I am such an impatient person. When I want something I want it NOW.
After my post on Friday about needing new shoes I decided to stop at the two local running stores on my way home. One store had my shoes on for $189.99 and the other for $199.99. I don’t know WHAT I was thinking but I bought the $199.99 ones ($223 with tax). The sales guy was cute. And friendly. I suck at saying No.
Anyways, I immediately had buyers remorse and rushed home to see what I could find online. I found them at runningfree.com with express shipping (in 3 days) for $170. A $50 difference. I ordered them with plans of returning the other ones the next day.
Then Saturday morning my aunt leaves me the following comment:

So I go and look and sure enough I can get them at ladyfootlocker.com for $121 including shipping.
ARRGGGHHH
So what did I do? I bought them of course. At this point I’d spent $516 on three pairs of shoes in two days with no refunds, yet.
I quickly phoned runningfree.com and canceled my order since it hadn’t shipped yet. I then rushed down to the local running store and returned the other pair of shoes since, you know, I’d just bought them like 16 hours earlier and hadn’t even taken them out of the box. I stuttered my way through an excuse with cute boy. Picture me staring at my feet mumbling, “well, ummmm, I, ummm, found them for$100cheaperonline. *blushes*”
I then went to the OTHER running store in town and purchased a pair of insoles for extra support in the shoes I have now so they’ll last me for another 20 days until my ones from ladyfootlocker.com arrive. The insoles cost $15.
Total cost in the end:
- $121 for shoes.
- $15 for insoles.
- An insane amount of stress and running around like a chicken with it’s head cut off.
Total = $136.
So in the end, I did save $87 off the first purchase and $36 off the second purchase. So it was probably worth all the running around and being stressed and racking up my credit card bill to the point of almost being declined. Probably..
Of course, I could have avoided all that stress if I’d just been more patient and shopped around a little.
Patience. Just one more thing I need to work on.
On another note, if you’d like a double-dose of me today (and, really, who wouldn’t!?), head on over to Mandy’s blog where I talk about what type of friend I am.

I just love finding the sales so i tend to think “Oh i can find it cheaper!” and then i end up not even getting it! I am such a cheapskate and just go to Dicks sporting goods and buy the cheapest pair of shoes i can get!
Way to find them cheaper! I have zero patience. When I want something I HAVE to have it right away. Not good. So I will make purchases without shopping around…. I know it’s not good and not financially savvy but oh well!
Enjoy your new shoes! I saw a girl at the gym yesterday wearing some Mizuno’s & they looked like the model that I wear, so I was trying to discretely see if they were the next generation of my current shoes, but I couldn’t tell without being a total creeper… I was going to ask but I just felt weird asking her about her shoes so I will have to look online. They were really cute & pink so I am hoping they are the next Wave Riders!
I’m the same way. I have, however, gotten better about shopping and such (waiting for a sale, etc), but when it comes to other things - I have no patience. But, great find on the shoes!
I am pretty sure that we are called the “now generation” … or well the people a generation below us … but it is rubbing off on us too. We have so much at our fingertips because of the internets that we do expect everything now. I find that I am the same way!
girl- do your research before you go spending money!!!
I hope you enjoy your new shoes!
I do this to myself all the time. I make impulsive purchases and then find out the item went on sale a week later. At least you were able to get a good deal in the end!
I think we’ve all been there! I’ve totally done something like this as well. I’m the most impatient person ever! I mean seriously, if anyone makes my LDR hard its me… I’m always like “is it March 3rd yet?” Poor Spike. LOL!
some people will actually buy two pairs of running shoes at the same time just so you can rotate and wear them evenly. since the shoes change every year it makes the buying process much easier. I did that last year and only wore those 2 pairs, where if i had tried to buy the second pair halfway through the year the model might have changed by then. as much as i love shoes, running shoes can be frustrating. i hate the running shoes i have now but can’t find the ones from last year anymore.
I can relate, Amber! I get really impatient about things, too, and when I want something I want it now, pronto, instantly!
But I can’t do that with shoe shopping right now–I started my Year of No Shopping. Maybe as a side benefit, I will learn patience? I mean, I have to wait a whole year to buy anything new & cute!
I’m an instant gratification person as well.
It’s not quite the same but when Glee Season 1 came out, I went to THREE Targets just so I could find one where they had it in stock. I know, a little pathetic but oh well. I wanted that season. I will shop around for big things and sit on it for a bit but I usually wind up buying what I want.
I will have to get some advice from you & Lisa D with regards to running shoes. I plan to go to a specialty store soon to get more info, but it doesn’t hurt to have first hand advice from Running Ladies like yourself
Patience is a really hard thing! I definitely don’t have it when it comes to something I want or if I am going somewhere. Oh well, hopefully you learned something from that experience
I’m eerily similar. When I want something, I want it NOW. For me, I blame it on the fact that I grew up in the “microwave” aka “instant gratification” generation.
In any case, it’s fun when it all works out anyway. You got what you wanted, at a very reasonable price. (With the added bonus of a story to tell.)
NICE WORK! I return things quite often if I can get them less expensive elsewhere. Running shoes are so expensive and so specialized - ya gotta scoop up deals when you can.
And hey - think of all the exercise you got whilst “running around”!
My trouble is I hate all the running around…waste of time. I’m not so impatient that I have to have it now; I just know what I want (loyal to the brand) and go where I know I’ll get it (loyal to the store).
So Lady Foot Locker was Canadian? Just asking if you paid $123 CAD or $123 US? Granted, the exchange isn’t ugly like it was in the past, but still.
I also like the idea of two pairs to rotate. If you train on the Running Room website, it will actually track your mileage, so it would be nice to have two pairs to alternate for those long distances.
Haha, I read all about your exploits in getting new shoes on Twitter and felt so bad for you. But yay for finding the best deal (even though it was later than you wanted it!) and also big yay for Asics. I use those, too!
I can’t believe they are $199 at your running store!!! Versus a mere $109 online - ahhh! Hopefully you’ll shop online from now on
ha, geeeze.
At least you saved money in the end - that’s all that matters!
i’m SO that girl that checks every possible option before buying something. my sister calls it ‘being cheap’ I say frugal
either way any time I buy something and see it cheaper somewhere else within 30 days I totally return it…or ask for a price match.
I think all that running around was worth it - I would have definitely done the same thing. & look how much you saved!
Me and the word patience don’t belong in the same sentence. I have none - not for anything. I don’t have the patience to save money either, so I would have just kept the first pair.
Wow, that’s a huge difference! I definitely would have taken them back, too. I usually don’t worry about it, but if it’s worth it, I will!
I am a non think buyer too …. shopping around is key!
I really should do more shopping around, but sometimes I just don’t want to!
I will, however, take something back if I find it cheaper elsewhere. It’s gotta be huge savings though! I won’t bother for $1 or so. I guess that’s the frugal Asianness in me! The white girl in me just likes to spend though. I guess it all balances out in the end.
Hi there,
I don’t really do much commenting on blogs but have been a reader of yours for a while now. Anyway, I live in Canada as well and tried to check out the lady footlocker website for free shipping but it was only within the US, how did you find the free shipping to Canada? I think it sounds like a great deal so if I can do it too then I will! Thanks for any help!
OOOO thanks for letting me know about the shoes! now i have to go buy some at Lady Foot Locker! and seriously, what is it about the asics? i have those right now, and need a new pair, but I never thought anything of them until Blog Boy goes on and on about those shoes…and then it just made me feel cool…so now I need a new pair, bc i think the last time i bought running shoes, was….well, crap, i can’t remember…
Ok, that is totally me. To a Tee. We should start a support group.
The stammering and blushing? Yah, I had to endure that on Saturday afternoon. You’d think at some point I would learn my lesson, but no.
I will need new running shoes soon, so I’ve already started trolling through websites. I’m hoping that since they have just released a new version of my shoes (mizuno inspires) I might be able to scoop up the previous version on the cheap!
I am the exact same way! When I want something I can’t stop thinking about it until I have it. Something I have been trying to work on for a long time!
Oh my god, I am TOTALLY the same way. It’s really a terrible habit. I like to shop around online but I don’t like to wait at all, so if they have it in a store for more but I don’t have to wait, I’ll probably buy it. Not a good habit. Definitely going to get my second dose of Amber today!
LOL what a story about the shoes!!! Patience is pretty non-existent with me, too. A work in progress
I am SO impatient. It’s more like impatience when it comes to waiting in lines, but I’m really bad at shopping around too.
I laughed out loud when I read your post because it sounds exactly like something I would do
LOL, that sounds like something I would get myself into. Check out http://www.runningwarehouse.com/ next time you need shoes. They are by far the cheapest place I have ever found for shoes.
*Check out my 2 great giveaways going on now - yoga mat bag cover and beauty kit @ MonicaOnTheGo.com*
not bad!!! 3 pairs of shoes for 500! good think your a saver and can fork over 500 easily on shoes! you ROCK
I’m similar. When I want something new, I want it NOW. Not 2 weeks from now. I’m slowly learning patience because I’m also cheap and love a good sale
You are too funny! I once bought three pairs of the same shoe…they were different colors though so I didn’t return them.
So funny - I’m the same way. Most of all when it comes to buying something. When I decide that I want something, well, I’m going to get it, and NOW. lol!!! I’m glad you ended up getting good shoes at a good price, but I have to say your story made me laugh so much
I don’t know that I would’ve exchanged them because I tend to give up on stuff like that…
Hope you enjoy your new shoes
