The Feet Want What They Want

by MissAmber on July 20, 2010 · 26 comments

in marathon training, running

Unfortunately, what my feet want are the Asics Gel-Kayano’s. One of the most expensive pairs of shoes out there.

Ya’ll might remember what happened last time I tried to get these shoes for a good deal?

The increasing irritation in my shin bone was telling me that I needed a new pair of shoes asap. And, I was kind of thinking that I might be risky and buy a new brand. Ya know, a cheaper brand. So on Sunday afternoon I ventured to the running store to see if I could find a pair of shoes that my feet loved just as much as the beloved Asics, for a little less of a heartbreaking price.

But, after getting no help from the sales guy who obviously just wanted me to buy the most expensive shoes, I decided to just go with the Kayano’s again. I mean, if it ain’t broken, don’t fix it right?

And then I saw the sign.

Buy one pair of shoes, get one pair 1/2 off.

And that my friends is how I managed to spend just a little less than half a months rent on two pairs of shoes.

I’m really hoping that these new shoes help with the shin pain I’m having in my left shin. It’s a pretty regular thing that is off-and-on throughout the workout. And, yes, I went to the doctor and got x-rays and there’s nothing wrong with it that came up in the x-rays. So for now I’m foam rolling and icing like it’s my job.

The new plan is working out so well. Running four days a week is much easier on my body than the five days a week I was running before. Last week was a down week so I only logged 24 miles and this week I jump up to 34 miles. I’m going to go “easy” for ALL my runs this week. Both to break in the new shoes and to not make it to hard on my body with such a big mileage jump. I will likely be doing 9:1 for all my runs this week.

I still love training, by the way :)

What brand of running shoes do you wear?

Woo hoo, what a deal! I used to hate getting new running sneakers but now I love it. I just realized that our fall marathons are on the same day!

Oh those shoes are gorgeous! I run in Asiacs GT-2150, they treat me well. Glad to hear you’re doing better with running 4 times a week than 5. I found that cutting out that one run a week helped soo much.

I love Asics except that they are narrow and my arch doesn’t agree. Now I am wearing Mizunos and they are pretty kick ass!

Good job scoring that deal!

Nice work on the sale! Inevitably, you’ll need them, so why not have the extra pair? :)

I love my sauconys! And I think the price is justified- if it keeps you from paying medical bills, you’re better off…

I used to wear the Kayanos but completely changed (for the wayyyyyy better) to the Nike LunarGlides. I used to have such sore tired feet at the end of a long run but not anymore.
Good luck and hope your shins heal up.

I am glad you got one pair half off! At least you won’t have to buy shoes for quite awhile.

As you know, I run in Mizunos. I am very lucky because they are very inexpensive. They are $100 but I always get 20-30% off at my running store since I am in their customer database (oh how I love my running store!)

I hope the new shoes help with the shin pain. That is not fun!!

I have New Balances, but I don’t run in them often. They’re probably what I’ll buy when I start running, though. They’re lightweight and comfy!

Sweet kicks!

Hey…I was just listening to the latest TwoFitChicks podcast last night and they had a running expert on taking questions from listeners. One of the first questions was about shin splints, and the expert said that it’s the shin-muscle’s job to pull the toes up with every stride and that shin splints are often a result of striking too much on the heel, making the shin muscles work too hard. Her recommendations were to modify the running stride to strike the ground more in the middle of the foot so the shin muscles are less taxed. Here’s the link to the show in case you’re interested: http://www.twofitchicks.org/2010/07/episode-15-running-further-with-julia-jones.html . Perhaps you knew this stuff already…??? but my husband has shin pain too so he’s going to try it out. Fingers crossed!

I loooove my mizunos. When I started running and first bought them like 4+ years ago they were a reasonable $80-ish dollars. Now they cost me something like $115 or $120. It makes me want to cry. But I love them so much and they really work for me. So I stick with what works.

I usually wear asics but I am considering switching to Brooks and seeing how it goes. I just have had trouble with the lower end womens asics so i want to try something new but I am nervous about switching.

Yikes, quite the pricetag but you have to remember that it’s better to invest in preventative measures than spend when things get too bad - hopefully these will help with your shins! Good luck :)

I love my Asics - they do make all the difference to my shoddy shin splints. Yeow! And hopefully they’ll last you the distance too. I spent way more on a pair of running/support Nikes and they are NOWHERE near as comfy!

I wear Adidas Supernovas. They are good enough for the amount of running I do - LOL!

My hubby always says that expensive shoes are worth it … even when we are talking designer heels!! I love that about him :-) It is good to get whatever your feet need - they will thank you!

I think you made the right choice. Your feet and bod will thank you. I currently wear Nike Structure Triax’s and Brooks Adrenaline. Am also contemplating buying the vibrams just to use occasionally on little jogs down the block and getting my feet stronger.

I’d think of it like this, #1 even though it’s half a month’s rent- two pairs of shoes will last you well beyond a month and #2 good shoes are probably third in money priority order after rent and food, you need to keep your sanity!
Glad the 4 days of running is helping!

My current pair are Saucony ProGrid Ride 2. They were fitted for me, and I like them so far. But I’ve never had any trouble with injuries in my life!

Hey, you’ve got to make sure you take care of your feet/legs/bones! I know it’s expensive; mine were crazy expensie too. I don’t think I’ve even bought a pair of designer heels before but running shoes I certainly have! Glad to hear that there is nothing visibly wrong with the shin; hope the pain goes away!

Right now, I wear Asics. And I’m in the market for new shoes, since they’re falling apart & causing me shin pain every once in a while. I plan on going to a running store and having them test me for the right shoes because my feet are just plain WEIRD and need specialized help. ;)

Pricey shoes, yes, but so important for your training and health.

I wore Asics for years but I’m now a Brooks convert. The only reason that I changed was that I had my stride analyzed and Asics neutral shoe, the one that was supposedly best for me, didn’t feel that great. With the marathon coming up I decided to trust the professionals and went with their recommedation with the Brooks. A great deal more $ than my old Asics, but worth it, I think.

Yay for new shoes! And at a deal like that, you had to get them. I don’t really have a specific running shoe type but Fleet Feet told me New Balance is what works best for me. Now to start saving!

I am an Asics girl through and through. I’ve tried others and I always end up back with the Asics. With my orthotics, I’ve been using the Asics Gel Cumulis (spelling??) faithfully, and I have very happy feet as a result. Yeah, running ain’t cheap, but I always see some new top or runner or something that I “must” have.
I may not run fast, but darn it, I look good!!
Keep up the training. It does pay off (I went from ‘5:45 to finish’ to a ‘5:00 hr’ pace in one clinic).

I used to run in the Asics Nimbus, but on my long runs, I had the WORST knee pain. So, I took my shoes to the running store and tested out 3 different pairs. Asics, were okay. Brooks, I didn’t care for and saucony I loved. They have a wider toe box which I was surprised I liked so much.

Glad your new 4 days a week is working out well for you! I hope your shin splint gets better soon.

I’ve been 100% Nike for ~1.5 years now - I don’t always get the same *shoe* (though I try, but they change things around!), but I love their stuff.

4 days per week is how I roll, too! :) I hope the shoes + new schedule are working out!
