Where I’ve been
Whoopsie. Kind of disappeared on ya’ll didn’t I?! You’re probably wondering where I’ve been – well, I won’t lie to you – I’ve been in bed with strep throat.
FUN!
Starting Sunday evening and finally letting up a smidge yesterday I have been burning up with a fever every 4-5 hours, had massive headaches and barely been able to swallow thanks to a sore throat. I guess this is my body’s way of telling me that it’s TIRED and wants to REST?
Whatever, body, just get it out of the way before marathon training starts.
After visiting the doctor on Tuesday and being prescribed some antibiotics I’m slowly on the mend, physically anyways, but after spending three days literally lying in bed I’m finding it hard to get the mental motivation to do anything, including blogging.
I had to call in sick to work yesterday and Tuesday because I just felt too crappy to even get ready for work nevermind drive myself there and actually do work. I’m *hoping* to make it through at least a half-day of work today. I need to get my schedule back on track again!
Next week my family is coming for my convocation (I am SO EXCITED to see Webster) so it’ll only be a three-day work week for me and then a busy couple of days with family before they all (including Eric
) head back up north. The week after that marathon training officially starts and hopefully I’ll be getting my life and schedule back on track again!
On another note, I am STILL bike shopping and I’ve basically given up all hope of finding a decent used bike online within my price range so I’m thinking of just buying one from Canadian Tire. I’m not sure what the American equivalent of this would be, Target maybe?!
Anyways, do you guys think it would be OK to get my first road bike from Canadian Tire? Obviously there not the greatest quality but there in my price range and I don’t even know if I’ll really like the sport or get into triathlons. I really just want to be able to get some good cross-training in this summer.
Alright this post is all over the place and I’m seriously lacking in concentration and focus so that’s it for now!

I hope you feel better soon!
Oh strep throat is the worst! Glad you’re starting to feel a little better though! My mom always told me to gargle with warm salt water because “germs can’t live in a salene solution.” Maybe that’ll help?
I hope you’re feeling better soon! I hate getting taken out for a few days with something like that… ugh!
I’m sorry you’ve been sick, I’ve Had it too and it sucks!!! Hope u get better soon!!
I’m sorry you’ve been sick, I’ve Had it too and it sucks!!! Hope u get better soon!!
Aww, feel better soon!
Feel better, Amber!!
Hope you feel better soon, I would keep checking for used road bikes try the MEC community sales section of their website and pinkbike along with the usual sites! Also look around for last years models and stuff at bike stores
You definitely should try and get a better quality bike with decent components it will make riding much more enjoyable and you will be less prone to bike issues and you won’t want to upgrade right away!
Boo, sorry to hear you’ve been so sick! I don’t really have any ideas about the bike – especially in Canada. I was recently in the same boat, but managed to convince my mom to let me babysit her bike. I know there was a pawn shop up the road from me that has bikes from time to time, and also Craigslist was an awesome resource but I don’t know if they have a Canadian sector. Maybe try Goodwill? I see excercise equipment at mine all the time. Good luck!
Oh no, sorry to hear that you have strep throat. I have had that a lot and it’s never any fun! Hope you feel better soon!
I’m sick too with bronchitis. UGH. I’ve been down for almost a week. Coughed so hard I strained a chest muscle. UGH.
As far as bikes? I ironically bought my most recent one at Target. I don’t ride a ton and 99.9% of the time I’m riding on the road. I REALLY needed a new bike but I didn’t have $500+ for a NICE bike, you know?
Get well soon! I always get sick when I go away, anything ranging from a tummy bug to full blown glandular fever, so I can appreciate just how crappy you must be feeling. Good luck getting back to work!
And I can’t believe that you haven’t seen Webster yet! Oh my God, girl! You must be missing him like crazy!
I’m sorry to hear that you’ve been sick. I hope you start to feel better soon. And as for the bike, I think if it’s your first one and you’re just testing it out to see if you even like it that it’s smarter to get a cheaper bike. If you decide you love biking and tris and eventually want to upgrade to something nicer, you can do that later. It seems silly to shell out a bunch of extra money for something if you aren’t sure you’re going to like it.
Of course you go away on a fabulous vacation and come home only to get sick. I’m pretty sure there’s a secret bacteria that attacks everyone ending vacation. Sigh. I hope you feel better soon. And as far as the bike goes – get something that’s going to get you outside. Test ride it before buying, if you can. Make sure it’s not too heavy. And don’t worry so much about what kind of bike it is – so long as you think you’ll ride it, you likely will.
Ugh, sorry you’ve been sick. I used to get strep all the time until I got my tonsils out — it’s definitely more than just a sore throat, it can wipe you out. Hope you feel better soon!
Strep throat sucks. And if I was one of your co-workers and you came to work sick with it, I would send you home, so it’s a good thing you stayed home! Make sure you finish all the antibiotics!
As for the bike, it depends (classic yoga teacher answer, I’m told). If you’ve never had one and don’t know if you even really like biking, you can probably get a fairly good one at CT. If you kind of know what you want, I’d say cough up the extra dough up-front. One bad thing about buying a bike at CT–you won’t get to form any kind of relationship with the folks at the local bike shop (i.e. other cyclists who can: help you with servicing your bike, buying accessories, adjusting seat and pedals, letting you in on the coolest places in town to bike). OK, maybe I do have an opinion: go to the local bike shop and tell them you want a basic bike. Who knows, they might have one in their garage they’ll sell ya!
Feel better soon,
H =)
I think Canadian Tire would be an Okay start for a road bike. Just think – later on when you buy a better one, it will be such a step up and feel amazing
hope you feel better soon! Every time i go on a run lately (even dinky short ones) I feel a twinge or pain in my knee, hamstring, hip, etc. Freaks me out for marathon training. This body BETTER BE READY! Rest up and you’ll be back soon enough.
On the bike sitch, I think that whatever is in your budget is the way to go. Finding a good used bike that fits you is tough to do. Buy a cheap road bike and then use it for a while and see what you think. After all, in a few years when you start having more money available (cross your fingers), you can always upgrade if you want.
Strep throat? Ugh!
Doesn’t that stuff leave you feeling completely exhausted all the time?
Feel better – really really soon!
And on the bike front . . . I got mine from Costco. It’s cheap but it’s adequate enough for me. I’m not harcore enough for anything else!
SO sorry you’ve been feeling so bad all week- your body must have been totally drained from all your traveling!
I think its fine to get a cheap bike first and see how you like it.
I always seem to get sick when i get back from a big trip like your Europe one. It’s like your body just can’t handle it anymore and your immue system breaks down or something!
I think it’s really good that marathon training starts right after Eric & all of your family leaves. it will give you something to focus on when they leave. I love marathon training, but it definitely is a time hog – and in your case, that will probably be good for you, you know? Esp as you adjust to not having Eric there with you. You can always bbm if you are down & need someone to talk to!
Oh no! Strep throat is SO awful!!!! The pain is just unbearable – I really feel for you girl! I hope you are starting to feel better.
Hope you are feeling better!
Nooooo get rid of that strep!! I wish I could send soup your way
That sucks to hear that you’ve been sick. I’m sending some good vibes your way and hopefully you’ll be good as new in no time!
Aww sorry to hear you’re not feeling well! I hope you get better and the antibiotics help!
sorry you’re so sick! i hate strep throat. Get well soon! can’t wait to hear about your Convocation!
Good use of the word y’all there A! You make this Texas girl proud!
