The Monday Meeting: Workplace Fashion (2)

First, the Monday Meeting posts will be a little more sporadic throughout the summer and not necessarily posting every Monday.

Welcome to the second installment of Workplace Fashion (see the first one here). This installment of the series has a theme: Work Dresses!

I personally LOVE wearing dresses to work in the summer. It’s too hot for pants, and a dress is just so easy to grab out of your closet in the morning and throw on. I’d say a dress is my go-to outfit in the summertime!

I’ll share my absolutely FAVOURITE work dress, first.

amber-outfit

My mom actually picked this dress out for me at Winners. I LOVE it. The material is so comfortable and it’s so easy to throw on in the morning. I also like that its kind of funky with the different colours and lines.

Here are the other fashion photos for this week! They are all fabulous.

Jamie

“When you work as a professional, you have to look well put together. When you look well put together I think people feel more confident in you and feel you are more organized, presentable and approachable. Confidence is key in the business world!

jamie-full-outfit1

Jamie works as a junior staff accountant at a public accounting firm. She got her dress from Suzy Shier, her necklace from Dynamite and her flats from Aldo.

Emily from Emily Jane

“I like dressing up and more formally and business like than I would usually – when else do I get to do it?? I’m also a big advocate of dressing for the job you want, not the job you have – when you look like you take your appearance seriously, I find people are more likely to take YOU seriously, too”

emily-full-outfit

Emily works in the pre-employment field providing assistance to people with gaining skills to find employment. She got her dress at Smart Set and the white shirt at Ricki’s.

Leigh from All You Need is Love

“While I was working for a temp agency, their motto for dressing for different placements was “no boobs, no butts, no belly” and I think that perfectly sums it up. A normal work dress week for me means dress pants, skirts or dresses. On Fridays we are allowed to wear jeans, which I take advantage of. If I wear jeans, I will wear a dressier top or jacket. There are people in my office who take advantage of the casualness of it by wearing sweatpants or yoga pants, which I do not find appropriate”

Leigh works in a union position. She got her dress from H&M and her shoes from Superstore – Joe brand.

Jolene from Everyday Foodie

“Fashion in the workplace should be professional, yet still reflect the personality of the person. I tend to dress more “bland” at work than I would on the weekends, but I jazz up my outfits with accessories”

Jolene is a teacher and she got her dress at Superstore – Joe Brand.

Paula from Insert My Blog Name Here

“My workplace fashion personally doesn’t vary too much from what I would wear outside of work most of the time. But my company isn’t very strict about dress code, so this is fine. I once got into trouble for showing my midriff but that was an accident (my top had rode up while I was walking.) I wouldn’t generally turn up at work wearing a crop top or a micromini without tights or anything like that – it’s just not me!

paula-full-outfit

Paula works at a non-profit and she got her dress online at www.asos.com.

Ashley from Ashley as Aurora

“Our dress code is “business casual” with Fridays being a “jeans and t-shirt” day. I work primarily with kids between the ages of 5-17 who have been removed from their homes by Child Protective Services, so I do a lot of play/art therapy. It can be tricky when choosing my outfit for the day because when I’m not working with the kids I spend most of my time completing paperwork, attending meetings and returning phone calls and emails. I try to balance a casual wardrobe (so it’s not a big deal if a kid spills paint all over me) with some more professional outfits when necessary.”

ashley-d-full-outfit

Ashley works as a counselor at a non-profit agency. She bought this dress and belt at Kohls for under $35!

Do you wear dresses to work? Why or why not? If you do, do you tend to wear colourful summer-y dresses or stick to more professional ones?

The next time I do a workplace fashion post the theme will be Casual Friday. If you want to participate, send me a pic of your favourite Casual Friday Outfit with the answers to the questions found here.

Oh this is fun- I can read the Monday Meeting post when I am going to bed on Sunday. I find time changes to be really entertaining- you’d think after spending 6 months in Australia this would no longer be the case, but no.

Anyway, I love this post and I absolutely love dresses for every occasion. My stomach hates when things are tight on it so dresses are perfect for it because they are never really tight in the stomach. I find dresses really comfy…except my wedding dress when the bustle broke and everyone was stepping on it haha but anyways. I love dresses for work and wear them constantly. I buy 99 percent of my work dresses at TJ Maxx (or my mom finds them for me). I wish I had all the stores mentioned in this post!

Oh, nice to people’s natural feeling

  3. Paula says:

Oooh, I really love Leigh’s dress – I want it!

I like the Casual Friday idea too!

  4. BostonRunner says:

I’ve never worn a dress to work partly because I don’t really have a work dress and partly because I don’t think I’m comfortable enough to wear one yet as an intern. I love the advice from Emily to dress for the job you want not what you have. I think what you wear to work is soo important in how people perceive & trust you.

  5. I don’t really wear dresses very often but when I see other ladies I always wish that I did. I never seem to find the sute styles that they have :(

  6. Kyla Roma says:

Very cute! And I took a picture but forgot to email it!! lol I’ll have to try again :)

  7. Heather C says:

Summer is definitely too hot for pants! I wear a Dress or Skirt probably 3/5 days of the week :) They’re so much more comfy! Love all of these!

  8. Shop Girl* says:

What a great idea for a post!

I don’t typically wear dresses to work, but I’d like to start. I spent the last year working in a special education contained classroom (I’m a teacher) and wearing a dress would have been difficult as it’s a very, very active job. I’m working as an occasional teacher now and I think dresses might work this year. :)

  9. ens says:

i LOVE all of these dresses – they’re so cute.. i actually just picked up two new comfy/work dresses this weekend :)

  10. mandy says:

I’m not really a dress kidna gal. I’ve never been. My office is business casual with an emphasis on the casual so most people just wear khaki’s and a polo or something like that.

  11. Megan says:

I love this! I like seeing what everyone else wears to work. I’m envious because I can’t wear dresses/skirts to work.

  12. I don’t wear dresses to work often, but when I do they have to be professional, and not revealing. As long as my skirt length is as long as or longer than my arm length when my arms are down (to fingertips) then the length is appropriate.

  13. I’m wearing a dress right now! :) I much prefer them to suits which is why I love them. Super easy to throw on and go.

    BTW your dress is hot!

  14. Emily Jane says:

Thanks for letting me take part in this! :)

  15. Leigh says:

I love this series of posts…it’s fun to see what other people wear to work. Thanks again for including me in it!

  16. Great post. I wanted to submit a dress, but just didn’t get around to any photo taking of work dresses I like. Anywho, love Jolene’s necklace (adds a funky punch to a basic dress) and I like your fav work dress as well!

I personally love dresses bc they’re so darn comfy. I prefer to wear summery/more casual dresses in the summer bc I tend to dress more summery then anyway at the office. However, I won’t wear all of my dresses to the office bc some are more fitting for a party or day at the park.

  17. Every time I try on a dress hoping to move it into a work rotation I can’t find anything that looks good on my short body!!! I don’t have any dresses that I’d wear to work, but plus it’s not really work friendly when I have to be on the floor all the time!!

  18. Stephany says:

Fun post! I don’t wear dresses a lot, because I haven’t found one that looks good with my frame. (They mostly just make me look pregnant.) I love Emily’s dress! Adorable! And completely agree with her sentiment of dressing for the job you want, not the job you have.

  19. nicole says:

I love love love summer dresses and wearing them in the summer! they make my mood so happy and cheerful!

  20. Caz says:

I love wearing dresses! I own quite a few and wear them to work with tights and flats or boots. I always meant to send you some photos but I am TERRIBLE at remembering a camera.

That being said, I totally wear yoga pants to work often. But it’s a little more acceptable when you work in sport! And I do make a point to dress up when we have meetings, clients coming in etc.

  21. Becky says:

Love this post – and I love wearing dresses to work. So easy to throw on (i.e. I can sleep in later) and you can look so put together!

  22. So many of these outfits are adorable – yet I’ve neve heard of many of these stores. Apparently I have some on-line shopping to get to! Fun feature Amber!

    • MissAmber says:

I just realized most of these bloggers are Canadian – Jamie, Leigh, Emily, Jolene and I are all Canadian so you probably don’t recognize them because they are Canadian stores :)

  23. Jessica says:

First, I really love your dress. Gorgeous! And would look good with black tights too. I love Leigh’s dress. I need to start checking out some non-traditional stores because these are all adorable. I always go to the same place!

  24. All those dresses are so cute! I wish I would have gotten my act together and sent you a picture. I wear dresses about 2-3 times/week! Def my fave thing to wear. it has just been too hot to wear pants here this summer!!

  25. Amanda says:

I don’t think I’ve ever worn a dress to work. I haven’t found any I really love and it’s just not really the “style” in my office. I think the only outfit I would be able to “get away with” at my job is Emily’s.

  26. Nora says:

You look AMAZING in that dress. I’d kill to have legs like yours!!! And that dress is just so cute! Actually, everyone looks great in their dresses. What a fun mix! I don’t have a lot of dresses that I wear to work for two reasons: 1) I love wearing dresses for fun, outside of work, and I don’t like to associate my dresses with work and 2) I work in a fairly male-dominated field so it’s tough to wear dresses and not feel like they are all staring, even if they aren’t really staring (does that make sense!?).

I might have a fun outfit to share for casual Friday if you want!

  28. What a great feature, Amber! Your Monday Meeting posts are always so informative! This one is inspiring me to take a little bit more time in the mornings getting ready for work. Let’s see if that happens :P Your dress is very cool — so mod! You are rocking it!

  29. Ashley says:

I love all of these. I pretty much never wear dresses anywhere, but I plan to change that eventually.

  30. Mel says:

I don’t agree that Jamie’s outfit is very work appropriate….for any office or for an accounting firm. Unless of course she wears a modest sweater over it. I’m not a prude or judging, just saying that it looks a little too much what I’d wear out to dinner than to work. The bare shoulders is way too much!

    Cute dress though.

  31. shoshanah says:

I love all these dresses, but I tend not to wear a lot of dresses especially to work. Mainly because I don’t own a lot of dresses that are very work appropriated. I love wearing them, I just never think to buy them when I’m out shopping.

  32. Liz says:

What a great idea for a post! I love this so much because personal style in a corporate environment is so important but sometimes hard to do. It’s awesome to see what other 20-somthings are wearing to work!

  33. Lauren says:

I would love it if you continued to do these each week! I’m really, really surprised by how casual some of these are! I could never wear a dress without sleeves and everything has to hit at the knee. Pantyhose and close-toed shoes are required too! I’m JEALOUS of these fun, summer dresses. I want to wear something short and cute, dangit!
