Happy Monday!
In case you missed it:
- I’m posting about my Long Slow Distance Runs every Sunday afternoon now. This week was 11 miles: Portland Marathon Training: 11 Miles
***********************
Friday night Eric and I packed some snacks and hopped in the car for a 1.5 hour road-trip to the Starlight Drive-in Theatre.
I had heard lots about this place but had never been. On a Friday night when we had no other plans and admission for two movies is only $9 each, it sounded like a fun way to spend the evening!
We packed some veggie pitas, apples and blue corn chips in an attempt to be healthy. BUT, the apples and blue corn trips didn’t even get touched because we couldn’t resist popcorn and skittles once we got there! Whoopsie! We did eat the pitas though and got our veggies for the evening

The first movie didn’t start until 8:45 PM and we got there at 7:30 PM (upon the recommendation of the website) and there was already a big line-up!

After spending about 10-15 minutes crawling through this line-up we were in and secured a great parking spot in the second row. And… then we had an hour to kill! So we walked around and took some pictures!
The biggest screen in North America (apparently!)

Did a little bit of All Over Yoga!

Posted an Operation Beautiful note in the bathroom.

And then we got some popcorn and settled into the car for the movie! Side note: Watching a movie from your car is sooo much more comfy than the movie theatre seats!

Since it was a double-feature we saw Despicable Me and Inception. Despicable Me was a really cute movie, I really liked it!

I was really, really looking forward to Inception because I’d heard so many great things about it on Twitter and Facebook. Unfortunately, despite my best efforts, I started dozing off at the end of the movie.
Overall, I’d say that yes, it was a good movie (and I LOVE Leo!) but it wasn’t as great as everyone hyped it up to be. I was kind of disappointed. And I didn’t have any weird dreams afterward (not yet anyways) but maybe that’s because I fell asleep during the movie!!
We didn’t get home until 3:00 AM on Friday night! I don’t even remember the last time I stayed up that late. I was exhausted and we immediately crashed and slept until almost noon the next day.
Overall it was a great, but very long and exhausting night, driving 1.5 hours home at 1:30 am is not fun. I think the next time we go we will camp close to the theatre, or skip the double-feature and only see one show.
Has anyone else ever been to a drive-in theatre? I never went to one as a kid so this was my first time going! Also, who else has seen Inception? Thoughts?
PS: Happy Birthday to my Mom! Love you!

I’ve never been to a drive in before, looks like so much!
We saw the late showing of Inception on Saturday night and I kept nodding off off during the last 45 mins or so. I was so mad at myself because I was really enjoying the movie.
Leo’s acting just keeps getting better!
I haven’t been to a drive-in since I was in about middle school – but they’re so much fun! Love that you did so much before the movie – and you make me want to see Despicable Me even more now!
I haven’t been to a drive in for a long long time. Back when I was a kid. I didn’t even know they still had them!

I haven’t been to a drive-in since I was a child – maybe 4? I am not even sure. I think we saw Crocodile Dundee or something like that! I dont’ remember watching much of the movie. Since I was so young, I think I was more interested in eating popcorn/candy and bugging my older siblings!! What a fun date night for you guys!
I feel like by the time I get around to watching movies in the theater, they are so hyped up, they are just bound to be a disappointment…
And, as a total Francophile, I am jealous that your food has the French translation on it!!
How much fun! I have never been to a drive-in, though I’d love to go to one =)
I saw both of those movies recently and Despicable Me cracked me up. “He’s so fluffy I could die!” <— that little girl was just hilarious. Loved it.
And Inception, well, that was just a headtrip. Like you, I wasn’t totally sure how much I really liked it (and I fell asleep twice in it!) but Leo did a great job and I didn’t have any crazy dreams either. I wasn’t totally crazy about the ending, but I did some reading about what the movie means & etc, so I guess that helped but at the same time, still kind of on the fence with it.
I have never been. I have always wanted to go but we don’t have one near us anymore.
I’ve been to drive-in theatre once in my life and it was fun! We went to see Inception last weekend… it was really good! I think my friend went to the same drive in as you last week…she posted about seeing both movies at a drive-in, so my guess is that they are the same. Fun!
There was a drive-in by my old college town that was always “in the plans” but we never actually did it… I think my friends and I always had such good intentions, but never got off our lazy butts to do anything!
I’ve never been to the drive-in, but we have one about thirty minutes from our house. I might talk Husband into going when the weather cools off.
I’ve seen Despicable Me, and I thought it was cute. I haven’t seen Inception yet, but I really want to!
Maybe you should go to Inception during the day? If it was late or you were tired, yeah, I could see how it wouldn’t be very good or you would fall asleep during it. I would go to an early feature when you’re more alert and (no offense) can pay attention to the intricacies of the movie. That’s what makes the movie special, so if you’re watching it and not really able to think about it very hard, then yeah, you won’t like it! It will just seem silly.
I did like the movie. It just didn’t “blow me away”.
We won’t be spending another $20 to see it at the theatre, but I’ll rent it when it’s on video and make sure I’m not tired when I watch it, hopefully then I can appreciate it more!
If you were sleeping or even dozing during part of it at the end, then you missed some pretty important parts so I would say to give it another chance. It is a thinker movie and you definitely can’t appreciate it if you miss any bit of it. Also, if you did miss some of it, and Eric didn’t really like it either, then his opinion can cloud your opinion too.
Fun! We had a drive-in in our town growing up, so that’s always what I think of when I think of summer – we would go EVERY SINGLE WEEKEND the entire summer. I haven’t been in years, though. There’s one just a few miles from here and I’m constantly talking about going, but never follow through
I miss the drive in! It was one of my favorite things as a kid. I think I need to find one close by and make a date with the BF to see a movie or two!!
I’ve never been to a drive in! There used to be one in Kamloops but it’s been closed forever. How the heck did you hear the movie anyway? Did they have those little speakers right beside your window? Drive ins remind me of the movie Grease! “Oh Sandy!” lol
You tune your car radio to a certain channel and the sound comes in over your speakers! They also have big outdoor speakers so you can hear it if you’re sitting outside.
Oh fun! I went to the drive in a few times in high school with friends. There was one about 30 min away. It was a lot of fun and less about the movies than the experience. I think now the closest one is 2.5 hrs from here. It’s definitely something that’s dying out. So glad that you two enjoyed it. I haven’t seen Inception yet, but have heard some people who love it and some people who say it’s just fine.
There is actually one right here where I live, the only one in the state of NJ. Sadly, IO haven’t gone yet this season, though I really really want to. My sis went the other day but only stayed for the first movie, she was going to stay for Inception but since it was so long and she was already falling asleep she decided to skip-we might try to go see it together on Friday.
Chris and I went to a drive in theatre last year for my first time – it was SO much fun! It looked a lot like yours and you got to see two movies too. I want to go back! Sounds like you got two great movies, I absolutely loved Despicable Me – soo cute!! : )
P.s. I always pack healthy things when I do trips like that too, sporting events, vacations etc. and then can never resist the good stuff – darn!
I’ve never been to a drive-in movie. We had one in my town but it got tore down before I could ever go to it. It sounds like an awesome experience!
There is a drive-in movie theater in the town where my parents have a beach house. Ironically, when we were there last week, they were also playing Despicable Me. I wanted to go … but, we never wound up making it there (dinners in that house don’t usually start before 8PM). That said, we did make it to the drive-in a few years ago to see Mama Mia. I swear, certain movies are better than others at the drive-in.
I used to go to the drive-in every summer! Unfortunately the one here in Winnipeg is shut down now.
I love going to the drive in! Its so fun! There is one close to me too and its neat to go every once in a while!!!
great job on the LSD run too!
sounds like fun! (minus the drive). I’ve never been to a drive-in so I’d love to go sometime! though, I’d have to clean my windshield first, haha. I don’t know if I could do a double feature though! I would start dozing off too. I don’t think one can really appreciate Inception when they are tired. It is such a complicated plot you really have to be on top of it!
I was wide awake and loved Inception. (especially Joseph Gordon Levitt! such a cutie!). Haven’t seen Despicable Me but I’ve heard only good things. I gotta see that next!
P.S. I was just catching up on all your posts I missed and I LOVE your Operation Beautiful posts. it’s good to remind ourselves that we are beautiful, valued and worthy. and to appreciate our bodies that we so often mentally beat ourselves up about. I know I do that all the time.
and can I just say, your arms and legs are amazing! so strong. and that strength is beautiful!
When I was in junior high/earrrly high school, my mom, step-dad and I would go to the drive-in about an hour from our house about once a month. I was the only child left at home, and it was a good bonding experience for the three of us. I have some very good memories from the drive-in… and some good stories from my mom’s childhood about the drive-in as well. Glad you enjoyed it!
I don’t know of any drive in movie places in the entire country, but would love to go to one!
Inception seems to be a rather polarising move (kind of like Avatar). I haven’t seen it yet.
I’m so jealous!! I’ve always wanted to go to a drive-in movie place but that’s kind of hard since I rely on closed captioning. Wish they were all captioned – maybe someday!
James has never been to the drive in either! And there’s one right by our house so we’ll definitely have to go this summer.
I went a lot in high school (much to the dismay of my parents I think. They disliked my boyfriends) and it is a lot of fun. But I too often fall asleep during the second movie. Too long!
I love the drive in! We have a few locally. My friends and I went a lot in high school and college but I havent been for a while. Im glad that you and Eric went and had a great time. It is hard to stay awake for the second one. I couldnt imagine having an hour and a half drive home. You all are troopers!
I remember going to a drive-in a few times when we were little. We’d all sit together in the back of the car and watch it lay down in the truck. We’d always see double features and the first was always a kids movie. Once it was over and the “grown-up” movie would start my brother and I would fall asleep in the front seats facing away from the screens. I remember having a lot of fun as a kid, and its too bad there aren’t too many of them left.
I really want to try a drive-in too, it always sounds like so much fun! but I seem to be living on the wrong continent for it, hm…
I used to love to go to the Drive-In, but the one in my city closed down
Boo!
