The White Room

This room has defeated us.

Last night, at about 5:00 PM, after having put in approximately 30 hours of painting time over the last six days Eric and I called ‘Uncle’.

We are leaving the above pictured bedroom white. We literally do not have energy to paint it.

Painting has gotten to that point where we’re so close, yet so far. All the walls have at least one coat on them, the majority have 2-3. Most of the baseboards have been painted but there is still quite a bit of touch-ups and trim left to paint. At least another full days worth of work.

We didn’t really have a colour plan for this room, we were just going to use whatever was left over (which turns out to be the same colour we used in the living room) but then we decided it could just stay white for awhile. Maybe painting it will be a summer project. It’s just going to be a spare room/gym room anyways, it doesn’t need to be a pretty colour.

I am exhausted, you guys. I was there painting until 10:30 last night and Eric was there until midnight.

I am also in that exhausted-scatterbrained mode right now. Yesterday morning I misplaced a memory stick that had a HUGE work project on it. I was freaking out and crying at work and calling Eric to scour our apartment for it.

Ya, it was in my jacket pocket the entire time. Sigh. When that happens on a Monday I think you know how the rest of the week is going to go!

How’s your week going?

  1. I like the room white. It’s all what you do with the wall hangings and furniture so it will still look great. :-)

I think it’s a good idea to keep that room white ~ you can accessorize it to make it more colourful :D Our entire condo is green on the inside – when we move, I will NEVER have another green wall, as long as I live! My week’s going well so far – apart from the cold and snow. Where’s spring?

Taking a break from painting is not a bad idea at all :) You can totally jazz the room up with color splashes or accents (if you want, since it just a gym anyway!)

Get some rest, be good to yourself :)

  4. 30 hours of painting is rough! Geez, I wouldn’t have made it 30 minutes!

I’m glad you’re calling it off! You still have a move in front of you & school, this seems like the humane decision, and if it bugs you you’ll be able to do it when you have another burst of energy :)

I hope you reward yourself! :)

I don’t blame you, you guys have worked so hard! And the room truly does look nice as is. Leaving it white/saving it for a summer project is probably the best thing you could have done for your sanity :)
Julia and I got the keys to our condo today! We’re somewhere on pace with you guys now. Unless you’ve actually packed more than 4 boxes. We keep looking around our completely unpacked house and being like “Yeah, I don’t really see anything to pack either..” But we have gotten rid of SO. MUCH. Happy moving!!

I don’t blame you for calling it quits before you painted that room! You have done so much already and if it’s only being used as a workout room, definitely no hurry.

When are you starting to move all of your stuff?

  8. Amber says:

30 hours?! My goodness, you guys are driven. :) I don’t blame you at all for stopping, you have done A TON and should be so proud of yourselves!
I had never heard the phrase “calling uncle” before!

    • MissAmber says:

Haha really? It means giving up. We used to say it when we were kids wrestling, you’d call ‘uncle’ if you give up and want to be let out of the wrestling hold :)

I’m the queen on losing things that are in an obvious place. One time I lost my brand new phone IN the sleeve of my jacket. (in my defense I had like 15 layers on cause it was so cold out!) But yeah I started crying and it was a big production.

  10. Stephany says:

Oh, my gosh! I would agree! You guys have been monsters at painting and I think the room looks fine as it is. Since it’s going to be a personal gym anyway, you can always spice it up in other ways. :)

And now it’s time for the move…eep!

i’m going to be painting two walls of the kitchen (left out the third for now because it would entail moving the fridge by myself) while my husband is out of town next week and I have plans for painting two walls in the great room and the fireplaces/bancos. I’m already tired and I haven’t started!

You know what? I like the white. It looks nice and crisp against your lovely wood floors.

6 days, wowza! And Eric up until midnight — what a champ!

  14. I think it looks great staying white! You can add color in so many other ways!

6 days is a looooong time to be painting.

  15. Kelly says:

I’m really glad you left that room white- you guys have done A LOT!
I also, like Caroline, tend to lose things that are in an obvious place. My biggest thing is when I put something exactly where it belongs, but assume I didn’t and look everywhere for it except where it should be. I have folders at work for each day of the week and I put what I need in there probably 80% of the time and yet I never look there unless I remember putting it in. You’d think I’d learn my lesson!

  16. Erin says:

That is a LOT of hours spent on painting!!!! We’re getting ready to tackle the task here at our home…….
P.S. I hear ya on the Monday loss of a memory stick. MY Monday started with one period of my classes being deleted (from the electronic gradebook.) At first, they were telling me “We can’t recover them” and I was ready to totally flip out. (27 weeks of graded assignments just GONE like that—-freaked me out!) Luckily my Tuesday started off MUCH better–with an email saying they had recovered the files :) I’m glad your stick turned up in your pocket! :)

  17. Nicole says:

id call uncle too! :) you can paint it later… MOVE IN! :)

  18. Good move leaving the room white. Nothing wrong with that at all. Honestly, Im amazed you had it in you to paint so much. I’d be doing one room and saying “screw it, thats enough”. You saw my awful walls. :)

  19. Good call on calling Uncle… When you hit your limits, it’s best to walk away and tackle that room at another time! I did the same thing – I painted all of my rooms except the bathroom. I ended up painting that 3 months later when my mom came to visit. Best decision.

It’s going to be the best feeling when you move in and give your keys to your landlord. Coming home to the same home every day & not splitting your time between both places is going to be amazing! :)

BUSY. Between various shifts, overtime, freelance, car worry, new motorbike purchase and assorted stuff to organise, post engagement stuff, lots of social events trying to maintain a semblance of fitness….I cannot wait til the month is over!

  21. shoshanah says:

I completely understand. Let’s just say we moved into our house over a year and go and still have some room half painted. Just try not to let it go a year like us. Cuz once you it’s it takes quite a bit of motivation to finish, motivation we still haven’t found.

  22. gina says:

Wow. I can’t believe you pretty much painted your entire place so quickly. It took over a year for us to finish our downstairs (mainly because it took so long for me to choose the colors)! :-) Good job!

  23. Alejandra says:

I re-painted my bedroom by myself. I was so excited and couldn’t wait to get started. Three coats and two days later I was exhausted and wishing I had never started the project. I can’t imagine painting a whole house!!! I bet it looks great and you’ll be happy you did it now when you’re not moved in.

  24. Emily Jane says:

Time to take some time for YOU! And white rooms are all the rage now. Just accessorise with tonnes of prints, photos, knick knacks… it’ll look lovely!

  25. Deidre says:

    Nothing wrong with write rooms…

Wow that is some SERIOUS painting though.

  26. I would take a break too! If it isn’t going to be to crowded in there with furniture, it will be really easy for you to clear it out and paint it at a later date.

  27. Mom says:

Just be sure to wash the walls. That is the room I’ll be sleeping in. :-) It looks good white with that flooring anyway.

  28. I actually really like the white in there; I’m glad you kept it.

  29. kilax says:

I don’t blame you for leaving this room white. I absolutely HATED painting our house. It took us over 3 years to do it all! (The bedroom and guest bedroom and bathrooms were what took forever)
