RIP Garmin

2.5 years ago I wrote a post welcoming my new Garmin – aka my new running BFF – to the blog so I guess it’s only appropriate I write a post acknowledging it’s demise…

Someone got her little hands – or should I say teeth – on it and completely destroyed it while Eric and I were grocery shopping last night. We re-arranged and put Chloe’s crate next to the outlet so the Garmin was on top of her crate charging. I guess she somehow got it through the cracks and had a good two hours to gnaw on it in her kennel while we were gone. Suffice to say, it is definitely not fixable!

I was livid when I first came home and saw it. I screamed and swore and almost cried. I am doing this new thing where I try *really* hard to think before I act and be more level-headed about things that make me upset but there was no level-headed happening here. I’m seven weeks into my 18-week marathon training cycle and my Garmin just got destroyed? AHHHHHH!

But then I went to yoga. And I breathed and thought and relaxed. In the grand scheme of things, my Garmin being destroyed is not that big of a deal. It’s replaceable. My puppy is not. My heart is not (freaking out and stressing is not good for your heart ‘yo!). So I got over it quite quickly. Much quicker than I would have a year or two ago.

Shit happens.

Back to working on my level-headness and thinking before I react to things…

Question of the day: Are you level-headed?

  1. Oh man! She really killed that thing!

I first saw the pic and thought you must have had a horrible fall!

  2. I would have freaked out as well! I so could not handle having pets because I could not handle the destruction! I know it doesn’t happen very often, but having it happen at would just set me over the edge!

I am glad you calmed down though! I think it would take me a lot longer to let go of this experience than you did, so good for you!

I can be level headed, but if I am over-tired or sick, all reason goes out the window and I am NOT level headed. And then I tend to just cry over the littlest things and can’t stop crying.

Oh…that sucks. I would’ve been upset too. My dogs have destroyed a lot. Strangely, I get over it all very quickly. My husband on the other hand…nothing irks him more then when they destroy something.

  4. Becky says:

I think you had a good honest reaction, but I’m glad you were able to calm down quickly – and this way Chloe knows she’s definitely “in the dog house” for a few days!

  5. Puppies are replaceable too, but why would you want to? that would be it for that dog. done. finito. no mas. this is why I absolutely hate dogs. well, one reason.

  6. J says:

OMG I would have been furious! Usually when I am mad I get a little outwardly angry but then I just hold it inside and stew about it for a while. Its probably not the best thing but I am getting better at the whole process and letting go faster.

  7. Heather says:

YIKES!!! I lived with a roommate who had a dog that JUMPED on the kitchen table and chewed up my NEWLY purchased ipod. But lets look at the positive…now you have an excuse to shop!

  8. Lindsey says:

Not going to lie I would have had the exact same reaction as you! I always have to try and be more level headed about things too knowing that in situations like this it is not the end of the world, but I am overly dramatic at the same time.

  9. Holly says:

I would have been livid too! Our Chloe chewed up Nathan’s degree, one of my purses, an expensive pair of riding boots (and countless other pairs of shoes!) – and our baseboards. Ugh. I CAN be level-headed – it depends on the situation. I’m much more “high stress”, shall we say, than Nathan – but if he’s freaking out, I’m usually calm.

  10. Caroline says:

Oh no!! I’m so sorry, I would have been so upset too! That’s great that you were able to recover quickly afterward. I think in certain circumstances I maintain a level-head, but it’s not always easy. Yoga definitely helps.

  11. Kelly says:

I saw this last night on twitter and I was mentally freaking out for you! However, I’m glad you calmed down because like you said it’s not good for you to freak out and hopefully you can find something cheaper to get you through this training cycle at least. I am pretty level-headed, I tend to get more mad at myself than anyone else at times. But definitely being tired in any way makes me less level headed and this is why I need my sleep!

  12. I am pretty level headed … except when one of my clothing items gets ruined, or one of my shows doesn’t tape, LOL! I get more angry with inanimate objects than I do with people.

  13. Stephany says:

So funny to see who are animal people and who aren’t from the comments, hehe.

I am much more level-headed when it comes to my dog than I am in other situations. Luckily, he’s way past the puppy stage but still manages to get himself in all sorts of trouble. (I can never leave ANY type of food in my purse. He will always find it.) But I know he’s just a dog and getting angry at him isn’t going to help matters. I’m also wrapped around his fingers, if you can’t tell. ;)

That said, there are other situations when I am SO not level-headed. Like driving. Or when I can’t find something and GOOD GOD, I HAD IT A SECOND AGO, WHERE THE $#%& DID IT GO? Or when I’m overtired and grumpy. Sigh. It’s something I need to work on as well.

Sorry about your Garmin. She really went to town on it. =/

  14. Leigh says:

Oh man, that’s pretty bad! Now you know not to leave it on top of her crate :) I am super careful with what I leave out around the house because I never know when Harley will decide to chew something. Not that he does a lot, but he sure loves my socks and underwear! The worst thing he ever did was get into my purse and chew up a tube of lip gloss which got all over our carpet. I was so, so mad! But totally my fault because I left my purse open on the ground

  15. Ouch! Puppies can be so bad. When Kira was a puppy she destroyed so many things-nothing quite so expensive though.

I’m not level headed at all. I’m working on it, but it’s really hard. When I’m really upset I tend to flip out.

  16. phampants says:

Maybe this is time to be a full on naked runner as you mentioned previously. :)

  17. Sarah says:

My garmin had the exact same death, except it was on top of the fireplace mantle and the dog got it down (we have a big dog). The good news is you can get a new one!!

  18. Ugh! I would be so pissed. I don’t have a ton of patience for Jonah when she’s being annoying. However, I have also done marathon training mostly without a Garmin at times and you could often run on time (and assumed distance) and still probably do most of your workouts as noted. But I also know that once you have a Garmin, you really rely on knowing exact pace and distance at all times. Hope you can find a good solution for the rest of your training plan, Amber. I know that time always helps me realize that whatever I WAS freaking out about is not such a big deal. Hope your Tuesday is better than Monday!

  19. OH NO!!! I would have cried and I’m not training for anything. I’m very attached to my Garmin though.

  20. Lauren says:

    Oh no :(

I’m so sorry about your watch. I would be very, very angry as well. As a temporary solution, I know there are a few apps on the iphone that track distance and time.

I know it’s a lot of money to fork out but, as you already know, Garmin’s are definitely worth the investment. Maybe look at it this way–now you’ll know to be extra careful with your belongings around Chloe. Thank goodness it wasn’t something that could never be replaced!

  21. I get that dogs chew. But, electronics? Electronics that aren’t dangly wires just asking to be chewed? Seriously? Good grief! Sorry for your very dramatic loss.

  22. eemusings says:

Nope, not at all. Except when it comes to MAJOR catastrophes. Funnily enough, I am eerily calm and practical in those cases. I just kind of freeze, shut down and go into autopilot – I suppose because I’ve had to deal with so many job/financial/car setbacks in my adult life. SUCKS about the Garmin, but great that yoga gave you some perspective pretty quickly.

  23. Ouch. Glad the puppy is okay, even if your Garmin isn’t!

  24. Jessica says:

I would have reacted the same way and put myself in a time out. Wow, she really worked that over. RIP Garmin!

  25. mandy says:

I think that your reaction was completely justified. Sorry to hear that the pup destroyed it. Good for you for calming down as quickly as you did. I like to think that I’m level headed but sometimes I’m really not.

  26. Nora says:

I can be level-headed. Depends on the situation! That is definitely something I would have flipped out over as well. I’m not good at anything that has initial shock value to it, not at all.

After that I can usually focus and sort through things.

Bummer about the Garmin for sure. I guess this means you get to welcome a new one into your home and heart though, right?

  27. Nicole says:

Oh that hurts!! I would have done the exact same thing…

  28. Kyria says:

That sucks! I would have gone ballistic! I don’t like people to even use my stuff because I am afraid of something like that happening! But you are right; it is JUST stuff and it’s replaceable! It’s good that you have such a good attitude about it.

  29. Naomi says:

Poor Garmin, but now you have an excuse to get a new one! :D

  30. [...] got spayed on Tuesday. It was coincidental that it coincided with this but now I kind of hope she always associates chewing up things with going to the vet Anyways, [...]
