Morning at Pike Place Market
Hello from Memphis, Tennessee! We are here for a 2-hour layover before continuing on to Orlando. Our flight was delayed so we won’t get in until midnight. However, that’s 9:00 PM PST so that shouldn’t feel too bad – except maybe when we get up tomorrow at 7:00 AM (4:00 AM PST).
We didn’t get to Seattle until late last night due to a stop in Bellingham for some outlet shopping (we hit up the lululemon and nike outlets!) and thai food. So the only sighting that happened of the space needle was as we drove by on the interstate last night.

After a restless night of sleep where I dreamt that we slept until 11 am (our flight left at noon) I was wide awake at 6:30 AM. We decided to get up and see at least a little bit of Seattle before leaving. We hopped on the link rail to go downtown.

Once there we headed straight for Pike Place Market. It was around 8:30 AM so it definitely was a lot quieter and less bustling than the time I went with Lisa but it was still fun. We got some pastries from a french bakery and then hit up the original Starbucks for eggnog lattes.

We ate our breakfast while sitting on benches overlooking the Seattle waterfront. It was gearing up to be a beautiful day!

After we were done we wandered through the market a bit. One of the guys at the fish stand said, “Oh, I see your Canadian. I guess I should say ‘Good Morning, eh!’” I asked what gave us away and he said it was Eric’s little poppy! In Canada, you can buy cloth/plastic poppies this time of year to wear on your jacket in honour of Remembrance Day (which is tomorrow).

I thought that was pretty observant of him
Before we knew it we were at the airport lining up to catch our flight! Not-so-fun fact: Eric is terrified of flying. He is actually really scared of heights in general but he really doesn’t like flying. He did not sleep a wink our entire 9-hour, red eye flight to Amsterdam last year.
He gets really nervous and anxious leading up to a flight and then any little bump or drop that happens on the plane he feels it and gets nervous again. We got a free sample of these little “dream waters” and he drank two of them and apparently they helped make him drowsy and he actually slept a bit on the flight from Seattle to Memphis.

I’m thankful he’s willing to face his fear and go on trips with me. He loves traveling as much as I do, just hates the flying part to get there! I feel kind of indifferent towards flying, I wouldn’t say I *love* it, but I don’t mind it. And I can at least read or sleep in a plane (I get carsick if I try to do either of those things while driving).
Hope you had a great Thursday! We are heading to the Wizarding World of Harry Potter ALL day tomorrow so watch for another update tomorrow night some time

Questions of the day: Are you scared, indifferent, or love flying? If you are scared of flying too, any advice for Eric?

I love short flights, but I have a problem sleeping on planes so long ones are a pain in the ass for me. I didn’t sleep at all on the flight when I went to Europe and ended up being awake for about 48 hours because we started our day as soon as we got there…puke.
I am a freak and I enjoy flying. Like we are moving through the air! But sometimes on solo flights when I feel sick, I just want to be home!
Ah, I love being reminded of Pike Place market. And that pastry looks so good. Sunny days in Seattle are the best. Sometimes I kind of want to move there, but then I think of the traffic and the rain. Have a great time in FL!
I love Seattle! I am not afraid of flying, but my Mom gets kind of nervous. She takes a quarter or half of a dramamine. Just enough to chill out but not too much that she can’t function later. Have fun at HP World!
Lulu outlets are amazing!! : ) I went to one in Toronto!
Enjoy Harry Potter!!!
I am sort of indifferent about flying. It used to be exciting, now it is like getting on a really big bus for a long bus ride.
I don’t love it, but i have absolutely no fears whatsoever.
Pike’s Market will forever make me think of you!
We sell poppies here, too, but ours look different!!
I don’t hate flying but after doing it so much I’m definitely indifferent. Particularly after so many long-haul flights. Yuck! I get into a routine with settling in, eating the meal, watching a movie and then taking a sleeping pill and sleeping through at least 7-8 hours of the flight. Then another movie, breakfast and landing. I’m not scared it’s just definitely not a really fun experience.
I am a nervous flyer! Every bump and I think the worse. I do not sleep at all while my hubby passes right out. I try to ready and listen to music – anything to distract myself really!
Sounds like a lovely first day of vacation! I’ve always wanted to visit Seattle!
It’s too bad Eric doesn’t like flying, but luckily he loves traveling enough to put up with it. I actually LOVE being in planes, I just get restless if it’s for too long. I love the going up/going down parts, I think it’s the most fascinating thing in the world. I’ll admit though that my 10.5 hour flight home from Greece this summer was literally TORTURE. I actually just sat for the last 2 hours staring at my lap, wishing I could be home. Long flights are definitely NO fun. I also can’t sleep on planes, but I do love the extra me-time I get!!
Yay, this made me really excited for my trip to Seattle next year!
I’m not scared of flying at all, so maybe I’m closer to indifferent. If I could borrow someone else’s stomach/inner ear I probably would even not mind it. Unfortunately I used to get really sick on planes when I was younger, I’ve gotten better but I still really can’t read at all so I only like jetblue where I can watch TV. If they ever put internet and places to plug in laptops I may even move closer to indifferent. I’ll probably never like it because even now when I don’t get outright sick on planes, I still have serious stomach issues. You know how if you bring a water bottle on a plane it blows up and then deflates… that’s what my stomach does. It’s a good time, let me tell you. I love traveling though, so I see flying as a necessary evil
I AM SO EXCITED TO SEE YOU ON SATURDAY!
OK, now that I have *that* out of my system, flying? I wouldn’t know! I’ve never flown on a plane before. Crazy, right? I’m hoping 2013 will be the year I can break this and finally get myself on an airplane. It’s just nuts.
I don’t really mind flying, I’m sure because I spent so much time doing it flying back and forth for college. And in a lot of ways I kind of enjoy flying, I think because it’s time where I can just sit and read and listen to music and nap without feeling obligated to really do anything else. And can I add that I’m awfully impressed that you found the time to blog while on a layover!
Normally I’m fine with flying but sometimes I get a little nervous. So jealous you got breakfast at Pike Place. Love visiting there. SO much good food.
I guess I’m indifferent to flying. I’ve done a lot of it so a lot of the time I just find it a little boring and I almost wish I could get to my destination faster. But then I think about the fact that I’m in an AIRPLANE….how crazy is it that I can fly through the air, really fast, in a weird phallic tube?!!
I’m definitely not afraid though- I’m usually one of the most calm people on the plane when and if the turbulence starts.
Enjoy your vacation!
I’m like you–not crazy about flying but at least I can read or watch a movie. I can’t do either of those things in a car without feeling ill so I would rather fly than drive a long distance. I hope you guys have a fabulous time! Can’t wait to hear all about it!!
You can’t leave your loyal lulu-obsessed readers hanging. How was the outlet? Did you get any great stuff?
I had forgotten about the poppies. Last year we were in Toronto for the Chicago Bears game the weekend before Remembrance/Veteran’s Day and they were selling them at Tim Horton’s and of course we had to get them. I loved how EVERYONE was wearing them from news anchors to ushers at the game.
HAVE FUN!
I. HATE. FLYING. I’m right there with Eric. As in, I any bump or turbulence? No thank you. I’m fine if I am reading a good book or have someone’s hand to squeeze but I definitely get nervous. I may or not pray the entire time during take-off…
Dream Water? Never heard of it but will have to investigate it
Can’t wait to hear about your day; have a lovely one!!!!
Ummmm . . . intrigued by that water!
As for flying – I LOVE to travel (but you know that) and that even means flying. Sure turbulence bites the big one but I just hang on and enjoy the ride!
Although I will confess I used to be afraid of flying over water. But that’s because I have water issues. Thankfully I got over that!
It’s so crazy that you had a layover in Memphis on the 10th, because I was leaving Memphis on the 9th – so crazy!
Ben hates flying, which kind of strikes a good balance – I’m the calm one who plans and makes sure we get through security, checked in, and he’s good once we’re on the other side. It’s a good balance I guess!
I love flying. I love it even more after spending 13 hours in the car each way driving to/from florida last week.
I enjoy flying, but I hate taking off and landing! Once we’re in the air I love looking out the window at everything, but I haaaaate the beginning and end!
What?!?! We were in Seattle this week and at the Pike Place Market yesterday. Wish we could have met up!
I miss my beloved Seattle. It’s been much too long since we’ve been back.
I love Seattle. Pike Market is the best place ever.
I hate flying. Im usually ok when Im actually in the air, provided I dont think about it. My problem is all the anxiety before getting onto the plane. I dont do well with that.
I am pretty indifferent to flying … I don’t get scared, but I do get bored and uncomfortable.
