So, if you’re anything like me, you spent the majority of the weekend watching the Vancouver 2010 Olympic Winter Games (Go Canada). I still cannot get over the fact that they’re not only being hosted in MY country but in MY province! Four hours south of me in a city I’ve been to several times! Amazing. Don’t even get me started on how excited I was last night when Alexandre Bilodeau won gold. The first gold medal ever to be won by a Canadian on Canadian soil. Omg, what an amazing and exciting moment for Canada!
I just love watching the Olympics!!!
Moving on, I thought we’d stick with the Olympic theme this week and talk about what kind of Olympic athlete we’d like to be?
Most of us do some kind of sport in our free time or played sports growing up. I think that being part of a team is so important for a child/teenagers development. It really is an amazing feeling to be a part of a team and to be involved in a sport. And, for the ones that have the dedication, talent and skill to grow up to be an Olympic athlete? Well, in my opinion, that’s amazing!
So, if I was an Olympic athlete I would want to be….
For the Winter Games, a hockey player. Easily. I’ve talked before about how I used to be a hockey player. I played the sport competitively for six years and one year I played very competitively and was chosen to be a part of Team North and go to a tournament that included all the best female hockey players in B.C. It was an amazing experience.
I will never forget what it felt like to be part of a team. It was an amazing experience and even though playing hockey basically dominated my life for six years, I don’t regret it at all.
For the Summer Games (which I’m not nearly as interested in as the Winter Games), a swimmer or a triathlete. Confession; I had to Google what all the different Summer Games sports are because I had no idea.
Anyways, I’ve swam for as long as I can remember and it is one of my absolutely favourite forms of exercise. Swimming is so meditative for me. I also chose triathlete because even though I’ve never done a triathlon it combines two things I love, swimming and running. I would just have to learn the biking part a little better! I actually plan on competing in a triathlon one day!
So if you could quit your day job and become an Olympic athlete what kind of athlete would you be for the Winter Games and the Summer Games? And did you dream of being an Olympic or professional athlete when you were a kid?
Oh, and once again, GO CANADA GO!

For Summer, probably swimming. It’s my favorite Olympic sport and I like that you can participate in so many different events. I’d also love to be a runner (not sprinter or marathoner, but probably a middle distance runner). For Winter, all of a sudden I’m all about mogul skiing. It just looks like fun and I like that they play music during the runs. That said, I’m not good at swimming or skiing.
For the winter games, I’d want to be a mogul skiier, but I have never downhill skied before and I’m a total chicken so I doubt I’d do well. If I was actually going to try, I’d probably choose either curling or long-track speed skating. For the summer games, I’d want to be a beach volleyball player or maybe a rower (though I’ve never rowed before … it just seems like it’d be fun).
Congrats on Alexandre’s win! We were all cheering for him at my parents’ house! :o)
I would love to be a skier for the Winter olympics or a biathlete. For summer a runner or a bball player. Team sports are nice but sometimes I like just knowing all I can rely on is myself. having played on both team and individual sports I don’t know which one I like the best.
I have to go girly on this one & say for the winter Olympics, I’d be a figure skater!
For the summer olympics, I’d like to be a track star of some sort! Maybe I would run a crazy fast mile? Or I’d love to be a swimmer.
I just adore the Olympics! How exciting that it is in our country & so close to where you live!
I absolutely love the Olympics and all aspects of the games. What child doesn’t dream of standing on the medal podium hearing their national anthem played? Even now when watching the medal ceremonies, I tear up regardless of what country anthem is playing. I think if I were going to be an Olympic athelete I would want to be in the biathalon that involves cross country skiing and shooting. I watched it yesterday and think it would be awesome to try. (The reality is, I’ve never been on skiis).
Winter games: definitely a figure skater. I love the speed and grace of it. And I don’t watch
Olympic games: gymnastics. I used to do gymnastics when I was little and I love watching it. That and tennis.
i’ve been thinking about you the whole time watching the games. i love the winter olympics, curling is my favorite sport.
in 1996 the summer games were in atlanta, just 2.5 hours south of where i lived in greenville. so i know the excitement you are feeling right now. my summer sport would have to be triathlon.
I was so excited for Alexandre Bilodeau last night too! And I’m not even Canadian!
haha
Hmmm.. Good question!
I’m the opposite of you, I watch the Winter Olympics, but I’m not as into them as I am into Summer. I think if I was to be anything in the Winter Olympics, I would WANT to be a Snowboarder, I love the half-pipe tricks. But, I’m too tall! Soooo.. I think instead I would pick to be a Speed Skater. That sounds fun. (although I am not good at Ice Skating, I’m just not athletic! lol!)
For Summer.. this is harder for me. I love the Gymnastics, but could never do it, I love the diving, but probably couldn’t do that either. Haha. So.. Let’s go for Beach Volleyball!
your actually the hugest dork in the world, i cant believe your so into the olympics hahaha it makes me laugh. i havent even noticed that they are on tv yet. then again, i dont have tv.
i always wanted to a be a luger but after this years little accident, ive crossed that off the list. i think ill stick with snowboarding for my winter olympic career.
for the summer olympics id like to picture myself as a star table tennis player. or judo, ive always been good at that too.
Great question! I can only imagine the excitement going on where you live. I’ve pretty much been glued to the TV since the Olympics started.
Winter Sport: Downhill skiing (in real life I can barely ski)
Summer: Long Distance Track events (not marathon)
I have never dreamed of being an athlete, but if I could quit my job and pick a sport to become amazing at, it would probably be skiing!
Until I was 21 or so, my goal in life was to compete in the Olympics as part of the Canadian Equestrian Team in showjumping. I practically LIVED at the barn. I moved to Alberta in 2005 and spent the summer working at a youth ranch for inner city kids and my goals did a complete 180 - I still love riding, but I haven’t competed since then. Now I’m working on getting my coaching certification and I want to run a youth ranch of my own someday
But obviously, if I was in the summer Olympics, I would be competing in something horsey ~ I’d love to try the 3-day eventing but I’ve never ridden a cross country course, so yeah. If I was in the winter Olympics I’d be a snowboarder
Ohhhh the Olympics! If I were an athlete in the summer ones it would def. be as a gymnast. (I was a gymnast when I was younger and was fast-tracked to go places but decided as a 10 year old I wanted a life and not just training). For the winter olympics I would say figure skating - I love love LOVE it!
Oh tough question! I would probably be… maybe a groom for the horses in competition?
I really hate being the centre of attention, I think that if I had to compete in any event it would be awful for me, but being someone behind the scenes (like maybe the stage manager of the opening ceremonies?) who makes sure all the gears are turning would make me as happy as a clam.
I would love to be either a swimmer or a gymnast. It amazes me the things those girls can do! In the winter games, I’d like to be a figure skater. I know, I’m such a girl. Haha.
I’m so, so ,so proud to be from B.C. right now (born and raised) and the Opening Ceremonies were amazing in my biased eyes, despite the glitches. If I coulddo any sport it would be figure skating (they seem so graceful and strong) or gymnastics (they seem so bendy and strong). Great post!
What a fun post!
For the winter games, I think I would like to do the biathlon (random - it just looks like fun!).
And for the summer, triathlon or swimming too. Or horseback riding…. lol
Not so much an athlete, per se, but rather Canadian mogul skier Chloe Dufour-Lapointe’s boyfriend.
Also, Bilodeau, because I’d milk that ‘first Canadian athlete to ever win gold in Canada’ til its dry and not pay for another beer for years.
Love this post I would def be a hockey player or a figure skater or a gymnast though honestly I don’t think I have the discipline to be a full time athlete ill stick to teaching
Oh, definitely a figure skater. I grew up skating — and still do it. Rhinestones are in my blood!
A close second in the winter Olympics would be hockey. I started playing hockey in college. Love, love, love it. What it has that figure skating doesn’t? Lots of teammates!
For summer, it is soccer. Hands down!
Go Canada! Yaaay! I’m soooo glad we won gold on the second day of events! Can I get a fist pump? Yay!
Anyway, for the Winter Olympics I think I’d like to be in the biathlon, because that’s pretty cool, or hockey, even though I can’t skate to save my life.
For the Summer Oympics, I’d have to go with a martial art. Maybe Taekwondo or judo? That’d be neat. Orrr maybe gymnastics.
I definitely spent my entire weekend watching the Olympics, and I thought of you when Alexandre Bilodeau won : )
If I were an Olympic athlete I (like you) would be a hockey player. I LOVE the team aspect of the game. I also played softball growing up, but I just felt like it was way to individualized. Hockey is such a great game.
For the summer Olympics, I would love to do gymnastics. I seriously think this is my favorite Olympic sport to watch. I know it goes against all my ‘team sports loving’ but I just think everything they do is so impressive and intense and Shawn Johnson is my hero.
Great post!!
I’m going to go with a total girl answer and say gymnastics and figure skating. Growing up, I was OBSESSED with both, especially with the 1996 girls team and Michelle Kwan/Tara Lipinski. I had almost all their autobiographies and biographies. And I just love the dedication that goes into those sports. It really becomes their entire world from the time they’re young and they don’t grow up with any kind of normal childhood.
When I was little I really wanted to be a gymnast in the summer Olympics. My friend and I would pretend on my swing set. We took the swings down and pretended to be on the bars ha. For winter sports, figure skating for sure. Also used to pretend this on the lake in the back yard ha.
been busy with girls weekend - so i haven’t even watched any of the olympics. but my sport — beach volleyball!!!!
A runner or gymnast for sure!! both my favorite sports to watch!!! And thirdly, probably beach volleyball!! i love sand!
Winter - cross county skiing. Summer - gymnastics or, OC the marathon!
Thanks so much for the kind comments! I’m happy to be back to reading and posting
As far as your topic for today, I’d definitely love to be a figure skater. I took figure skating lessons for a few years and was pretty good at it (since it was so similar to ballet), so that’s all I envision for winter Olympics.
As for summer? Hmm, I’d love to say triathlon or something different, but you KNOW with me it’s marathoning
Yay Canada! I know quite a few people in BC who are stoked … I wish I could have gone an seen them, but I think TV is good enough
So proud of our first gold, too!
And ooo … you’re tough girl, taking on the hockey player role. You could help Canada with their 16-0 on Slovakia the other day haha. For me, I’d choose figure skating for Winter Games and gymnast or volleyball for Summer Games … just beecause, when I was younger, I’d pretend to skate around my living room, and I’d get on top of my couch and pretend to be a gymnast! Hope you’ve had an amazing weekend!
summer - swimmer, because i actually used to be one.
winter - speed skating long track.
I didn’t play any sports as a kid… ever… not one. But I was in orchestra. And that involves teamwork.
If I were coordinated enough to do any sports, I’d want to be a snowboards for winter and do archery/ some sort of biathalon type thing for summer.
