Flashback Friday: Second year of college
Before I get into this flashback Friday post I want to tell you about my horrible day yesterday.
I ran over a cat.
Me and my friend Danielle were driving to her house when she shouted “That cat’s gonna get hit” as it darted in front of two cars, across the boulevard and right in front of my car.
Clerplunk.
It was the worst sound ever. I was SO upset. I pulled off the road and Danielle looked at the vehicle and didn’t see any fur or blood or anything and we drove back to look at it and couldn’t find it. A guy that was standing outside said he thought he knew what cat I was talking about and apparently it’s a stray. NOT that hitting a stray makes it OK but at least I know some little girl isn’t out looking for her kitty. Anyways, the whole thing really shook me up and kind of ruined the rest of the day for me.
OK, onto today’s post.

See a recap of my first year of college here.
So despite my whiny, feel-sorry-for-myself post the other day, not all of my college years were as terrible as the last few weeks have been. In fact, I would say my second year of college was the most fun I’ve ever had.
By this point, I was comfortable with the college experience and felt more “in my zone”. I also had a lot of friends in Grande Prairie at this point so I was never lacking someone to hang out with.
If I remember correctly my second year of college started out with a bang, with ten nights or so of drinking in a row! Hey, I had to catch up with everyone after being gone for four months
I absolutely loved my courses second year, too. They were challenging, interesting and fun. Some of the classes I can remember off the top of my head were, pop culture, drama, history, native studies, political science, logic and a few others. All really fun classes that I actually enjoyed going to.
I worked part-time at the restaurant again and became really close with a few of the girls there and we went out quite often.
Another thing that was different this year was that Eric moved to Dawson Creek, B.C., which was only 1.5 hours from GP not 2.5 hours like FSJ. Being that extra hour closer made a world of difference! I could still go out with my friends on the weekends and go visit Eric for only one night or for the day. We used to have a lot of fun visiting each other on the weekends that year.
And finally, January 2008, which was the beginning of my second semester of my second year was when I started losing weight. Between January and May 2008 I lost about 25 pounds just by starting to work out regularly and by counting calories and actually learning about portion sizes. Goodbye, Freshmen 15! You can read more about my weight loss here.
Some photos from second year.
My 19th Birthday:

At a Rihanna concert:

Halloween 2007:

Our staff Christmas party (still consider this one of the most fun nights of my life!) Also, while I was looking through this folder on my computer for pictures to share I came across some of the DELICIOUS food we had that night so I thought I’d share that too:

My going away party at the end of the year (another night that is right up there with one of the most fun nights of my life!):
We started the night with green apple martini’s…

…and moved on to chocolate truffle cake.

Grrrrrr…

…shots, shots, shots!

Two very hungover girls the next morning! This was my last morning ever in Grande Prairie – I left town with my vehicle full a few hours later

Reminiscing this made me really, really miss my second year of college. It was such a blast and I made some amazing friends. There were countless nights spent drinking wine and having girl talk, going to the bar or just hanging out and watching movies. SO fun!
Which year of college was your favourite? Why? And tell me about your second year of college!
PS: The star of all those photos is my good friend Jen!

I love these “flashbacks” you’re doing! And so sorry to hear about the cat yesterday – so hard when things like that happen!
Happy weekend love!
Your story about the stray reminds me of some signs I saw posted in our neighborhood yesterday. About a lost dog. On the notice, it said, “dog does not have collar or tags.” And I couldn’t help thinking to myself that the owner deserves never to see that dog again – how effing irresponsible. Of course, then I thought of that poor dog and felt guilty for thinking those thoughts. Anyway, not really related to hitting a poor cat … can you tell I have Friday brain? hahah.
ohmygod – i’ve ran over a rabbit. it is a horrible feeling!
doesn’t matter if it’s a wild animal or not! just the feel ughh! and i’m so used to seeing animals dead in the road! but doing it yourself. EEK!
Awww these look like such fun pictures!
I’m soooo sorry about the cat! I didn’t get your message til this morning and figured you might not appreciate a response at 3am your time haha. Obviously you know it was not your fault but that does not make it any easier
I am seriously impressed by your 10 nights of drinking in a row. I’ve probably had like 3 or 4 tops. I think my second year of college was probably my favorite which will be next week. You know I love this idea, right? haha
I ran over a rabbit last year and I cried all the way home – and it was an hour drive!
Ugh- sorry to hear about the cat! I get sad when I run over squirrels… i know the feeling.
My favorite year was my freshmen year- I am still close friends with a good majority of that group from the dorms and we never went anywhere unless we were riding in the car 10 deep. Good times!
*And I realize I just made it sound like I run over squirrels all the time. It’s only been like two… I swear!
Love the pics
college flashbacks never get old!!! Looks like you’ve defnitely enjoyed your time with friends!
I’m sorry to hear about the cat. I ran over one of my family’s cats once and didn’t drive for weeks afterward, I felt so bad about it! My third year of uni was my favourite – I loved my classes, my friends were awesome, I had a great social life – it was just a fun year. My second year sucked … it was my hardest year academically (I had the brilliant idea of trying to get as many of my economics pre-reqs out of the way in one year as I could!) as well as emotionally, since that was the year I found out the guy I was engaged to was a loser-jerk-creep and broke things off with him. Good times …
I brake for everything! Poor little kitty. I’m just glad you weren’t alone! I’d have a panic attack.
I have no idea which year of university was most memorable for me. 2nd year was pretty awesome because I met one of my best friends during that time. 3rd year was awesome because I started J-School and 4th year was amazing because it was the last one and I made some amazing memories just with my classmates.
I’m definitely going to have to do a Flashback post soon
Love the pics, glad I made a cameo!! Man we drank…A-L-O-T….Such fun times, cant wait to have more in the future..love you!!! xoxo
PS…the one of us drinking green martinis….why didn’t you tell me my hair looked like a chia pet… it looks RIDICIOULUS
I love flashback picures for the sole purpose of saying “what the heck was I thinking wearing that?/what was up with my makeup?/oh, my blonde/red/brown/ hair phase”. Old pictures make me laugh, and question my own sanity!
As for the cat incident… I have had that happen when a dog ran out! That was the freakiest, scariest thing ever, but the dog was fine, he actually wasn’t hit. I’m sure the cat got spooked and ran to hide. {hugs}
I can imagine how sick you must have felt all day after hitting that cat!
My favourite year of college was my fourth and final year, for the exact same reasons you loved your first and second years: the classes were interesting, fascinating even, I was really challenged, but not in a tear-my-hair-out way. I don’t know, but for some reason, everything just finally came together for me in my last year.
As for worse year, that would be my second year. Unfortunately, I had a whole host of health problems that came to the surface that year, and I was trying different ways of dealing with them. The net result was chronic exhaustion, lack of concentration, lack of motivation, etc. It didn’t help that I found that most of the other students in the year were really competitive. I was so tired that I honestly don’t remember whether or not the classes were challenging or not. Bad year. Very bad year.
My second year of college was much less exciting. I moved back home, was working 4 days a week at my job at a preschool, commuting an hour to campus 1 day a week. I started my teaching internships, working with 1st graders 1 day a week during the fall and with 4th graders 2 days a week in the spring. I started questioning my teaching ability. I quit my job in March. And kinda just floated along. No real fun drinking stories, lol. Pretty boring, actually.
I think my favorite year was my 4th year, also known as my 1st senior year of college, and my least favorite was my 2nd year.
About the cat…all i can say is that it sounds like you might not have killed it if you didn’t see anything when you stopped? But no one wants to hit a cat (or any animal for that matter). I always have mini heart attacks when a bird, cat, or rodent comes across my car’s path. It’s scary!
Have a great weekend!
I don’t think I remember 2nd year!! haha!! it is all a blur!
Sorry to hear about that cat
Don’t feel bad though … not your fault.
I don’t think I’ve ever hit anything, but I’m sure if I ever do I will be freaking out just as much.
But on a happier note, I love your red ridding hood costume. As for my favorite year in college, they’re starting to all blend together. (Boy do I sound old!) But I think it was probably senior year. Or maybe I’m just saying that because its freshest in my mind
So far sophomore year was definitely my favorite year. Like you, I really found my ‘zone’, routine and good friends. I had a lot of fun. Junior year is fun too it’s just a little different because everyone is scattered because a lot of people go abroad for part/all of their junior year.
what fun photos! looks like a great second year!
It’s so hard to remember exactly what I did my second year of college… that was five years ago for me! ack, I feel so old now! time really does fly by. but if I remember correctly, I joined my sorority my sophomore year and I was still dating my first boyfriend. but I still hadn’t had my first drink yet (I was a “good girl” and waited till I was 21… sometimes I wish I hadn’t been so good. ha!). since I was still dating Jason, my first bf, and he was living in Simi, I drove home a lot on weekends to be with him. I sometimes wish I didn’t do that, that I stayed on campus more and did the college thing but that past is the past. I know I had fun though and I loved my roomies– that’s what I miss most from college, my incredible roommates! but I still stay in touch with most of them. one called me yesterday and I was so happy to talk to her! and I might go to Vegas with another next month! ok, I’ll stop rambling now. but thanks for sharing your second year with us! made me stop and remember my own
oooooooh. i’m so sorry about the kitty.
this may sound bad but its not intentional…. im trying to make you feel better…. where i live, cats, rodents, deer and any other wild animals ALWAYS get run over. I’ve hit quite a few in my time… i always cry and carry on but i guess i consider it a fact of life!
It is so hard to pick my favorite year of college. I might have to say my sophomore year, too. It’s hard to say, though. Spring of my junior year was when I studied abroad, so that’s right up there, too. And spring of my senior year was awesome. So I guess certain semesters stand out more than years.
Poor kitty. I don’t blame you, although I’d love to give you a little bit of hell for it.
Also? You’re just the cutest thing ever.
That’s all.
Awww
Maybe it didn’t get hit since you couldn’t find it??
The only thing I ever hit was a rabbit
It was SO SO SO sad!!!
I’m sorry about the cat incident. That would freak me out so bad!!
