POM Wonderful

I’ve seen lots of talk of POM Wonderful around the blogosphere, as I’m sure you have. So when Janny contacted me and asked if she could send me a POM care package, of course I said YES!

My care package arrived a few weeks ago and included fourPOM Wonderful juice coupons and a two-page document that had some interesting facts about POM juice.

I didn’t have a chance to use my coupons until this past weekend when I picked up a bottle of Blueberry-Pomegranate juice and a bottle of Cherry-Pomegranate juice.

Apparently POM juice has more antioxidants then red wine. Who woulda thought?

I found the juice a bit tart when I drank it by itself. But, I mixed the blueberry pomegranate juice, along with some fresh blueberries, almond milk, 1/2 a banana and some strawberry yogurt to make a blueberry smoothie the other day and It was SO GOOD. Hands down the best blueberry smoothie I’ve ever made!

I just started reading Julie & Julia so I was in the mood to cook on Monday night. I’ve had a rack of lamb in my freezer forever so I thought now would be the perfect chance to make it. I took a look at all the recipes on POM Wonderful’s website and decided on this recipe since  I already had all the ingredients at home.

I donned my apron – channeling my inner Julia or Julie, whatever you prefer - and got to work.

I diced up the carrots and onions with my biggest knife. You should know that I’m terrible at cutting things and when I was peeling potatoes for Eric’s birthday a few years ago I sliced part of the tip of my pointy finger off and had to get seven stitches. I was being very careful during my dicing.

I then got all my ingredients ready for the sauce; 1 cup POM juice, 1/2 cup broth and 5-6 oz of tomato paste.

ingredients

The recipe called for me to bring the sauce to a boil and then let it simmer, uncovered, for 10 minutes. It splattered everywhere. How do you let something like that simmer without splattering? I was at a loss!

sauce

Of course, I sipped on some red wine while I cooked; Jackson Triggs Merlot. Jackson Triggs is a BC wine, grown in the Okanagan – only a few hours away from me!

I will spare you the photos of the lamb chops before they were cooked. It was not pretty. But I will tell you this was one of the best meals I have ever made. After the lamb chops cooked I put them on top of some whole-wheat pasta and then spooned the sauce over the lamb chops and the pasta. I had roasted brussel sprouts on the side and the rest of my red wine.

OMG, SO SO good. If you like lamb chops I definitely recommend this recipe!

I still have two more POM Wonderful coupons left to try more juice with but in the future I don’t think I would buy it for something to drink. I would, however, buy it to use in recipes and smoothies!

Have you tried POM Wonderful juice? What did you think? Any other great recipe ideas that I could try with it?

I am so impressed that you made this – it looks awesome! And you look totally cute in that apron. :)

uh.. I wouldn’t even attempt to deal with lamb! so go Amber! the sauce does sound amazing. Tomato type based sauces is quite difficult to let simmmer without spattering, but literally put it on the lowest possible setting, and that’s simmering. or just let it make a mess. I always tell my niece, a messy cook is a good cook! =)

HOLY that looks good! Julie & Julia is on my reading list – now I feel bad, because after I saw the movie I promised David I was going to cook him something elaborate from an actual recipe book at least once a month, feeling all inspired – and I haven’t made one! :(

Hooray for brussels – I’ve never met anyone else who actually makes them voluntarily :)

I’ve never seen POM juice, but that lamb looks looks fantastic! (I also have to be incredibly careful when chopping.)

That dinner looks delish even for a vegetarian, and you look adorable in that apron. Very chic.

As far as the juice goes, I find them tart as well but mix in a little club soda with them for some fizzy toned down juice. I wonder if it could be reduced (basalmic vineger style) and drizzled over veg? Just a thought.

Never tried POM but your recipe looks great!

On another note, where did you get your purple shirt? It looks very nice on you!

Woah that looks delicious!! I have to say though I don’t drink juice… I find it too sweet. I’d rather have a piece of chocolate for those calories ;)

ps: I love Jackson Triggs!! Had no idea it was so close to you, that’s awesome! (actually, silly me, I think I thought it was an Ontario wine. oops!)

I’m not a pomegranate fan. I’m not sure I’d like POM. :p

Okay, first thing – Your dinner looks amazing! My mouth is watering. I should learn how to cook lamb at home because while it’s delicious, I don’t like the mint that’s always added to it in restaurants.

Second – POM Wonderful is exactly that! I may have to pick some up today. I quite like how it doesn’t make a mess like actual pomegranates. I had those seeds all over the floor last weekend.

May I come over for dinner next time? That looks divine! I’ve never tried POM juice mostly because I’m not sure I’d be allergic to it but I have heard good things about it! =) I bet Eric loves the fact that you cook and cook so well.
You totally rock the apron look, by the way.

Wow you are so ambitious!! Good job! That meal looks really yummy.

To control the splattering of the sauce, you need to go find a splatter guard. It’s like a round piece of screen or mesh with a handle and it fits over your pot. You could probably easily find one at a thrift store (if you don’t mind used kitchen items) or someplace like Target.

That looks so delicious! I wouldn’t even know how to begin cooking lamb so major props to you!

I’ve never tried POM juice but have seen it around. I’m not a big juice fan, though, so I’m not sure if I’d like it. Your smoothie, though, looked so good!!

That smoothie looks awesome!!! I’ve had Pom and it can be pretty tart on its own. If you cut it with other juices it really helps.

I bought the same two flavors!!!

I have never had lamb, but I would love to try making it sometime…the recipe sounds good!

I love the apron pic! I like POM when I’m feeling low and need some extra antioxidants. I usually feel like it’s pretty concentrated and expensive so I rarely get it, but it does taste yummy! I like that you used it in a recipe rather than simply drinking it conventionally.

Wow – I am impressed!! I am such a chicken in the kitchen – the thought of making lampchops is really intimidating! Good for you – they look fantastic!!

I haven’t tried POM yet but everyone who gets to sample it for free seems to love it so I should give it a try!

I’ve heard tons about POM Wonderful as well, but I’ve found the juice to be a little tart as well.
Putting it in smoothies is a great idea. I sometimes use a splash of OJ, but I think I’ll try that next time!

YUM! That looks amazing. I have no idea if POM is sold in Oz but I think it might be?

I am so not a juice drinker, never was, never will be. However I do enjoy a splash of POM mixed into my soda water for a bit of flavour. Using it in a smoothie also sounds good. I enjoy eating pomegranates though so I should pick some up for Christmas!

I just bought POM juice today (well, it is Thursday now, so technically, yesterday)! the original, 100 percent pomegranate juice. I am using it in a cocktail that I’m making for Thanksgiving! I have never drank the POM juice but I know it is very concentrated. the way you used it looks great though. I’ve never had lamb chops, but that sauce would probably be good with other meat, don’t you think? and I love that you ate brussel sprouts! they are such a forgotten, cast-off vegetable! :) but I’ve always liked them and roasting makes all veggies taste better!

anyway, back to POM, I wanted to mention that I love their teas. I love the blackberry one and the peach one is pretty good too.

I love eating lamb, but cooking it intimidates me a little. Hopefully, you’ll inspire me enough to actually try to make it myself! Because your plate does look really delicious.
