10 Things in 2010

by MissAmber on January 7, 2010 · 29 comments

in 10 in 2010, exercise, goals, holidays, money, running

These aren’t my “resolutions”, these are ten things that are going to happen in 2010!

Some are obvious (graduating) some are already planned/booked (Europe), some are going to be difficult to measure! This list has been printed and posted on the fridge and I’m determined to achieve all 10 things in 2010!

Personal:

1. Graduate from University

Like I said - an obvious one, but it ain’t over till it’s over and once I achieve this it will be huge for me. I went to University straight out of high school so I cannot wait to just have my degree and be done with school for a bit (I know, I know, I’ll miss it, but you know what, when you’ve gone to school full-time for 17 years straight it’s time for a little break!)

2. Go to Europe

Planned, happening unless something unforeseen happens. Can’t freaking wait. Give me advice about traveling to Europe here.

3. Begin to support myself

For the last four years my parents have been supporting me. They’ve been paying my rent (while I go to school) and paying my school fees. Well, guess what? I’m done school in four months and will need to become a real “grown-up” and start supporting myself.

I’m so lucky to be graduating debt-free and there’s no way I’m going to mess that up by making stupid choices and going into unnecessary debt! While the idea of completely supporting myself for basically the first time ever (only done it for four months at a time in the summer before) is scary I think it will be very liberating!

4. Stop worrying about things I can’t change and things that haven’t happened yet

I’m just a big, fat worry-wart about everything. It needs to stop. In 2010 I want to be more Zen. Why stress about something that’s already happened and I can’t change it? Why stress about something that hasn’t even happened yet? This will be hard to measure but I really want to work on being more calm and not worrying about things I have no control over!

5. Save more money/Get finances in order

I’m actually really quite good with money but I want to be better. I want to have more money in savings and quit wasting money on useless things. Also, now that I will no longer be in school I want to open an RRSP and start saving for big, future purchases. Like a house.

On another note, I also don’t want money to hold me back. I’ve been known to pass up fun things in the past because of how much they cost. I want to be smart with my money but on the same hand I work hard for it and I deserve to treat myself and have fun.

Health/Fitness:

6. Continue to maintain the weight loss I’ve kept off for the last two years

And maybe, maybe even lose that last 10 pounds. Ya, that’d be nice. I’ve also been participating in Anais’ no-sugar challenge for the last week - it’s going so-so, I will recap it next week! My ultimate goal is to gain control of my sweet tooth.

7. Keep running, keep racing

I want to run a sub two-hour half-marathon. I am doing another half in Kelowna on March 28 so I’m training hard and I really hope to come in under two hours. I want to do more small, local races this year - 10k’s, 5k’s etc. And finally, I plan on training for and competing in a triathlon of some sort (probably a sprint one).

8. Run a full marathon

This is my major health/fitness goal for 2010. In the fall I plan on running a full marathon with Lisa (more details to come) and I’m really excited about!

Training will start in June but until then I want to build up a solid base so I’m currently logging 20-30 miles a week in preparation for full training.

9. Do more yoga/learn to meditate

I think this will really tie into my personal goal of being less stressed and anxious. I am really starting to love yoga (the more I do it the more I seem to love it) and I want to keep my practice up and improve. I also want to spend at least 10 minutes, 3 times a week meditating. I’ve started by spending a few minutes focusing on my breath before falling asleep.

10. Become a flexitarian

I don’t see myself giving up meat anytime soon but it is not necessary for me to eat it every day. But I would like to get to the point where I am only eating meat 3-4 times per week. Maximum. So far I’m doing good. I didn’t have meat today or yesterday!

I did pretty well on my goals from 2009 (will review next week) so I hope I do well with these too! What’s on your “to-do” list for 2010?

Have a good weekend! XO

our personal goals are very similar, except for I’m not going to Europe :( I think I might start doing yoga. I have been to a couple classes and I loved them and I have a couple yoga DVDs that are currently collecting dust. I think it’s time to brush them off and put them to use!

I’m excited for you going to Europe after school. That will be lots of fun, you’ll have to keep up your blog somehow and post lots of pictures!

I have not yet attempted yoga. I have a stack of pilates DVDs gathering dust, does that count? ;)
I can’t wait to hear about your training for the full, I’m inspired… yet so, so scared to even think about a marathon! that’s such an amazing accomplishment :)

Those are some great goals to have, good for you Amber. I’m definately with you on the yoga and looking into (cheapish) classes if you’re interested :)

i absolutely have to print my list out.

Strange but i absolutely have no desire to attempt a full marathon mostly because I just don’t see the thrill in putting myself through that much pain. On the other hand, I have too much going on in terms of wedding stuff, i don’t think i’d ever have time! but i’ll be right there cheering you along!

Being a flexitarian is actually easier than you think. You will get a whole lot more creative with what you make. however, it kinda makes going out to eat sucks - but the plus side, you save money because you know you’ll make better food than if you ate out!

Can’t wait to train & run a mararthon with you! :) Will be so fun!

This is a great set of goals. I like that you phrased them as things that WILL happen and not as ‘resolutions’. My 30 before 30 list is kind of the same thing - it’s not a list of things I’d like to do - it’s a list of things that WILL happen.

Graduating from uni is one of those things that, even though you *know* it’s going to happen, you don’t actually believe until it’s happened. And then it’s like: wow, I actually did it!

By the way, thanks for the link you left in the comment on my blog - I’ve been looking for ages online and not found much. It’s really useful.

#4 is the best decision ever and I can already tell you 2010 will be amazing because of it!! :)

2010 is going to be a great year for you! Graduating from University debt free is an awesome, what a great gift from your parents. The other things on your list, I know you will accomplish. Having a positive attitude is key.

I definitely only eat meat 3-4 times per week at the most. I eat a lot of beans :) and some veggie pizza w. no cheese. I would never give up meat completely but it’s much cheaper and often easier to cook it less.

I love that you and Lisa want to run a marathon together!
Oh and I also love that you want to do a sprint tri, I loved loved loved doing mine!

Yay! Good luck…I really need to stop worrying about things I can’t control too!

I’m hopefully going to be supporting myself financially as well by the end of the year - and wouldn’t that be great!!

I’m definitely considering the full marathon as well… It’s a little scary, but I guess I won’t achieve anything unless I scare myself a bit once in a while and step out of my comfort zone :P

I am definitely a Flexitarian … I have no problem eating veggie most days of the week. It is all about finding new good recipes that are vegetarian.

Good luck with everything! I’m not making any resolutions either, but I may have to borrow this idea for the future.

There are quite a few of us in this blog-world that have the “full” on our agenda for 2010!! It’ll be fun to read all the training stories/advice/etc :)

I love that you say things that *will* happen - not resolutions. Goood attitude, lady!

I mostly eat chicken and fish, with a very rare pork (had it last night, but can’t remember the last time I had it) and no beef (well, except for Christmas Eve dinner, but that was the first time in, like, 5 years I’ve had it. maybe longer). But I’m planning to do a week of vegetarianism next week as part of my 101 Things goals. I’m looking forward to it, actually! I might do it once a week every month, just to mix things up.

Your other goals are great. I am *terrible* with money and racked up a lot of debt but I also live in the most expensive city in the U.S. so yeah, it’s tricky. I didn’t have any credit card debt in college, so all of this basically came from just moving and not having enough saved, so I put it on my credit card. And then a few other things, thinking I could pay it off. But then I couldn’t… and yeah. Just don’t even start.

All great goals, Amber. I am often a flexitarian. Meat just is not a priority for me. It helps when you love so many dishes that don’t need meat to make them taste great! And you can get protein from so many sources!

awesome! i’m not sure what i’m more excited about; you running a full marathon, running a full marathon with Lisa (love her!!!) or diving into triathlons. all incredible!

i do the flexitarian thing too, but it’s mostly by habit more than choice. i’m not forcing myself to give up meat, but typically i just choose the veg option. if I want a cheesburger (like last night) i’ll get one by God. But most of the time I only want veg & tofu.

your list is all quite achievable! including graduation and being fully self supportive. that was very important to me as well when i graduated.

That’s the tough part- balancing enjoying and making the most of life, with saving for the future.
Good luck with your goals!

I prefer goals to resolutions too - I never seem to follow through with resolutions but I’m pretty good with goals :) I know what you mean about being anxious to be done school, though I took a year off after uni and went right back. If I had the money I”d always be in school …

I love being a ‘flexitarian’! I can generally get away with two vegetarian dinners/week with AB and make at least one more vegetarian for me (but add meat for him). I very much enjoy eating meat only a few times a week but want to start trying to buy organic and biodynamic meat too. I do need to eat more seafood though (it’s just $ and I have to go out of my way to get it)

I’m also aiming to graduate this year, but towards the end of it so I think 2011 will be my year to become independent and a grown-up! ;)

Great list and good luck with your list. I remember the day I gave my parents their gas card back and became financially independent. It felt great.

2010 is going to be an amazing year, and I cannot wait to read about all of your adventures!

Becoming financially independent, while scary, is one of the BEST feelings in the world.
