Confessions

One of my favourite bloggers and good friends, Nora, does a confessions series. I’ve always wanted to join in so today I am!

  • Yesterday morning I had the worst run I’ve had yet in 8 weeks of marathon training. I got home from the run and was thisclose to pouring myself a glass of wine. At 7:00 AM.
  • I’m terribly jealous of all the blogger meet-ups that have happened and are happening this summer but I’m also wildly excited to meet Lisa and Lauren in October!
  • I’ve been really lonely for the last few weeks.
  • I like Tim Hortons iced lattes better than Starbucks. Gasp!
  • My feet are even more gross now then they were in this picture. My feet are so gross they gross ME out. What do I do about the dead skin at the ends of my toes from running? I’m too embarrassed to get a pedicure.
  • I’m dreading my massage next week. That’s right, I said I’m dreading a massage. Why you ask? Because it’s not a relaxation massage, it’s a sports massage focused entirely on my legs for 30 minutes. More specifically, massaging out all the knots and muscle tightness from running. It’s going to hurt.
  • You know that old saying that men think about sex every six seconds or something silly? That’s what I feel like with the marathon. All I think about is the marathon/marathon training/running. Training has taken over my physical and mental life.
  • Eric gets here Sunday night. I have never been more excited to see someone in my life but I’m also kind of dreading sharing a bed in our shoebox apartment. Our shoebox apartment with no air conditioning. I already wake up soaked in sweat every night when it’s just me and Webster in the bed. I think it’s time to bring out the big guns, i.e. the window air conditioner!

What are your confessions today?

I’m jealous of blogger meet-ups as well! I feel like I’m the only Florida blogger. ;)

I don’t know if you’ve tried any remedies for your toes, but my mom deals with the same issues and puts Vicks VapoRub on her toes before bed and then sleeps in socks and it does help. She’s still dealing with her toes falling off but it doesn’t look half as bad as before. (It’s some old wives remedy that her doctor recommended.)

  2. I love that you mention your feet. Mine are pretty bad too. Blisters, scars from old blisters, worn heels…just bad! I had a pedicure for the first time last week and kept apologizing and trying to explain to the poor lady that I run and thats why they look like that. I don’t think she got it..or cared quite frankly lol.

  3. Kyla Roma says:

Aw, don’t be embarrassed about your feet! You can always get yourself a little at home pedicure kit from the drug store – buy a foot scrub and a pumice stone & they’ll take care of the dead skin :)

It’s so exciting that Eric is coming so soon! and I can’t believe that you haven’t been using your air conditioner!!! Get that taken care of lady, there’s no need to swelter!

    • Megan says:

I agree with Kyla. I can’t imagine not having air conditioner. (It reaches to above 100 F where I live, though. Not sure how hot it gets there.) Hopefully you can use the window unit to cool things down at night! SO excited that Eric will be with you again soon!

  4. Paula says:

I love blogger meet-ups, even though I only started meeting people this year. It gets addictive!

As for my confession . . . um, some people I follow on twitter really irritate me and sometimes I feel like punching them. Yet I don’t stop following them. So I must LIKE to feel like that…

  5. Megan says:

Definitely a pumice stone! Soak your feet in hot water (this might be a relaxing option after running, anyway, and you can find pedicure kits with something to add to the water that will soften up your feet), then use the pumice stone to get rid of the dead/dry skin. I use a pumice stone every so often while in the shower, and it helps. I’ve also heard of putting some sort of moisturizer on your feet and wearing thick socks (that will lock in the moisture) … But that might be an uncomfortable option without the air conditioner. Once you feel more comfortable with how your feet look (but believe me, they’ve seen the worst, and I definitely don’t think your feet are “the worst”), treat yourself to a professional pedicures every so often. They’re very relaxing!

A friend of mine went to Canada recently, and I believe she said she went to Tim Hortons and that it was way better than Starbucks.

  6. I’d compare my feet with yours, but generally feet gross me out and I have a hard time even looking at pics of them… lol But yeah- my feet are nasty. Like I’m cutting off chunks of skin and can’t feel it at all nasty. Ugh… I’m considering a pedi after my half marathon- but that’s only if I decide not to start training for something else! The poor toes…

  7. Jess says:

Oh yea it’s wayyy too hot without AC this summer.

And running makes my feet pretty gross too. I paint my own toenails so I don’t have to subject someone to that.

  8. Becky says:

Oh my gosh with no AC! Get on that stat lady!!! Nothing really to confess today, except I keep thinking about how wouldn’t it be nice to be able to stay at home all day and blog and get paid for it and have insurance? (So, if anyone out there wants to hook me up with that, just let me know!)

  9. ens says:

get one of those buffers and a good foot cream! If you use it when you get out of the shower your feet will be purty in no time :)

  10. I don’t even look down anymore, my feet are so gross. But then, they were never really cute to begin with. I just kind of wish these two hanging on toenails would fall off already.
And coincidentally I had MY worst run yesterday, too! It was just 5 miles but I was struggling – hot, humid, blood sugar dropping, ugh. Not one fun second.

  11. lisa says:

i’m envious of blogger meetups too. i get so close (travel to same city) but usually travelling with my family and it doesn’t work out

  12. mandy says:

I’m excited for Eric to be with you! And to echo some of the other commenters, definitely get a little pumice stone and some moisturizer. It helps. Also if you don’t want to pay for a full spa pedicure, check out cosmotology programs near to your home, most programs offer services like mani/pedis — the students need practice and its a fraction of the price. You are going to have an awesome time with Lisa and Lauren in October!! It will be here before you know it.!

  13. Kathleen says:

I say go for it and get a pedicure! Since I play soccer and apparently have really weak toenails, my big toes are almost always some shade of black due to bruising. Yeah they give me funny looks but when I explain to them what happened they totally understand! It’s worth it, trust me. :)

I’m really excited about Eric coming home, and I’m sure it’ll work out! My advice is to talk about your expectations, and maybe make some ground rules. Plan on alone time. Even though my husband and I have a 2400 square-foot house and right now he’s confined to his recliner, we are still getting on each other’s nerves at times since we have to be around each other 24/7. I think I might need to find a husband-sitter for awhile. :)

  14. Nora says:

Your comment about sex vs marathon training thinking cracked me up, so thank you for that =)

Today I’d like to confess that I’ve never been more excited to be done with a class in my life. Also that I haven’t worked out in two weeeks and not only do I feel gross, I feel like I look gross (okay, that’s more of a whine than a confession, but still true!).

Yes, get that A/C unit in your place stat!

  15. J says:

In college, the trainers area used to have this file thing that we could use to scrap down the dead skin on our feet. I think they would prolly have something like that at the grocery store or drug store, so maybe try and find one of those to help your feel look better!

  16. abbi says:

I’m right there with you on the whole thinking about the marathon is all I think about thing…it’s kind of insane at this point!

  17. H-woman says:

Training for a marathon will consume your life. All you do is eat, sleep, work and train. But crossing the finish line is sooooo worth it!

I say DON’T go for a pedicure. Do it at home. In a salon they always take off all the calluses and then running hurts. Do your socks fit? I have one pair of socks that is just a wee bit smaller than the others and they rub a bit at the end of my toes….they have been removed from the sock rotation. Also, make nice with a foam roller. It’ll make your visit with the massage therapist at least sort of bearable.

    =)

  18. You know, there are all kinds of objectives to marathon training. The obvious one is to train your body for endurance running. The gradual increase of miles from one week to the next does that. But, there are other things that are equally as important as endurance training. For example, it’s your time to figure out which clothes and shoes you want to wear on race day. You test out lots of different things before figuring out which ones work best for you. You test out what you eat that morning and what form of replacement energy you’ll use during the race. Again, there’s probably some trial and error here. Not everything works and that’s ok – it’s better to have mini failures during your training rather than on race day. And the same holds true for running itself. It’s important to have bad runs … it serves as training for your body and mind to figure out ways to persevere and push through. So, don’t knock yourself – you did it on a tough day and that’s a huge accomplishment!

  19. Jaime Runs says:

I’m right there with you with the obsessive running thoughts. Nonstop. All. The. Time. Especially now that I can’t run — it’s even worse.

  20. Margarita says:

LOL! You’re not the only one who adores Tim’s iced lattes – not me! My sister! We grew up in Hamilton (which is where timmies originated) so I am ultimately sick of the place and refuse to visit it in Vancouver (where I live now). But she still loves their iced thingies. lol.

  21. My foot has been hurting for 12 days and I still haven’t gone to the doctor because I am scared the doctor is going to make me where a tensor or something, and I just don’t wanna. I am hoping that if I ignore it, it will get better on its own.

  22. Emily Jane says:

Every time I read one of these confessions posts (which are always so interesting to read!) I get the Glee mashup of “It’s My Life” and “Confessions” stuck in my head :)

So exciting Eric is coming home soon, and I’m excited for you to meet Lisa!

  23. I love confession posts too. I always think of one or two things I want to confess but never manage to get a good list together. I think you should do this regularly – to me it makes bloggers seem more human. :)

  24. Ashley says:

So glad Eric is almost there!

  25. Tammy says:

HA!!! Oh Amber, training over sex… what are you doing to do when Eric gets there…? Focus-focus!!

    My confessions are:
    - I am super excited to leave on our holidays 3 days!!
    - I procrastinated getting my banking stuff last night, thinking I would get up early and do it… yeah like that happened…nope.
    - I am addicted to humus! Can’t not have it in my fridge… I even started making my own, I love it that much.

I think that is all for confessions today. I am sure I will have more for the next post!

    ;)
    Tam.

  26. Heather C says:

Training/Marathoning will take over your mind until race day! Comes with the territory,, but soon you’ll love it ;)

    -I hate packing.
-I’m a little scared to say “good byes”, because I am no good at them.
-I can NOT wait to live by the mountains, but hope my lungs adjust as quickly as I do. ;)

  27. Ah, yes the blogger meet ups…so many going on in DC and midwest it seems. Can’t WAIT to meet you and Lisa! Also, trust me on the pedicure…just get one. Every time I go I apologize to the person for how terrible my feet look because I run marathons. And I also ask them to not take off all the callus bc my poor feet need them.

Ooh, I feel ya on the massages. I almost always ask for deep tissue (like the few times a year I get them) and it is so painful. Everyone says “oh have fun at the massage, that will be sooo relaxing.” Um, no, it’s not. Just breathe through the pain. Also, a tid bit to note, be sure you don’t have any workouts or stressful events going on the rest of the day. It’s good for your bod to just soak up all that treatment it received. Occasionally, I’ll even pop into starbucks for 20 min after a massage rather than jetting back to the office bc I know my mind and body just need a few min to decompress.

It also seems like we’ve both had some pretty TERRIBLE runs lately. Whew. It will get better. It must.

  28. hmm work has made me want to drink at 7 am many times

  29. Vanessa says:

You’re not supposed to drink wine at 7 a.m.? I call shenanigans.

    ;)

  30. Ha. Laughed about the thinking about marathons every 6 seconds. It’s pretty much become an obsession for both of us. :) I have a funny story about that which I will be blogging about next week…

Confession: I said I wasn’t goign to drinjk when i was training for the marathon. Truth of the matter is, I have drank more since i started marathon training. I blame the beautiful summer weather. I just feel like I can’t NOT have a cocktail when out w/ friends on a patio…

  31. Kelly says:

Haha, I think a marathon is not a bad thing to be obsessed with thinking about, right?
A sports massage sounds crazy, I am not jealous of that at all!

  32. Vino at 7am? Can’t think of anything better. Well, add some ice cream in the mix and I’m in my personal heaven. And oh my gosh, I have to try Tim Horton’s coffee now—one just opened in my hood!

  33. nicole says:

I hate waking up sweaty!!! I can’t imagine no ac in this crazy heat!!! I feel bad for you!! As for the feet just get a Pedicure… who cares if people think ur feet are gross. It’s their job and its cuz u run so much!! People usually feel bad for my feet and then they don’t mind the way they look!!! Plus its prolly not that bad anddd lastly treat urself to Pedicures now and then.. ur feet deserve some love too!!! :-)

  34. Yeah, I’ve given up on having pretty feet. I keep my nails painted and I use lotion and I try to shave off the callouses, but it’s bad.

Sorry about the massage, but think about how AMAZING you are going to feel after!

  35. Caz says:

I confess that sometimes I think about drinking wine at 7:00am too…

I also confess that I miss Tim Horton’s so much…

I thirdly confess I wish I could come visit you in Kamloops this time I’m in Canada :-(

  36. Mom says:

My confession is that I miss you more than I ever let you know.

And I’m not too excited that you want to drink wine at 7:00 AM. :-P

Love you, and very proud of you!!!!

  37. steph anne says:

YAY, a new chapter soon will begin with Eric! I’d love to get a massage…want to trade places? :)

  38. *pshhh* screw embrassment, I bet your feet arent the worst they’ve seen go get yourself a pedi! Plus you don’t know them, and if you drive to the salon further away you can avoid them by not going back to that nail salon again. ;-)

  39. Anais says:

It’s so exciting to see how far along your marathon training is going!! I’m totally living vicariously through you and Lisa! :) I’m going to try running for the first time since May on Tuesday and it’s making me very excited! Can’t wait to have gross and callused feet again ;)
