Computer Problems AGAIN

in blogging, family, home

So, remember this post when my computer showed me the screen of death and died. And then I sent it off to my cousin in Edmonton who works for Toshiba, and he replaced the hard drive and sent it back to me and then it wouldn’t turn on again so I sent it back to him and he replaced the motherboard and sent it back to me and I finally got it back about a month ago?

Remember all that?

Well, Monday night I come home from the movie (Valentines Day - very cute movie, I recommend it!) and go to turn on my computer and, nothing. It was as if I hadn’t even pressed the button. It didn’t even try to boot up!

I press the button again. Nothing.

I make sure it’s plugged in and hold the button down for five seconds. Nothing.

You’ve got to be kidding me.

I’m currently without a laptop. Again. And not happy about it. Clearly this computer is just a total lemon but it really, really pisses me off that it keeps crashing. That is not OK. Especially considering it’s not even a year old, I just got it last June. It’s a Toshiba Satellite L300 and I am NOT impressed with it. I had a Toshiba before this one that worked good but then completely crashed after only three years.

So now I’m looking into getting another new laptop (and I need a laptop not a desktop because of the kind of work I do and the kinds of things I use my laptop for!)

Between all the things I do on the computer I NEED one at home. I’m pretty sure Toshiba should make it up to me and give me a brand spanking new, very fancy laptop. Whaddya say, Toshiba?

On a much happier/lighter note, by the time most of you read this I will be home.

I haven’t seen Eric for six, long weeks. It’s the longest amount of time we’ve ever spent apart in the last five years. Needless to say, I’m ecstatic to be going home for five days.

But, unfortunately, due to the problems with my laptop and the fact that I’ll be trying to cram in as much time with Eric and family all while also studying for the two midterms that I have at the beginning of next week means I’ll be taking a little bloggy break while I’m at home!

See ya’ll Monday! XO

Do you have a laptop or desktop computer? What brand (are you a Mac or PC)? Would you recommend it? What’s the worst computer problem you’ve ever had?

I feel your pain. I spent 9 effing hours yesterday trying to fix my pc and transfer all my files to a new one. It was not pretty. All my ports died, no way to burn files, usb etc. I was literally crying at the end of the day from pure frurstration. I hope the Toshiba peeps don’t give you too much trouble.

Have a wonderful visit with Eric & the fam!!

I have a Dell only because I’m on a strict budget… but I bought the warrenty for 2 additional years just in case I run into any problems like i did last year when my harddrive crashed! NOT FUN! Here’s hoping you get yours back soon and have fun with Eric! :)

Ugh! Computer problems are the worst! I was always a PC girl (Dell) until I got married and the hubby got me a Mac laptop for Christmas - I will never go back now. I don’t use it for nearly what it’s potential is (basically just documents, pictures, and online stuff), but I love it!

Toshiba definitely SHOULD give you a brand new one, but if you can afford to get a Mac laptop I would say it’s worth it!

Enjoy your time away!! Soak up every minute.

An internet break might be good for you. I take a break from the interwebs every time I go home or go on vacation and it’s kind of good for me!

I have a Dell - it’s ok. Don’t love it. Don’t hate it. Haven’t had too many problems. I think my next computer will be a Mac, though!

I have had a few (awful!!) Toshibas that would die about a year and a half after purchase. Luckily, my grandfather bought me new one after new one, though he didn’t know why they kept dying so quickly. I finally got an HP Pavillion something or another in like…. 2007 and it’s still running great. Luckily I now have a computer networking husband that maintains it for me, but the worst thing that has happened was my being lazy and accidentally clicking yes to something that installed a virus. I recommend the HPs for sure!

I’m telling you — get a mac. I’m on my 2nd mac — i’ve had my first one for 7 or 8 years, and it was still functioning, but not fast enough. the second one i’ve had for a couple years now….and it’s still like new!

maybe it’s something as simple as needing a new power cord. i’ve had power cord failures. then the battery won’t charge. then the laptop can’t turn on.

Oh my gosh I had this EXACT problem last year - the lights were on, but nobody was home, and it just would not power on. I brought it to my IT guy at work, who showed up a few hours later with a bracelet of mine… which had somehow fallen INSIDE the tower, lodged in against the motherboard, short circuited everything and had a small explosion. LOL. Luckily the hard drives were fine and I could just plug them into a new computer, but it was a pain in the arse!!

I would say hands down MAC :) Steve had his for about 4 years and it still worked even after i bounced it off the bed and it hitting the floor cracking the screen……..LOL i clearly didn’t know my own strength OOOOPS!!! But i love macs, they are simple and straight forward and was trouble free. Well worth the extra monies.

YAYAYAYAY for your Eric and fam visit!! Say hi to everyone :)

I hope you have a great trip home!!!! That’s awesome! :)
You know I’m a Mac and am always supportive of anything Apple. The only problems I have ever had were caused by me (spilling water on the keyboard is not recommended) and not the actual computer. I’m sure Macs get problems just like anything else but I love how helpful and friendly the people at Apple are. I can walk in there and they will get me taken care of right away at the “Genius Bar” It’s soooo nice! :)
I hope you get your laptop issues worked out! Going without a computer is a pain the butt!

I hope you have a great time visiting at home! Enjoy your time with Eric! I know what it’s like to go a long time without seeing your love, and what it’s like to finally see him again… it’s such a breath of fresh air.

I’m sorry about your computer troubles; I know how frustrating that can be. My husband has a Toshiba laptop, and although I’ve heard good things about the brand, he’s had nothing but problems with it. We have an HP desktop in the house, but I mostly use my Dell Laptop that I got halfway through college. It’s lasted me 5-6 years, but now it’s starting to be a little slow (as far as loading pages and images and such), so I’m starting to look for a new one. I just have NO idea what kind I want to buy.

From my freshman year of college till last summer (total 5 years) I had a Dell PC and loved it even though it totally died just 3 weeks after I got it freshman year and then the hard drive went my second year of college. My dad uses it now so he can sit and watch tv and surf the internet. When I got it I made sure to buy the extended warrenty (3 years) and it paid off because they sent me a new laptop when mine died and a new hard drive when mine died.

I now have a Macbook (13.3 inch screen) and love it. It is so easy and works well. I don’t have the Microsoft stuff for mac but I have used it on a friends mac and it is very good with taking files made on a PC and opening them with correct format on a Mac.

Mac! Mac! Mac!

I have two desktops at home: a Dell and a Mac, both about five years old. To be honest, I haven’t even turned the PC on since I got the Mac last summer (used). It’s a dream. It’s beautiful.

I haven’t actually used a Mac laptop (as I favour desktops in all scenarios except travel and I have an Acer for that) but I’m confident in the brand as a whole.

I highly recommend looking into Macs for your next computer. I doubt you’ll be disappointed.

That is too crazy! I have had three Toshibas and haven’t really ever had problems. I had a sony that crapped out on me once and would love to one day have a beautiful MAC. ….Just thinking of all the cool graphics and fun little things I could do easily on a MAC make my heart flutter a little… :)

Glad to hear Valentine’s Day is a cute movie! I hope to see it this weekend!

Have a wonderful time at home and I’m working on sending you everything by Friday.

I had a Macbook Pro, which I had for 3 year, not a single problem. Then I upgraded to a new macbook pro, it rocks.

They are more expensive initially, but worth every penny.

Ugh that sucks. I have a laptop and I LOVE IT. Minus the part where I broke my keyboard a couple weeks ago and I am still buttering my hubby up to spend the 15 to replace it. I have been blessed with hardly no computer problems. But my dad and husband are computer nerds so most everything has always been a quick fix. The worst was probably the virus I got at Michigan State in 2003, but the hubby came to the rescue of me and about 10 people via a phone call. :) Have fun with Eric. I will miss your posts!

I’m a PC. :)

I currently have a Dell laptop and an Acer netbook. My laptop is on its last legs so I got the netbook to replace it - unfortunately I have to keep the laptop for uploading photos and downloading music.

The worst thing that happened to me computer wise was when my laptop fell foul of a trojan horse. In the end, I had to have my hard drive entirely wiped. It was a total pain.

:( That so totally sucks! I know how essential having a laptop is - without mine I really have no clue how I could do anything school-related! I have a Toshiba too , and the one before that died kind of like yours… REALLY annoying, most of all when you have a 40 page paper on there that wasn’t backed up anywhere due in a few days.

I’m definitely thinking of switching to a mac when this one starts sputtering. I think I would still keep it on hand for the few programs that don’t work on a mac though! Have fun at home :)

I HATE computer problems! I had a Toshiba too and then it started doing all that weird stuff! The first time it happened was about a year ago, it turned on but showed an error message and there were all these problems. I finally begged this really smart computer kid to help me out, he spent HOURS with my computer, I felt so bad! Then this winter break it happened again, this time it was just SO slow turning on (legit I timed it once, 25 minutes!). It would pretty much be stuck at the opening “loading” screen. I knew it was going to crash any minute so I loaded everything on to my external hard drive. I sent it to computer people to see what was wrong a couple times- they didn’t know. Finally I got a mac. Converted & so far so good!! Good luck with your computer problems! So sorry this keeps happening..

I have a Dell which in general has been pretty good to me. Except of course when the hard drive died twice over a month. The nice people in India just had me reformat my laptop the first time, but really should have just sent my a new hard drive. That’s what they did after it crashed the second time (for free since it was still under warranty), and thankfully its been good ever since!

I hope you get your laptop situation worked out, but more importantly I hope you have a great few days with Eric!

Oh no! Being sans computer is never a good thing. I would say if you can swing it, get a mac. I am a PC gal myself but I am 99% sure my next laptop will be a mac. I have laptops. I had a Dell for a while, but honestly I paid too much money for what I used it for and it lasted 5-6 years. I had a few problems with it but then when it died I bought an HP. I have had no problems with and I really like it. If you do get a PC try to get one with an Intel chip, they tend to last longer than ones with an AMD one. Your Toshiba didn’t have any sort of warranty since it was under a year old?

Have a fantastic time at home!

i started out on an Acer, that lasted me all of 2 months before i convinced my dad to replace it with a macbook. i had that macbook for 5 and a half years. it went through two universities, 8 states, and a whole glass of lemonade (boy was that a mess.) not once did i have to take it in to get repaired, upgraded or replaced. i did have to buy more memory for it, only because things can really start piling up after 5 years. finally, this past christmas, my lovely boyfriend bought me a brand-spanking new 15-inch macbook pro, which i love to pieces. it does everything i could ever want it to do and more.

meanwhile, he owns two toshiba laptops and is constantly having problems with them, continually uninstalling and reinstalling programs, restarting it, taking it apart and putting it back together…honestly, it’s more work than should be necessary.

so yeah, i’m an avid macophile. definitely gonna say to go with a macbook pro if you want a great laptop.

OK…I’ve been away from blogging for a while so I just caught up to you.
1) Belated happy anniversary to you and Eric - 5 years is amazing!
2) way to go on the 16 mile run! I had the same feeling towards the end of my half - which was my longest distance ever. I need to train long distances more before the next half (if injuries stay away!)
3) have FUN at home! But I’m sure I don’t need to tell you that!
4) I have an HP laptop. It’s nearly 6.5 years old now. You read that right. It’s ancient. And it has never crashed. It’s old and doesn’t do a lot of new/fancy things but it’s paid for and it’s reliable!

I have a desktop at home - because I want the performance/graphics there more than I want the portability. I laptop it at work though.

If I were to buy myself a laptop it would be a Dell. I would not get a Dell desktop though - I would have a new desktop custom built for me.

Oh, and I’m PC both at work and home.

I have 2 HP Pavilions both pretty new, but they’ve had their problems. About once every 2 months, they won’t boot. But I learned this trick that I just have to take the battery out for 10 seconds, put it back in and then it boots fine. Strange but true.

I have an HP laptop. LOVE it. I wanted to get a mac, but to be honest, I was on a strict budget and I could get a lot more at the time for a few hundred+ dollars less. Also I just KNOW how to use a PC better anyway. And unfortunately, corporate America still relies MOSTLY on PC. I don’t have a need to get a mac if I’m not into graphic design or whatever. My HP pc allows to me to surf the net, edit pictures, do word processing, spreadsheets, etc.

Just don’t buy a Dell. As soon as my 1 year warranty expired on mine? Yep, you guessed it. It died. Completely. Freaking A.

I’m a MAC girl all the way. I love my MAC and have found that I have TONS fewer problems than I had with my PC. I was very skeptical to switch to a MAC, but I did so about 5 years ago and love love love love love love it!
It’s super easy to use & very instinctive. If you’re decent (you don’t have to be good!) with computers, you’ll get the hang of a MAC in no time.
