Tuesday Bullets

Hi readers! My mind is swarming so bullets it is.

  • As many of you may have seen on Facebook and Twitter, my blackberry was stolen at the movie theatre on Friday night. Yesterday, I went into Telus and got a loaner phone for a couple of weeks – a blackberry storm, touch-screen, HATE it.
  • Then last night Eric gets a text from a girl claiming she “found” my phone on the movie theatre bathroom floor. I’m really sure my $500 ADORABLE PINK BLACKBERRY just hung out on a movie theatre floor for THREE DAYS with no-one taking it. But, whatever, I’m meeting her this afternoon to get it back. Hopefully!
  • Being phone-less for the long weekend was actually good for me. It was nice to take a step back from technology and the suck that is my phone. I found myself *reaching* for it so many times it was pathetic.
  • I was also kind of pathetic this weekend. I did nothing. Well, I slept and ate a lot. That’s about it.
  • I went out Saturday night, drank an entire bottle of wine, danced my face off and ended the night with a giant burger and fries at 3:00 AM. It was much-needed and incredibly fun. Despite a massive hangover the following day I still managed to knock off a 10K run in 59:15 (9:30/mile) – speedy considering I drank an entire bottle of wine the night before.
  • Speaking of running, my left shin hurts all the time lately. And not just when I’m running, it hurts when I’m walking and it really hurts to jump on it. I’ve been icing it a lot. I don’t think this is a good thing, I’m kind of worried about it..

shin-splint

  • I have my first race of the season this weekend – a 10K in Oliver, B.C. I really hope my shin is better for it.
  • I went shopping yesterday and bought some pretty new summer dresses for Europe! Our hostels are also 50% booked. So excited!

  • I’m considering going tanning a few times before we leave. What do you think? I know tanning is SO BAD FOR ME but I’m seriously SO FREAKING PALE, take a look at my pasty-ass leg in that photo above. I don’t want to be all gross and pale in all my photos with my cute new dresses. Thoughts?
  • There’s only 19 more sleeps until that, by the way. OMG, 19 MORE SLEEPS. Wow, that is coming FAST.

How was your weekend?

Get a spray tan from a professional :)

My comment will be in bullets (haha you didn’t think I was going to leave a short comment right?)
-I hope that girl really has your phone…very sketchy! But at least you’ll hopefully get it back?
-yikes on the shin- after the race this weekend can you take a couple of weeks off running to heal it completely? Have you been running outside more lately? Caroline’s shin splints cause her problems when she runs outside…
    -I love the new dresses!
-I know how tempting tanning can be but I still wouldn’t do it…you could go the spray tan route…though I sort of have a theory that in a couple of years they’ll say that leads to cancer too, then again at this point- what doesn’t lead to cancer? Though I think tanning booths are probably worse than most other things you can do…

  3. Heather says:

oh no….It sounds like what happened to my shin. If it doesnt get any better, go to the doctor. I would hate for you to have a stress fracture too!

  4. H-woman says:

My physio told me that some pain/muscle discomfort after a run is fine, but if it hurts more than what’s normal recovery for you, you need to get it checked out! Go get an x-ray and and make sure there isn’t a stress fracture somewhere. Probably shin splints, but the best thing for them is R.I.C.E. which also means scaling back the miles. Sorry, probably not what you want to hear, but it’s better to rest now than be unable to finish a big race ’cause you’re hurt.

Hope the chick shows with the phone. It’s fun to turn ‘em off sometimes and just do whatever you want to!

Dresses are super cute! DON’T fake and bake! It’ll make you old before your time. I’m with the other poster, if you have to, go get a spray tan. Otherwise go proudly pasty and pale!

    H =)

  5. Shannon says:

I’d tan. Yes, it’s bad for you, but if you’re going to feel uncomfortable wearing the dresses and being pale (you’re words, not mine LOL) then I’d tan. Oh, and seriously, if it hurts really bad to walk on it (your shin) then, I’d see a doctor if you had time. I had 2 stress fractures in my shins (one in each leg) back in 2008 and it was not fun! Plus, you don’t want to run on it if it’s fractured.

  6. mandy says:

If you are comfortable tanning, then go for it. I go once every few weeks in the winter. I really hope this girl has your phone. Those dresses are uber cute. And yay for having some of your hostels booked!

  7. erin says:

    • fingers crossed the girl has your phone.
    • i’m pretty much on chill out with the drinking right now since i have 2 races coming up. the fact that you were able to drink a whole bottle of wine, and still pull out a 9:30 pace, WTH! i’m totally jealous!
    • my left shin’s been hurting too, but not to the point where i can’t walk on it. I think i’ll try to ice it later.
    • i know tanning’s bad. Fake tans are great…. i’ve done the booth before. though i think for my own wedding, i’m gonna fake and bake it cuz it’s my wedding…..i’m wearing dresses now — and i’m pale. usually i’m all about the self tanner!

  8. Morgan says:

Have you thought about getting a spray tan? That’s what I usually do before vacations/big events because I’m with you in the Pasty McPale club. When done properly (ask for a demonstration) you can pull it off without random patches and/or get the kind that they airbrush on you. It requires putting aside your dignity for the session BUT you have a nice even tan and they can even spray in definition in “problem” areas if you so choose. Thumbs up on the spray tan from this redhead.

  9. Cari says:

Spray tan. Or get that Jergens Natural Glow lotion. It won’t make you super tan, but you’ll be less pasty. I have redhead skin without the redhead hair :)

  11. Emily Jane says:

You can go tanning! I know it’s bad for you but I still do it… just not excessively. People tend to start asking if I’m feeling okay if I stop lol. Love the dresses, and your Saturday night sounds awesome!

  12. BostonRunner says:

Cute dresses! In my opinion, going tanning isn’t worth it. Pale is the new tan, haven’t you heard? : )
As for the shins, is the pain focused in one particular spot, or just all along your shins? As soon as the pain becomes localized it may be something to worry about (stress fracture?), but if it’s everywhere I’d say ice, stretch the calves, and try to stick to running on soft surfaces for now. Hope it feels better!!

    • MissAmber says:

It’s definitely focused in ONE area. About three inches up from my ankle on the side of my shin, I can always find the exact spot because it’s tender to push on…

  13. Holly says:

I love the dresses you picked out! My weekend was not as productive as I wanted it to be, but we DID finish the Baby’s room (FINALLY!) – well, except for wall decorations. I tanned about 5 times before our wedding (3 minutes/time in the stand-up tanning booth) – it gave me enough colour that I didn’t look completely lost against my white dress! I didn’t want to do much more than that! I always turn orange with self-tanners … blah.

  14. Samantha says:

The dresses you picked out are so cute! I just bought some new sundresses myself, and I wish I had somewhere as exciting as Europe to wear them to. (But I’m still excited to wear them nonetheless, yay for summer!)

If you’d like to get a little tanner, go tanning! I tan at a salon every once in a while (although, it’s for medical purposes; I have eczema and my doctor recommended tanning when it gets bad to calm my skin, and it actually works). And, of course, I do like that I get a little color in the process. :) There are a lot of things in the world that are “bad” for you, but people do them anyway. I think the key to anything is moderation.

  15. Hmm…. I need bullets to respond. ;)

    - Sorry about the shins- I hope the rest of the running for the week goes well!
    - Tanning is such a touchy subject these days. I’m kind of pro tanning for when you’re getting ready for vacay. Nothing sucks worse than being red and blistery after the first day of vacation. I’ve done it one too many times.
    - And CUTE dresses! Love!

  16. Kara says:

    Yay to point form!

    - Boo to stolen phones! I’m so glad I have the “Oops” insurance on my phone. I can lose it, break it in half or even have water damage and I’ll get a new one. I hope that chick has your phone in sound condition!
    - Good luck on your run and holy crap for going running with a hangover. I’m as useless as a (Insert something useless here) when I’m hungover!
    - I love the black and white dress! Very saucy ;)
    - Boo to tanning! If I HAD do fake it, I’d get a professional spray tan. Tanning beds scare me.
    - My weekend was average, filled with work at the other job! I did eat some delicious scalloped potatoes though. Yum!

I love the idea of writing in bullet points. Sometimes I feel like I have so much stuff going on and can’t pick a specific topic for a blog, so I don’t write anything at all. This would solve the problem!

  18. Jess says:

Spray tan!!! Don’t do the cancer beds. Seriously, it’s so so bad for you and the spray stuff can look nice. My coworker just got one and looks great. She recommends doing the lowest setting.

  19. Carissa says:

I think I agree with everyone else about getting the spray tan. in senior year of high school I went tanning before prom because I am pasty ALL THE TIME :) and I seriously fried myself– like lobster red. and it was my third session and I was only in for 7 minutes!!! no joke. I think the stupid girls at the shop might have put me in a bed with new bulbs but still, I’d be wary of the tanning beds. it is no fun having your boobs burned. I couldn’t wear a bra for a week! just sayin’ ;)

about the rest of your post, I do LOVE your new dresses! (especially that black and white one!) and I think you should maybe get that shin checked out… you’ve been complaining about it for awhile, yes? don’t ignore it! (that’s so “mom” of me, but it’s only cuz I care! :) )

  20. I really hope you get your phone back. that’s my greatest fear, losing me cell phone (even though it’s crap and I HATE it).

It sounds like you may have a shin splint. I would get it checked out, my sister had one and she had to do a few weeks of PT before she was allowed to start running again.

  21. Yay for pink phones coming home! Hope your shin is 100% for your race this weekend. Keep up the icing and the REST!

  22. Samantha says:

Wow who does that?! Can’t people just leave others stuff alone. goodness!

  23. Bathwater says:

Well at least you are getting your phone back. I a well lite place with a lot of people I hope.

  24. Becky says:

I’m at work and it’s crazy but I just wanted to say NO TANNING!!!!

  25. Tammy says:

    Hi Amber,

Hope you get your cell back! Then you would have a spare!!

Tanning… I am on the fence, I went tanning before we went to Mexico, all of 5 times. I figured being in the sun either way is not good for your skin. I did use a very good tanning lotion, with some self tanner in it.
You could always do a self tan. Spray non streaking. Or just love the skin you have! I know Eric must tan very easy and you would probably look super white beside him, but you are beautiful with pale skin!

My weekend was good. We came home from Mexico yesterday, took off at 150AM, landed at 805AM. Yesterday was a long day!

19 more sleeps!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Whoo hoo!! I am so EXCITED FOR YOU!!

ps. good luck with your 1500 word essay.

  26. Nikki says:

Boo for shin pain! Keep icing it and rest it if you need to! Trust me. I learned the hard way what happens when you push through pain!

Nice 10k time! If I drink a bottle of wine the night before will my time look like that too? Haha!

I’ve never tanned or spray tanned (blessed with quick tanning skin when I’m outside) so I can’t comment there, but I DO love your dresses! 19 sleeps! Yay!

  27. Sam says:

Am I being a bad friend if I say, yes, go tanning? Haha, I say that because I think I’m going to do the same tomorrow. And the next day. And the next… I’m so pale and I have no time to lay out for a legitimate amount of time to get a good tan. Plus, tanning booths are FREE at my apartment. That’s right, free!! How can I NOT tan then?

I hope your shin gets better!

  28. Katrina says:

What a weirdo that BB stealer is!! At least your getting it back right!
Dude tan it up…..if you don’t go all the time then its fine…..lol just don’t go crazy and come out looking orange…..you can tan without using tanning lotion….just use sun screen if your on the pale side and don’t go for very long. I go 2 or 3 times before we leave for a beach trip. My nickname is CASPER….my friend is 100% white (is that the right word to use???) anyway…and i’m only half and she’s darker then me, what’s up with that….lol Hence the name Casper.
Some of my best and longest runner were after and night out…..lol its so weird!!!

  29. So weird about your phone… maybe the guilt eventually got to her? Or perhaps someone else stole it, and then ditched it in the bathroom. I lost my wallet once, and it was mysteriously “found” in the bathroom of the gas station next door to where I lost it. All of the money was gone, but my credit cards were still there. AND it is a Louis Vuitton… perhaps the thief thought it was a fake?? LOL! I was just happy to get my wallet back, along with my pictures, etc. I canceled all of the CCs regardless, just to be safe!
I’d go for a spray tan. You can go to a professional, or get a spray one from the store. I like the L’oreal sublime one. The Neutrogena has a good spray, but the color isn’t as “real” as the sublime. If you are patient, it’s really easy to spray tan at home. You just HAVE to stand naked for a while to let it really dry! LOL!

  30. Megan says:

I say no to the tanning. Then again, I’m VERY pale and have never tanned. So, I’ve learned to embrace the pale. :)

Ouch at the shin! Hopefully it’s not shin splints. I’m hoping to start running soon, and my biggest fear is shin splints!

  31. eemusings says:

I don’t like my cheap touchscreen either, and doubt it’s going to last much longer. So glad you’re getting your phone back! Wonder what made her decide to do the right thing after three days?

Fake tan all the way – I hope you’re not thinking of sunbeds?

  32. I’d say tanning over spray tans.. I’ve seen one too many bad spray tans. Plus, tanning a few times before you go is no worse than whatever else we do to ourselves on a daily / semi-random basis.

  33. I deactivated my facebook profile so didn’t know your phone got stolen. Oh my gosh that is awful!! I hope you get it back today!

Sorry to hear about the shin… maybe they are shin splints or something? I haven’t had shin pain before, so am of no help.

As for the tanning, I have to give it a thumbs down. I used to be a sun goddess but am now a freak about sunscreen & not getting burnt. I think you should embrace your beautiful pale skin!!

    Love the dresses you bought!

  34. shoshanah says:

Congrats on getting your phone back! And I agree that I am addicted to my phone. I’m always checking it. Its hard to imagine how people survived even a few years ago without them. I mean how did they know what time it was? (Ok, fine… they used a watch, but still.)

I’m not a fan of fake tanning. Just the idea of it kind of sketches me out. So instead I just lay out in the sun to get skin cancer naturally. Of course, I’m lucky that I’ve always lived in places that stay pretty warm.

  35. lisa says:

The whole tanning thing is over-rated. Your skin is great. Just go with it as is.

  36. Have you been running a lot on sidewalks? My shins (especially inner shins) get very very sore when I’m running on hard concrete a lot. Take it to a dirt trail or a bike path or even the treadmill and see if that helps any.

Two words: spray tan. Regular tanning is horrific for you, but you know that already.

  37. Nora says:

Spray tan. I’m sure the chemicals aren’t much better for you but it seems to be slightly healthier than the UV bulbs.

    LOVE the dresses.

Sometimes my best workouts are after I’ve had a lot to drink… maybe there’s something to that!? =)

  38. Mel says:

I love the turquoise dress! :)

    LOVE IT. :D

  39. Oooooh the Europe countdown is ON!!!! I am so excited for you!!!!!!!!!!

  40. Mary Alice says:

I love the turquoise dress! Where did you get it?

Don’t tan. It’s not worth it. I used to, but I’ve gotten smarter about it. I’m starting to love my pale, beautiful skin.

  41. Anais says:

So I’m glad to know you WON’T be going tanning… tsk tsk tsk :P

I hope your shin gets better!! I hate shins (and shin splints), because really: is there any other MORE annoying body part? I mean all they cause is pain.

I’m so excited for you to go to Europe!!! It’s going to bring back so many nice memories (and a lot of envy ;)

    Hope the race went well!
