Weekend Warrior? Apparently.

in Hot Yoga Challenge, Kamloops, healthy living, running, trail running, weekend

This weekend consisted of 4 hours of yoga and 2 hours of running. Apparently I’ve turned into a weekend warrior!

On Saturday I hit up the Hot Yoga studio in the morning for Day #3 of the Hot Yoga Challenge, which is going very well by the way! I can’t believe I’ve done five days of Hot Yoga straight already. I have to say, I’m loving it! Look for a full update on the challenge on Thursday.

Anyways, after Hot Yoga I rushed home, showered, choked back a green smoothie and picked up my friend Heather for an hour-long free yoga class at another local studio. They were doing a Yogathon by donation so we thought we’d check it out. It was a very laid back relaxing class so that was nice for a change!

Sunday was the doozie of a day. I started out the morning with a 10.75 mile run on the trails. Why I thought this would be a good idea after not running more then 6 miles in weeks was beyond me. It was on one of my favourite trails though, the one I face-planted on last summer. Remember that? Stupid rocks jumping out of nowhere..

(Picture from last summer)

Surprisingly enough I wasn’t even sore the next day (must be the yoga ;) ) We took it easy and the run took us just over two hours. By the end the bottom of my feet were feeling really beat up from all the rocks and sticks on the trail. I think I may need to invest in some trail shoes. Hmmmmm..

Anyways, after spending two hours running Sunday morning and devouring Eggs Benedict for lunch that afternoon I then went to Day #4 of Hot Yoga! So I worked out for a total of 3.5 hours on Sunday. Yikes! So does that make me a weekend warrior?

Oh, and while the shin pain that was ailing me last week is pretty much gone (YAY!) I seem to have another problem: Chafing.

I wore my new Nike Tempo Track shorts on the run on Sunday morning and then slothered my legs in Vaseline. While the shorts worked better than my other Nike shorts (where I chafe after 3-measly-miles) after almost 11 miles my legs weren’t having it anymore and started rubbing together.

Behold my inner thigh (this photo doesn’t do it justice - it’s much more red than that):

chafed-thighaspx

Ouch!

What’s a girl to do? With the heat in Kamloops and marathon training fast approaching (June 7!!) I can’t survive the summer without running in shorts. But my legs chafe SO bad. And, yes, I’ve tried body glide. It doesn’t hold out for the long runs!

Suggestions please?

Wow, you are impressive. I’m so glad you are sticking with this yoga challenge- I feel like I might be able to do it if you can…also it’s probably not in your head that it’s helping your shin. It is probably building up muscles around it and making you more flexible which takes extra pressure off the shin.

I’m not sure what to say about chafing- what if you bought longer shorts- like the yoga ones…I know lululemon has them if you want to spend half your life savings but I’m sure other places have them. They go to your knees so you probably wouldn’t have thighs rubbing. Just a thought I’m no chafing expert.

Ooo I have major chafing problems on my legs and under my sports bras. I have two solutions that have worked for me: run with running capris or buy the Monistat Chafing Gel. It works wonders. It comes out as a gel, but goes on as a powder. I love it. I use it all the time in the summer when I am wearing skirts

Spandex! I wear either shorts or capris that just cover my knees and its the only thing that works for me. Since they are tight to the skin, no problem with chafing.

Ouch…. Body glide helps me so I have no other suggestions. :( I hope you figure something out because chafing is just so painful!

And yes, you are definitely a weekend warrior! You got in some awesome work outs this weekend. Super impressed. Mine are measly compared to yours!!

owie. that’s just not good.

if body glide doesn’t help, then you probably need a change in wardrobe and try something like lightweight capris tights :-(

yes a weekend warrior! that’s why i haven’t switched to shorts yet - but I did buy a pair. that’s why i haven’t bought any prior to this cuz chafing is an issue.. I do usually use body glide. once i used aquaphor, that worked good. also the monistat chafing gel also works nicely too . longer shorts are definitely key - but you have to make sure they don’t ride up…

off the point — when you go to europe - do you plan on running in different cities? =)

I’m bringing my running shoes for sure because we’ll be doing A LOT of walking. But I’m not going to “plan to run”! We’ll see what happens though and if the urge hits I’m sure I will :)

I won’t wear anything with shorts for anything under 10km for that very reason. They have to come down to my knee. Maybe try something more fitted vs. loose like cycling or tri shorts to avoid the rub & creep up.

Girl, you’re awesome. I worked out a total of 3 hours this weekend between yard work, gym & weights but no 10.75 mile run for me (having knee issues… going to doc this Thursday… boo!). I sadly have no helpful advice or suggestions on how to prevent the chafing. That sounds terrible & looks painful :(

Look at you go! You definitely are a weekend warrior! Not sure where you get your motivation from, but can I have some?!

Ouch. I kind of feel sore after reading this. I don’t think I’ll ever reach your fitness level.

Try getting some tight shorts, the kind that say “compression”. My dad ran long distance in college and back then (the dark ages!) to prevent chaffing they used gel deodorant in a stick. He still swears by it, but you have to make sure you don’t buy anti-perspirant (which contains aluminum - not safe to slather heavy metals on your body for no reason). Usually you can find gel deodorant in the men’s section.

I see it’s been said already, but I suggest lululemon shorts or any other kind of tight Spandex-like shorts to prevent chaffing. (Not that I’m an expert)

lululemon’s stuff ships FOR FREE and when I ordered it got to me in 2 days!

I think if you look in the dictionary under “week-end warrior”, the definition is now “Amber”. Seriously girl, you rock!!! That is an intense week-end, but even better is that you had fun doing all of it :D

Well, fun, except for chafing. I wish I knew what to tell you but I haven’t yet chafed from working out *knock on wood*. I think you could probably find some lululemon crop that go right at the knee and would prevent chafing. Plus the new ones I got are SO light you don’t feel like you’re wearing anything… so I think it would be ok with the heat?

Chafing happens to me, too, so I *have* to wear longer shorts (they usually hit a few inches about my knees) because I can’t handle that pain! Longer shorts don’t bug me as much because I don’t like showing too much leg, lol, and the way shorter shorts ride up annoys me even more!

And yes, I live in Florida where the humidity makes a 70-degree day feel like 100-degrees. So I deal with the heat, haha. I usually wear a lighter shirt to make up for it!

Wow, you sure rule! How do you manage to stick to yoga without falling asleep though? :)

That totally sucks! You might want to just get some sort of spandex short. I know it sounds awful and constricting, but it would take away the chafe factor. The nike tempo shorts have a tendency to scratch me too. I’m thinking of buying some shorts spandies that aren’t TOO short for my summer runs. I use body glide for runs over 10 miles, especially when wearing shorts.

And PS-Yes, you’re a weekend freakin’ warrior! Impressive efforts, lady!

Ooof, that looks painful! have you tried running with spandex underneath?? Um, not sure if it would help, but maybe? or finding some Really thin/light capris??

on another note - you are DEFINITELY a weekend warrior. No doubt. ;)

Awesome job weekend warrior! That’s awesome that you’re keeping up with the hot yoga!
As for the chaffing, I don’t typically get it on my legs.. I do get it from my bra sometimes, but I don’t notice it until after a work out. Have you tried spandex? Or some of kind of shorts like that?

a) you’re my hero. seriously… I don’t know how you do it.
b) I echo the comments re: spandex. I bought my first pair a couple weeks ago after a SERIOUS chafing catastrophe. You can wear them under your “regular” shorts or by themselves. I am *not* a spandex shorts kind of girl, but it’s the only thing that has worked for me, so I gave up a bit of my vanity.

great workouts girlie!!! :) thats fabulous!!

i use body glide for my legs during the marathon… try that.. it may work better than vasceline… even though its supposed to do the same thing. some of my running friends have to run in longer shorts so their legs dont chafe… my one friend runs in capris… which will suck A LOT in the middle of summer… im not sure what else would work!!!

fingers crossed for you deary!

Speaking from experience, spandex shorts. I wear something slightly longer than a booty short under my running shorts and it helps a TON. You could try a running skirt too; they make some with spandex shorts underneath. Nice and cool and saves you from the chaffing mess!

Hi Amber,

Good lotion on your legs, and I am going to have to agree with the spandex.
I don’t know, does talcum (sp..?) Powder work?? Like off that episode of Friends where Ross has leather pants on and he is very warm, uses lotion, powder, then his date walks in and see’s it all over -> with his pants around his ankles!!! HAHAHAAH!!

Love ya!!

ps. Where do you get your strength and will power to work out all weekend?? (maybe if I omitted tequila that might help..)

xo.

Body Glide. Reapply as necessary. Or longer shorts (Lulu’s still shorts are my faves). I also have a brooks running skirt.

=)

See ya this weekend?

Yikes - I didn’t know shorts could chafe like that! What about running with the opposite type of shorts (like if you are running with loose shorts, try tight or vise versa).

I run with LuLu Lemon capris and they don’t chafe … that might be an option.

You are such a rock star! I’m not intense enough about running to have suggestions- but my initial thought would be a capri length light weight base layer, with shorts on top of that? Good luck!

Oh my god that looks painful! I hate the chafing of short seams. Why must women suffer as such on long runs? I hope that heals quickly!

I did a Hot Yoga session during the summer, bought a monthly pass, and then was no where to be found for the month. GAH. FAIL. But, your challenge makes me wonder if I should give it another go and commit to it again :) thoughts?

Yes, definitely try it again. I actually HATED Hot Yoga the two times I did it before but a different studio and practicing regular has made all the difference! I’m genuinely sad that tomorrow night is my last day in my week pass. Hot Yoga is just so expensive or I’d do it much more often!

I’m really enjoying the hot yoga and am glad you gave me a heads up about it.

PS. That running location looks really nice. Where is it?

34 Nikki April 21, 2010 at 4:38 PM

You are SO a Weekend Warrior! And that location is stunning! And chafing….GRR! I had a chafing issue on my 8 miler this weekend too. In my armpits. Seriously. Ow. That’s a first for me. By the end I was running holding my shirt away from my armpits. I’m so cool. Nike tempos don’t work for me. They ride up in my inner thighs and chafe. I’ve discovered compression shorts work a lot better than me. I get a 5-6″ inseam, so they’re not really booty shorts. Or capris…they work for me too but I want less fabric when it’s warmer out. (And I already have funky capri tan lines from running, I’d rather that tan line be higher up LOL)
