have made the switch to smoothies. I blame the heat. My latest favourite combo includes banana, a frozen fruit mix of mangoes, pineapple, peaches and strawberries, spinach or kale, peanut butter, chocolate protein powder, plain greek yogurt, a splash of vanilla and a sprinkle of cinnamon and hemp seeds. SO yummy! And yes, they taste better when I drink them out of our giant mason jar :)

MILES

Meh, certainly nothing to sing home about. I only logged 67.6 miles / 108.7 km in July. I am no longer doing the race I was originally training for in August so my next race isn’t until the end of August. Between the heat and being busy on the weekends I haven’t been getting long runs in. I’m actually not really concerned about it, though. I’ve been doing a ton of cross-training including lots of strength workouts and HIIT sessions and lots of yoga and I feel really good! The picture above is from our July 1, Canada Day “doggy run club” :)

BOOKS

I read three books in July! All three of these books were great and I would recommend each of them. I gave them all four stars.

The Light Between Oceans – I really enjoyed this book and the characters in it. This is a story of a newly married couple living all alone on an island (he’s a lighthouse keeper) and they are having trouble conceiving. One day a boat washes up with a baby in it and they decide to keep her. However, they eventually learn that decision lead to great pain in someone elses life. One of the review’s on the back of this book says it best; “An extraordinary and heartrending book about good people, tragic decisions, and the beauty found in each of them.” I went back and forth about how many stars to give this book and only ended up giving it four stars because there were a few slower parts that dragged for me. Overall an awesome book that I recommend!

Black and Blue – Another great Anna Quindlen novel. This author has such a unique style of writing and she really creates very complex and real characters. This is the story of a woman and her pre-teen son as they change their identity to get away from her violent husband.

Labor Day – This book took me awhile to get into but I ended up really really enjoying it. I especially loved the way it ended! It’s about a boy and his mother and the turn their lives take when a convicted criminal ends up spending a long weekend with them.

LOOKS

I have some good looks for you from July! Side note, take a look at last July’s recap to see how much my hair has grown in a year! Crazy!

When we had our cool spell a couple of weeks ago I actually pulled out my JEANS for the first time in months! I am still loving this blue top from Costco.

This is the dress I wore to my friend Sam’s bachelorette party last weekend:

A new scarf and denim maxi skirt I picked up at a sidewalk sale the other day!

It’s kind of hard to see in the above photo but the scarf I bought has bicycles on it! It will be so perfect for my upcoming San Francisco trip, which is what first drew me to it!

And finally, I was super happy with this outfit that I put together yesterday! Honestly, I never used to wear sleeveless tops to work because my arms are my least favourite part of my body. But since I’ve been doing tons of strength training I am feeling way more confident about how my arms/body looks in general. Plus it’s just been such a hot summer, I need to rock the tank tops or I’d die!

Other highlights from July included celebrating our two year anniversary…

…and pulling off an amazing picnic event that we had been planning at work for months!

Overall a pretty stellar month. I’m not going to lie, the heat really got to me in early July and after a week of reprieve from it, it’s back (not quite as bad but getting up to 35 C / 95 F by midday and our house is oh so stuffy) but I’m just reminding myself that I love summer and in the dead of winter I’ll be wishing for summer weather. I’m still not at the point yet where I’m ready for summer to be over. A bit cooler weather would be nice, and I do love fall, but I’m excited for August and everything we have going on so I don’t want to miss summer away!

How was July for you? Are you still happy with summer or ready for it to go?

What were your meals, miles, books and looks of July?

You look FABULOUS! And you are right, your hair has grown a CRAZY amount!!!

I head about The Light Between the Oceans – wanted to read it but wasn’t sure if it would be some huge trigger for me…thoughts?

Our July was pretty much focused on our moved. Now that we are in the house (although it seems crazy that we’ve only been in it for a week), hopefully we can really finish unpacking and settling in!

    Happy Friday!

  2. You look fabulous! I say show off those arms as you’ve worked hard to get them so toned! Love your outfits and I especially love that scarf. It will be perfect for SF! Oh and I read all 3 books that you read and agree that they are all great! I only read 3 books in July and didn’t love any of them so I feel a little bit meh about reading right now. I need to get through a book I am reviewing for France Book Tours and then I am going to check out the new JoJo Moyes book as I was able to download it from the library.

July was busy… I packed a lot in but had a lot of fun. I do feel a little bit over-tired so am glad the weekend ahead is a quiet one for me. The inability to not sleep past 4-4:30 is catching up with me and I feel pretty zombie like by the end of the week. As far as summer, I am not ready for it to end. I love fall but I also love summer and there are a lot of things I want to do that I haven’t done yet. It helps that we have not had a super hot/humid summer. This week has been perfect as the humidity has been low and it’s been in the 80s, so 25C. Summer started late here so I hope it lasts well into September!

You look so good! Love your outfits!! I always love your hair, but I’m especially loving your hair right now!

I’m happy with summer most days, but every once in a while I wish for fall weather and sweatshirts :)

  4. Emilie says:

I want to read all three of those books! The first one sounds especially good. I think you look great in the tank top! Purple looks really good on you. July was actually my highest mileage month yet – 75 miles – which is low compared to most runners I know. I’m looking forward to August and my first 16 mile runs.

July was busy, busy, busy for me. I hope August is a little more calm and less stressful. I’m not ready for summer to be over yet (it’s actually been fairly mild except a few days where it got up close to 90-95). I’ve hardly done any summer activities – I’ve only spent one afternoon at my parents pool! Fall is my favorite time of the year, so I’m excited for it, but I wish I could make some more time for fun summer stuff…hopefully in August I’ll cram a bunch in!

  5. Leigh says:

Your hair definitely has gotten much longer! Are you liking it longer better? And love all of your outfits…especially the bike scarf :)

  6. Erin says:

Amber, you are looking seriously svelte! And your hair looks great, I like the length; it suits you.

  7. Nora says:

Love your outfits! Lookin’ good, friend. The green dress is adorable =)

Can’t go wrong with some Mexican food; one of my favorites (Sadly, I know it’s not healthy for me).

  8. That smoothie sounds fantastic! Lots and lots of protein in there. That green dress looks great too. Solid month!

  9. Lisa says:

I LOVED Light Between Oceans. It was such a good book.

  10. Kara says:

July was rough one for me, so I’m glad that August is here! We have practically NO plans, so I’m looking forward to just taking on every day as it comes. :)

That Mexican food looks amazing – is that at Fiesta Mexicana? I’ve been dying to go but Kyle doesn’t like spicy food at all :P

And I practically jumped for joy when I put jeans on during that crazy rainy spell, but I am glad that the heat is back now too.

  11. Stephany says:

Living in Florida, we’ll still get summer for the next, oh, 5 months or so? Haha. But I love it, so I am not going to complain! :)

You look so fab in all your outfits! I love your hair so much, it’s so pretty! And show off those arms, girl – you worked hard for them!

  12. Holly says:

I always love your outfits! I’m totally in the work-from-home-mom shorts and tank top rut these days, I really need to go shopping! I love summer but it’s been so hot here for the past little but that I’m just about ready for fall!

  13. Shoshanah says:

I love the bicycle scarf! Although in general I’m a big fan of how summer scarfs look. Which is kind of funny in a way, because I don’t really own a single one, and I’m not sure they’d work one me. But it’s definitely a goal of mine to add a few to my wardrobe and start wearing them more regularly.

  14. Lauren says:

I live those last two outfits. Being a scarf and bike fan, I love that scarf and the way it hangs. So cute! Yeah, I’m not a fan of my arms either. I feel like I work so hard on my upper body between weights and yoga and yet I don’t see much definition unless I flex them. Oh well, I just remind myself that bodies are different and that I am strong regardless. :)

  15. We’ve had the coldest summer in like ever. Well the coldest I can remember since I was like say 10 or something. I am not ready for it to be over. We’ve hardly been in our pool and spent more time sitting on beaches than in the water!

  16. I love that green dress :-)

July was wonderful!! I feel like I really made the most of each day. I want summer to last as long as possible. I go back to work near the end of August, so I’d like August to draaaaaag!
