I’m going to spare you all from my “this month has gone by so fast” comments. But wow, this summer is flying. And I know August will fly just as fast as we have plans every single weekend except one!
Onto my monthly recap…
On our anniversary, Eric and I went out for lunch and had mexican food. I had the chimichanga and it was so dang good!
And I made a new recipe for the first time in MONTHS! This summer “pasta” recipe by Alli.
Oh and I’ve been drinking a TON of green smoothies! Remember when I blogged my steel cut oats recipe? Well after eating steel cut oats 5-6 times per week for breakfast for a good six months straight I have made the switch to smoothies. I blame the heat. My latest favourite combo includes banana, a frozen fruit mix of mangoes, pineapple, peaches and strawberries, spinach or kale, peanut butter, chocolate protein powder, plain greek yogurt, a splash of vanilla and a sprinkle of cinnamon and hemp seeds. SO yummy! And yes, they taste better when I drink them out of our giant mason jar
Meh, certainly nothing to sing home about. I only logged 67.6 miles / 108.7 km in July. I am no longer doing the race I was originally training for in August so my next race isn’t until the end of August. Between the heat and being busy on the weekends I haven’t been getting long runs in. I’m actually not really concerned about it, though. I’ve been doing a ton of cross-training including lots of strength workouts and HIIT sessions and lots of yoga and I feel really good! The picture above is from our July 1, Canada Day “doggy run club”
I read three books in July! All three of these books were great and I would recommend each of them. I gave them all four stars.
The Light Between Oceans – I really enjoyed this book and the characters in it. This is a story of a newly married couple living all alone on an island (he’s a lighthouse keeper) and they are having trouble conceiving. One day a boat washes up with a baby in it and they decide to keep her. However, they eventually learn that decision lead to great pain in someone elses life. One of the review’s on the back of this book says it best; “An extraordinary and heartrending book about good people, tragic decisions, and the beauty found in each of them.” I went back and forth about how many stars to give this book and only ended up giving it four stars because there were a few slower parts that dragged for me. Overall an awesome book that I recommend!
Black and Blue – Another great Anna Quindlen novel. This author has such a unique style of writing and she really creates very complex and real characters. This is the story of a woman and her pre-teen son as they change their identity to get away from her violent husband.
Labor Day – This book took me awhile to get into but I ended up really really enjoying it. I especially loved the way it ended! It’s about a boy and his mother and the turn their lives take when a convicted criminal ends up spending a long weekend with them.
I have some good looks for you from July! Side note, take a look at last July’s recap to see how much my hair has grown in a year! Crazy!
When we had our cool spell a couple of weeks ago I actually pulled out my JEANS for the first time in months! I am still loving this blue top from Costco.
This is the dress I wore to my friend Sam’s bachelorette party last weekend:
A new scarf and denim maxi skirt I picked up at a sidewalk sale the other day!
It’s kind of hard to see in the above photo but the scarf I bought has bicycles on it! It will be so perfect for my upcoming San Francisco trip, which is what first drew me to it!
And finally, I was super happy with this outfit that I put together yesterday! Honestly, I never used to wear sleeveless tops to work because my arms are my least favourite part of my body. But since I’ve been doing tons of strength training I am feeling way more confident about how my arms/body looks in general. Plus it’s just been such a hot summer, I need to rock the tank tops or I’d die!
Other highlights from July included celebrating our two year anniversary…
…and pulling off an amazing picnic event that we had been planning at work for months!
Overall a pretty stellar month. I’m not going to lie, the heat really got to me in early July and after a week of reprieve from it, it’s back (not quite as bad but getting up to 35 C / 95 F by midday and our house is oh so stuffy) but I’m just reminding myself that I love summer and in the dead of winter I’ll be wishing for summer weather. I’m still not at the point yet where I’m ready for summer to be over. A bit cooler weather would be nice, and I do love fall, but I’m excited for August and everything we have going on so I don’t want to miss summer away!
How was July for you? Are you still happy with summer or ready for it to go?
What were your meals, miles, books and looks of July?
