During my first year of college the weekends were for sleep, Eric and I would often sleep in until at least noon if not 1:00 PM. Now, when I sleep in until 9:00 AM I can’t help but think I’ve wasted my day!
Weekends are for getting things done and for kick-ass workouts.
On Saturday I woke up to beautiful sunshine in Kamloops. It was so nice outside! I spent some time do-daing around my apartment before finally dragging my butt out for a run. I had debated about going Sunday instead and I’m so glad I did it on Saturday as Sunday was not so beautiful and sunny here.
I wanted to do a long run but I hadn’t ran more then 6 miles since my 16-miler a few weeks ago. I settled for an 8 mile run with 5.5 of those miles in the trails.
Kenna Cartwright Park is my absolutely favourite place to run in Kamloops! I’m going to be sad when I move to my new apartment that isn’t a hop, skip and a jump away from these gorgeous trails.
After my awesome run I washed my car and then spent some time curled up in my armchair with a Jodi Picoult book I found on my shelf when attempting to pack up my books. Ya, clearly I didn’t get far…
Sunday morning I hit the gym for an hour-long bootcamp class followed by a 30-minute abs only class. Ya, I’m still feeling both of those! It totally kicked my butt. It was a plyometric-style class with lots of jumping and squats!
After I was done at the gym I grabbed a smoothie and headed off to get some grocery shopping done at the local Superstore.
I normally like to buy my groceries at the small, local stores that carry local food. There’s a place that’s actually just across the street from Superstore and it’s called “Old Farm Market” and that’s where I usually get my produce.
But, I had a huge haul of groceries to get and not a huge amount of money, so Superstore it was.
Look at all the groceries I got for a measly $172.
I truly do believe in the importance of buying local food and I do try to as much as possible. In a week, when I need to stock up on fresh produce again, I will go to the local grocery store and this summer I will hit up the Farmer’s Market every weekend.
But on Sunday, I needed a lot of food, I needed to get it all in one place and I needed it to not cost me an insane amount of money. At any other grocery store all this food probably would have been at least $200, if not more. I’m really pleased with the amount of stuff I got for $172!
So, tell me, what are your weekends for and what did you do this weekend? And where do you buy your groceries? Do you try to buy local food or do you just get it wherever is cheapest?

Sounds like a great weekend! I tend to go to the Superstore when buying on the cheap, or for household stuff and go to Save On for the day to day groceries as I find although pricier they have the freshest produce. During the summer-Wed/Sat Farmers market all the way!
I agree, the older I get, the more I want to do on the weekends so I don’t feel like I waste them! (And I want to take advantage of all this free time before kids!) Oh I love love love the farmer’s market - can’t wait ’till ours opens back up in May!
We buy groceries on the weekend usually, and we go to a few different stores (including superstore). For meat, and some produce we try to buy local.
Ours are for catching up on chores - cleaning the piles of laundry and the floors, visiting family and usually having a takeaway on a Friday night. I’m right there with you though - if I sleep past 9 I already feel like I’ve wasted the morning!
We try and buy local in the summer - there’s a little greengrocer’s not too far from us, but in the winter we usually go to Superstore or Safeway. I don’t like Safeway because it’s so expensive but it’s literally 5 blocks from where we live, so it’s hard to resist the convenience sometimes
My weekends are for catching up on sleep, catching up with friends, and induldging in some me time. I usually try to shop locally but based on the winter we’ve had thats not possible right now. I am so looking forward to summer when my local produce comes from my grandfathers garden — peppers, zucchini, cabbage, blueberries, apples, melons, etc. He plants a garden that keeps all of us in fresh food and its always delicious.
Weekends for me are for catching up - on whatever it may be I need: sleep, workouts, homework, errands. Usually its homework and workouts
Looks like lovely running trails!
I use weekends for a little bit of everything. Some times it’s to catch up on sleep, sometimes it’s to get in an awesome workout. It’s most definitely always for grocery shopping though. I tend to shop at the big grocery store just because it’s more convenient. I’m hoping to get to the Farmer’s Market more this summer.
Weekends are for getting things done! Cleaning our condo, running errands, checking things off my to-do list
We buy most of our groceries at Save-On because it’s the closest, but this summer I’ll probably buy produce at the farm market. I think Superstore has the best prices but it’s such a pain to shop there - it’s SO busy! Like Costco … I’d rather pay more and have a stress-free shopping exerience
Good for you Amber!! Sounds like you had a great weekend.
This weekend I was in Saskatoon doing a trade show. I had to take 3 pairs of shoes just to switch it up for comfort. Normally weekends consist of going to the gym first thing Saturday and Sunday mornings. I totally agree with you Amber, waking up at 9 am and it does feel like half your day is over.
Groceries - well, I usually go to Superstore, Sobey’s or Safeway. We get our carrots and potatoes from the Garden. At work we were just talking about the Farmers market in Regina, in the summer time they have it right down town on Wed and Saturdays and there is no where to park. I liked in GP they had it inside and it was all year! Maybe one day Sask will catch up with the rest of the world. ha.
Have a great Tuesday!!
My weekends are reserved for relaxing and getting chores done if I don’t have to work or couldn’t do them during my day off during the week.
I buy the majority of my groceries at Save On. My family has shopped there FOREVER, ever since it was an Overwaitea back in the day. (I think it switched to a Save On right before I moved to Kamloops in 2004.) Anyway, I like shopping there because they have a huge variety of food, local stuff included when it’s in season. I also really like that you don’t have to buy 2 when prices are “2 for $6″ or whatever, to get the deal price. Only place in town that does that! (Other than Coopers I think)
God, I could go on forever about grocery shopping!
I am the same way about my weekends. I asked this weekend if people tend to take weekends off from working out and a lot of people said they do- I was surprised because thats when I actually have time for good long work outs haha.
My weekends are definitely for sleeping in! I love sleeping in. Lately my weekends have been filled with wedding stuff and I’m sure they will get a lot busier soon!
We shop at Superstore just for convenience and money sake. We have a Safeway 5 minutes from us, so we only usually shop there when it is last minute things for dinner.
The weather was gorgeous here this weekend too! Makes me wish it was spring already
During the summer there is a market for local farmers downtown, 5 minute walk from my office. I buy all my produce there and it is amazing.
I hate sleeping in later than 8am on the weekends cause I dont want to waste it!! I like to make sure to use out of my weekend, so not matter what I am doing I like to make sure I can devote the most amount of hours to relaxing or reading or whatever!
Fall, winter and spring weekends are spent with my team, either flying to cities across Canada or practicing and playing games at home when other teams fly here. This winter weekends were especially busy with Opening Cermony rehearsals - I forget what a ‘real’ weekend is like, when my schedule isn’t already created and packed to the brim. In the summer weekends are for camping, beaching and escaping to the lake house with friends. If I have the chance to sleep in I tend to take it. Not into the afternoon, but I’m a total night owl, so I generally only get 4-5 hours of sleep a night as I have to wake up early for practice and work.
We grocery shop at Safeway, and I get my produce at a local market - it is cheaper and tastes better. I know Safeway isn’t the cheapest choice, but it is cheaper than a lot of the grocery stores around our place and I can’t handle the stress of busy Superstore very often. I’m willing to pay a bit more to enjoy grocery shopping I suppose.
Whoops. Anonymous was me
Weekends are for sleep and dreams, relaxing and getting my butt into gear with some exercises, reading if I can, indulging in some me time and some friend time and baking! Last weekend I was with my brother and we had the best time. Drinking. Walking. Talking. I made peanut butter pies. We spoiled ourselves and went out to eat twice. It was all just divine! I even slept in until 10 am on Saturday and 11 am on Sunday, both of which are unheard of for me these days
I LOVE my sleep though!
Amber, that looks expensive for what you got, but then again I can’t see everything and prices may be a bit higher where you are. I generally spend about $50-60 per week on groceries. We go to a mid level grocery store for most items and sometimes I stop at better places for organic fruit, veggies, meat, etc. When summer hits, I’m definitely going to try to hit the Saturday market as much as possible! Love the atmosphere and supporting local, organic eats!
Definitely not expensive for what I got! I ended up with six big walmart bags full of groceries and TONS of fresh produce. Keep in mind that’s in CAD dollars. Closer to $140-$150 American!
Yeah.. It looks to be on par with the amount we get at the store and depending on store and amount we spend around 120-160 american.
I did the same thing this weekend! Long bike rides in the beautiful weather and grocery shopping. That is indeed what weekends are for.
I go once a week. Usually to Whole Foods for produce and dairy products (and meat if I’m eating it that week) and the regular grocery store for staples. I also buy dry goods at this REALLY cheap grocery store. Oatmeal is oatmeal, you know?
Oh and I spend 40-60 a week on groceries depending on my hunger level and if I’m eating meat or not that week.
Weekends are for long runs!!! (I’d LOVE to run on your trails there…how gorgeous!) And chores, grocery shopping and cooking something to bring to work for lunch if I have the time. I prefer shopping locally, but that can get pretty expensive so for big shopping trips I admit I go to Walmart. I love Trader Joe’s, but it’s more than an hour away and I can’t do that too often. I can’t wait until the local farmers market is open again!
The weekends are for grocery shopping and running around….and reeeeeeeeeelaxing!!!! We usually go to Superstore and then to the farmers market for veggies, fruits and bread. Sometimes you can score at the reduced area….they have huge bags of assorted organic apples or pears, peppers, melons, potatoes, green beens…to name a few for about 80% off, its hit and miss though. The farmers market is only open Friday to Sunday so the reduced area usually has better stuff then you’d find in a grocery store. The farmers market is usually cheaper and the stuff actually looks and tastes like its suppose to. Z-spot (Zellers but we nicknamed it lol) is another place we go it usually has cheap canned tomotoes, beans (all sorts) and pasta, laundry detergent and toilet paper so we stock up there.
ha, busy weekend for you! and Holy, groceries!! NICE! I usually shop at Trader Joe’s and can NOT wait for the Farmer’s Markets to be back in business
which Jodi Piccoult book are you reading?? Love her!
Weekends are for work, research, chores, family time and friends. The order varies from weekend to weekend. This past weekend I went to visit a family friend who is dying of cancer for the last time. I found out a little while ago that today she slipped into a coma, and is unlikely to make it through the night. It’s sad, because she was like an aunty to me, but I’m glad I got to see her, and to see her smile again.
The day after I went to a large meet-up of English-speaking expats, and caught up with all my friends - many of whom I a haven’t seen for a month or more. It was a lovely chat.
I also managed to fit in some work, a ton of research and a lie-in, because I really needed one!
My days off (especially now that I work weekends) are for catching up and GETTING STUFF DONE.
It’s funny, T and I used to be exactly the same. Sleep for half the day and then laze around. Ah, those were the days…
Now we rarely sleep past 9. Usually more like 7 for him.
It’s amazing how little you get for your grocery money. We go to Pak and Save, the cheap supermarket. And then usually try to hit the butcher and grocer. I wouldn’t even really know where they sell local produce…maybe the farmer’s market?
What a beautiful trail! No wonder you love running there! Sounds like a fun, productive weekend
Weekends are for friends, fun & relaxing!! I LOVE THE WEEKENDS.
I like to shop anywhere that has sales, is convienent and has cute boys!!!
There is a local market down the hill and I find that almost every time I shope there I get ripped off or the Food has gone bad!!! Its cheesed me off so I have stopped going there!!
Yay! What a great grocery trip! I love the weekends! The weekeds are meant for sleep ins, late nights and fun times! Also for errands and good running! I love the weekends! Some weeks, the weekends keep me going!
My weekends used to be for housework…but now they are for going out and spending time with friends. I think I’m in the midst of some sort of quarter life crisis, because my party button has been pushed!
My weekends used to be more productive than they have been lately. Lately I have used my weekends to re-charge my battery. Which usually means sleeping in until 9 and then being as much of a hermit as I can possibly be…
I buy all the staple grocery items at a supermarket or Target. But I try to buy my produce at a smaller grocery store that tends to have higher quality produce. But in the winter, pretty much all produce is kind of crappy, so I get it at the supermarket as well. Once spring/summer growing season hits, that will change, though!
When I’m not in school, weekends are for sleeping in, getting in a good work out, and just being lazy. I really don’t care about getting a lot accomplished because I just love how slow and lazy weekends are.
When I am in school, I have to be up by at least 8am to get everything done. I use my weekends to get a lot of homework done.
Weekends used to be for sleeping in for me, too, but they’re so productive for me now. I clean the house. I do laundry. I grocery shop. (We like stores that a locally friendly. And I don’t know where the nearest Walmart is, so there are no worries about me going there.)
It’s funny how the weekends change when we get older, huh?
My weekends are for catching up on all the stuff I haven’t done during the week– cleaning, shopping, long runs, spending time with friends.
I am fortunate that every two weeks I get a three day weekend, and I usually do my big shop, hit the produce markets and laze around that day!
I probably spend WAY too much on groceries…
I try really hard not to do my grocery shopping at Wal-mart. So instead I go to the smaller grocery store that’s closer to my house, and probably spend more money. I don’t go to the farmer’s market, but I keep telling myself that I really need to start to.
I came here from Toronto Girl Out West…
I am from United States (roughly Philadelphia) so your photographs are very interesting to me.
What is Superstore???
I know what Tim Horton’s is, though! I am in my 40s and a lifelong hockey fan…when I was a kid I used to pay close attention to the advertising on the boards for games from Toronto and Montreal. We don’t have ESSO, either!
Congratulations with your hockey triumph, guys.
(i’m german, you guys kicked the crap out of us)
The trails look gorgeous!!! We have some nice paved trails to run on here but I’m definitely envious of your natural ones! Although I think I would be a bit afraid of twisting my ankle :S
Unfortunately, for me, week-ends are about writing papers. lol. And exercise I guess
Saturday is usually a rest day, and on Sunday I usually go for a long run. Now if only there was a bit more relaxing included
Which Jodi Picoult book are you reading? We’re reading Nineteen Minutes for the book club!
