Dear Trader Joe’s

Dear Trader Joe’s,

We met for the first time this week.

It’d heard a lot about you and had a feeling we’d fall in love, but you just never know about these things. I walked through your doors wary of what was to come.

At first glance, you just seemed like another grocery store. Dairy, meat, aisles full of packaged food. Nothing too special.

Then I saw your prices and you started to win me over.

I tasted your dark chocolate peanut butter cups, and you won me over even more.

I couldn’t stop staring when I saw you had my favourite Clif Bars for only $0.99 each.

I had to stock up.

There were so many different sauces and creams it made my eyes hurt.

I had trouble narrowing it down to just two kinds.

By this point, I was pretty sure I was falling in love with you and I wasn’t sure what to do about it.

I was about to leave and then I saw something that sealed the deal and caused you to win over my heart forever.

$2.99 bottles of wine. $2.99.

And it was good wine too. (Clearly considering I already demolished half a bottle in only a couple of days).

That was it, I had ventured where many bloggers had ventured before, and along with many of them my heart (and stomach) was stolen.

There’s just one little issue.

The whole, you-being-five-hours-away-and-across-that-pesky-border thing.

It’s such a hassle to get to you. And no-one likes long distance relationships.

Move closer to me Trader Joe’s. I promise that I will be good to you and make it worth your while.

Forever yours,

PS: The winner of my Born to Run giveaway is Megan!

    Hahahaha! I love this 🙂

Another option is for YOU to move closer to a Trader Joes. I can walk to one, so there is always my neighborhood 🙂

  2. If it makes ya feel any better, I don’t have a Trader Joe’s either!

  3. abbi says:

I’m about an hour and a half away from the nearest Trader Joe’s (one without the wine – the ones with wine are further). My mom and sister drive two and a half hours to meet me for the final hour and a half for our treks to Trader Joe’s. We need a very large vehicle to pile in all of our stuff from our stock up trips!

  4. I am glad that you had such a positive experience at TJ’s! What I like about them is that at my store, they have huge Green G’s on the shelf for Gluten Free products so it’s easy to figure out what is or isn’t GF. 🙂

And yes, 3 buck chuck rocks. I mean, I do not have a well-developed pallette so I think it tastes just great!

I hope TJ’s comes to Canada soon!! Did you check out the choc covered espresso beans? Those are my fave TJ treat! 🙂

  5. Anais says:

LOL! You have no idea how many emails I’ve sent Trader Joe’s asking them to move to Canada (or at the very least to open some stores very, very close to the border). Hopefully one day… I miss TJ too!

  6. Nicole says:

I live in the good ole usa and have never been to trader joes!! there isnt one close by me either so ive never been to one! LOL

  7. Amanda says:

I am so incredibly lucky that there is a TJ’s across the street from Boyfriend’s house. I can walk there. I feel your pain though, as I was introduced to the store on a trip and then had to wait three years for one to open in Michigan.

  8. Emily Jane says:

Okay at first glance I thought this was going to be some sort of hardware store!! But wow… it’s probably a good thing we don’t have those up here… those prices are way too good!!

  9. Megan says:

I’ve never been to Trader Joe’s. I have no idea where the nearest TJ’s is!

So excited that I won the giveaway! I sent you a DM on Twitter with my information. 🙂

  10. Heather says:

Trader Joe’s are so far and few between. There are 3 in Atlanta, but they are so hard to get to. I LOVE their yogurt and cilantro dip. O.M.G

  11. he he he…

Welcome to the dark side. 🙂

  12. Becky says:

Life without Trader Joe’s is sad indeed. Can you order things online? 🙂

  13. Samantha says:

I’ve never been to a Trader Joe’s, but now, I’m so intrigued to check one out! I’m going to have to search and see if we have one near us.

  14. Leigh says:

I’ve never been but have seen it all over the internet and would have to go someday! If only they brought them to Canada!

  15. Lacey Bean says:

TJ’s Green Curry Simmer Sauce is AMAZING. Actually all of their Indian food/sauces are delicious.

  16. Nora says:

I’m so glad that you were able to experience the wine which we call “Two Buck Chuck” around here. Just be careful of the hangover that’s sure to follow 😉

Thrilled you got to experience their store and that you loved it. It is definitely one of my favorites!

  17. BostonRunner says:

I agree with Kelly, the sensible solution to this problem would be to move closer to Trader Joe’s – May I suggest Boston? It’s a lot like Canada (or what I would imagine Canada to be) and there are a lot of Canadians here and we like hockey : )

p.s. my roommates live on Trader Joe’s wine. good stuff.

  18. E says:

Hey, I live there. Crazy. Sorry we’re so far away. We could arrange a parcel service. 🙂

  19. Morgan says:

I still have yet to go to a Trader Joes! Love the love letter! LOL!

  20. Kyla Roma says:

Ah! You got two buck chuck! So jealous!! I’ve been to whole foods, but I still haven’t found a trader joes to explore- it’s definitely on my list 🙂

  21. I’m glad you enjoyed your time at Trader Joe’s! I was going to tell you to try the pb cups, but you did so yay! Sorry you don’t have one nearby. They are pretty fun and cheap to shop at.

  22. liane says:

    Welcome to the dark side…
You’ll be plotting ways to get back there now!
    Don’t say I didn’t warn you 😉

  23. Nikki says:

*sigh* I feel your pain. It’s not across the border, but TJ’s IS about 2 hours away from me. I may or may not have spent my entire expense check for mileage for a work meeting in the TJ’s area AT TJ’s. What? I see no problem with that!

  24. Lisa says:

I LOVE Trader Joe’s. Much better than Whole Foods in my opinion.

  25. Amanda says:

I hear about Trader Joe’s all the time on the radio. Sadly, the closest one is about an hour away! I’ve always wanted to go to one, but Atlanta is a crazy area to drive in, so I may have to wait…

  26. Trader Joe’s is pretty fabulous eh? Im completely obsessed, and whenever I go down there I spend way too much money stocking up on everything I cant get here.
Their multigrain pancake mix is incredible btw. As are their spice mixes.

  27. that’s cool! i have also just found the trader joe’s here in Raleigh. it’s pretty cool.

  28. Ayla says:

Lucky! I still haven’t been to Trader Joe’s yet as I haven’t even stepped foot in the US yet.. which is ridiculous as I live fairly close to the border. I’ll get to finally visit both once Nov 23rd finally gets here though! Can.not.wait.

That vodka sauce sounds quite fabulous and I’m going to try and remember to pick some up when I finally get the chance.

  29. I would love to have a Trader Joe’s near me … I will have to wait until I am in the US to go again!

  30. Abby says:

What?!?! Clif bars for $.99??!! Wine for $2.99?!?! There are like 5 Trader Joe’s in the Tucson-metro area…and I have not walked into one yet.

My family (Lisa, my sister-in-laws) alll are Trader Joe’s shoppers. And at occasional family get-togethers they will bring dark-choc almonds, pretzels, etc….

But I was never really sold on it.

I figured it was expensive. I think I need to stop in this week. Wow!

  31. shoshanah says:

I love Trader Joe’s! But unfortunately I don’t have one near me now. But used to always stock up on snacks for my dorm room back in college there. And when I was little I used to tell people it was my favorite store.

  32. debbie says:

Oh, those prices… they MUST come to Canada!!! But would everything still be so cheap if they did…?

  33. Stephany says:

We don’t have a Trader Joe’s around here. 🙁 Our nearest one is 8 hours away. NONE in Florida. Horrible! We do have a Whole Foods, but it’s about 40 minutes away so I never manage to make it up there.

It sounds like the PERFECT place, though!

  34. Amber says:

There’s one opening here in Des Moines soon and I am SOOO excited! Right now the closest one is 4 hours away in Minneapolis!

  35. I’ve never been but have heard some AWESOME things. I wish there was one close. I think the closest one to Florida though is the new one opening in Atlanta, Ga. Sadface.

  36. RoadBunner says:

Trader Joe’s is one of the top 3 reasons I will never move back to Hawaii (they don’t have TJ’s there). LOVE it!

  37. Holly says:

I had a dream about Trader Joe’s the other night… and in it they finally opened one in Canada. I was so pumped. Until I woke up.

I found this blog post by searching for “Trader Joe’s in Canada”. Ha. I hope ONE day they come here! The closest one to me is 7+ hours away… and across the border. Blah.

  38. Martin says:

I have a dream that one day all borders will be abolished…

  39. […] this means I get to stop at Trader Joe’s on my way back on Monday. […]

  40. Sara says:

Ahh, I found this when I googled “Trader Joes Canada”. Every once and a while I check and see if there’s been any progress on them maybe coming over. At least this gave me a good laugh. Good to know I’m not the only one!

  41. Nicole says:

@Sara – that’s exactly how I got here too. It always sounded like a great store, but since hearing tales of little s’mores bites and frozen chocolate-covered bananas, I am officially on the ‘Bring Trader Joe’s to Canada’ bandwagon. I just got a Whole Foods five minutes away and it’s awesome, but too pricey to shop at everyday. Plus, to my knowledge, no frozen bananas.
