Happy Birthday, Webster!

in Kamloops, Webster, amber and eric, happiness, pets

Well, it’s not *actually* his birthday. But a year ago (I don’t remember the exact date, unfortunately) Eric and I drove over to the North Shore, down a creepy back alley in the dark and a man handed a tiny, orange kitten over to us. Anyone who saw us probably would have thought we were dealing drugs.

It was three days before Halloween 2008.

This is the back story - I had been in Kamloops about eight weeks and Eric had been here about four. We were both homesick and Eric was bored. He was unemployed at the time and spent all day home alone while I was at school. We were in Petland looking at the animals one day, which we do often by the way, and we saw a cute orange kitten. Eric said that if we got that kitten he would name it Webster. Even though we weren’t *technically* supposed to have animals in our building (other people do) we were all geared up to buy this kitten until we found out how much he cost.

$200! Umm, no.

So we went home, feeling a bit disappointed, and I scoured Craigslist for kittens. Sure enough there was an ad by a woman that had two little kittens, one female and one male, the male had six toes on each of his front paws. Oh, and they were free.

I called her up and she only had the boy kitten left, so me and Eric talked about, decided to go for it and the next night we made the drive in the dark to get our new kitty.

I had no idea how much I would fall in love with Webster. At first he was just this adorable little kitten but he quickly grew to become a member of our family. He was so playful and cuddly and absolutely hilarious. We loved him right away.

Since Eric moved away, Webster has been a HUGE comfort for me. Honestly, just knowing that there is another living thing in the apartment makes me feel so much better and it’s nice to have someone to cuddle with still. And, yes, I do talk to him. Quite regularly actually.

I’ve always been an animal person but I leaned more towards dogs than cats. I would have never described myself as a cat person before I got Webster. I think that once you get a pet when it’s a baby and actually take care of it and watch it grow, it can change your whole outlook on pets and animals in general. I love cats now and I can’t imagine my life without Webby in it.

Here’s some pictures of my little monkey as he’s grown up:

This was the same night we got him, he was so small!

He would squeeze himself into the tiniest spaces…

…and still does

He LOVED sleeping on Eric.

And on my desk..

Even when he got a little too big for it..

So big he has to stretch onto me to fit! (This was taken last night)

He always looks out the window at me when I leave in the morning and it pretty much breaks my heart every time.

This is my favourite picture of him, ever, I think he looks SO handsome here

Do you have pets? What kind? Do you LOVE them?

PS: I’ve been meaning to point you towards, my friend, Danielle’s blog for awhile. She is in the J-program with me at TRU and is originally from Newfoundland. I know, right? Anyways, her blog is over here and is pretty fab, so go say hello!

Oh he is just adorable!! What a sweet kitty.

I do not have any pets… I can’t keep a plant alive so am worried about how an animal would do in my house! Also, I am allergic to cats, so it’s not an option. Sometimes I wish I had a dog, but if I had a dog, I’d want one that I could run w/ & that would mean having a bigger dog - which is forbidden in my condo association. The max weight is 25 lbs. But sometimes I do really wish I had a dog like Charlotte has on Sex and the City. It would be nice to have some companionship.

That cat is adorable! I want a cat, but I’m thinking we probably shouldn’t… Anyways, we have 2 dogs (used to have 3, but one was put down this summer). One is a Golden Retriever named Bear and the other is a Jack Russell named Rocky. They are the best dogs ever. So.Sweet.

Oh, he is so handsome! He was so adorable when he was a kitten.

As you know, I haven’t had Loki for a while, but he’s already my “baby.” I didn’t think I could ever grow so attached to a kitten, but I’m in love. He likes to look out the window when we leave, too, and it’s heartbreaking!

i love cats! especially friendly ones, but not too friendly! I actually find that with the 2 male cats in our family — never ever again if we can help it! my parents have zeke (orange) and zoey (black). they definitely have their quirks. I usually let my parents leave the cats with us if they’re on vacation or something. but zeke can prove to be pretty problematic! My younger sister adopted cally (calico) she’s the one we grew up with, and seriously this cat is as light as a feather, though she doesn’t look like it - she’s very sweet, but likes to be left alone. then there’s neptune who started out as my cat (sort of) then my younger sister took him to college. he is seriously a mean cat! though he’s softened up cuz of my niece. Ha. he’s still mean though! thus — i’ll only have female animals! but i really want a dog more than anything! so i have a running partner!

Omg those pictures of Webster make my heart MELT! HE is sooooo adorable :) I love orange cats, if I wasn’t allergic I think I would get one :) If I could I would totally get a dog right now… Have you had to pay much for vet costs? That’s one of the things I worry about in regards to me not getting one just yet :(

That makes me want a cat so badly! We have two dogs who I absolutely adore, but unfortunately they don’t get along with cats. You’re so right about having another living thing in the house. When I’m at home alone I feel so much better having my dogs there with me!

Jack does the look out the window thing when I leave. Breaks my heart every single time. When I’m out for long periods of time he sits on the love seat in the living room and stares out the window, presumably waiting for me to get home. My mom sends me lots of pictures of him doing this with funny little captions. At Irish’s house he always stood in the window to watch me/us leave. So cute and so sad at the same time.

Webster is an adorable and handsome cat. I’m allergic to cats so I have to stick to dogs but I hear great things about cats as well! Happy birthday Webster!

Heh, I think it is well established that I have pets. :) The run down is two dogs, two cats, two rats (starting to feel like Noah over here) … and five foster babies that are just here until they get adopted. And yes, they are treated as family.

I looove Webster!! Congrats on your year of love with your kitty! He reminds me so much of my Bentley! I got Bentley on September 25th 3 years ago now (he was 2 when I got him) and I wish I knew his real birthday, too.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY WEBSTER!!!

I do the same…I kind of forget about my animals ACTUAL birthdays (BOTH of our cats were born on July 4th though 4 years apart!) but I always remember when we first got them!!

We got our first kitten (Mikka, grey and white) pretty much for the same reasons you did. Though I was unemployed and Danny was in University…but she was NOT a cuddly cat (though she did a lot of cute stuff!!!). We DID buy her from a pet store though…but she was $65 (because she was getting “old” like 10 weeks or something???)

Anyway, then we got our puppy Charlie when we moved into our trailer last year. It was something that I thought went hand in hand with owning a house. I am definitely more of a cat person, but I definitely wanted a puppy. Boy did I have my hands full!!!

AND THEN. We bought our new house last fall, and the thought of so much space and only 2 animals - that’s when we picked up the other kitten (Nico, orange tabby) and I think he completed the family!!! He is super loving and cuddly but also super playful…

I can’t imagine my life without these little buggers!!! And yes, I have my fair share of “conversations” with them as well!!!!
Sorry for the super long comment!!! I just got reminiscing!!!

“Baby Love” is my cat! She was living under my house for about 2 months before we discovered she had no claws and was spayed! So, we took her into our home. I love that cat SO much, it’s kind of ridiculous!

Abigail and Lenny are my pups and they’re more like kids!! They are the little loves of my life! They go pretty much every allowable place they can with us and they ALWAYS know how to make me smile! Abigail is a cavalier king charles spaniel(she cost $1500….crazy high amount, but totally worth it) and Lenny is a border collie/blue heeler mix(he cost $100)! No amount of money can describe the happiness these two bring me!

I miss cats! I wish I could have one in my building, but I’m too scared to try to sneak a kitten in (eviction would be very very very bad for me). However, once I am finished school, then one of the first things my husband and I want to do is get two little kittens.

PS- My kitten had blues eyes for awhile, but they too turned yellow when she started growing up :( sad, the blue eyes are so cute!

Oh we WISH that we had a kitten - or any animal. We just move around so very much that it would be just awful for whatever we brought into our lives. So instead we have houseplants. sad, right?

Can’t imagine a single day without my fur-babies, Coco and Giorgio! I found mine in an odd way as well…I had just moved out on my own (no more roommates!) and decided I needed cats right away. After all, I have never lived without a cat - ever! So during the move, I made my daily trip to Walmart to pick up this and that, and after 6 or 7 days of this, I decided I was making my last trip to Walmart. In order to not have to go back, I picked up everything I would need for a cat(s) to be ready - I was a Girl Guide, after all. The cashier asked what kind of cats I had, since I was buying litter, boxes, dishes, toys, etc, and I said I didn’t have any yet - those were to come. She mentioned her cat recently had kittens…oh, ears perked up - how many left? Two…sold! Don’t you want to see what they look like? Nope…they’re kittens, right? How bad can they be? Turns out I got the two Tuxedo kittens, brother and sister, and Giorgio (Armani, thank you very much) inherited the extra toe from his mother (she had them on her front paws), one extra on each foot, while his sister Coco (Chanel - could have seen that one coming) does not. I love my little Hemingway boy (Hemingway was given a kitten with the extra toes, and he loved it so, he made sure to continue the trait and left a house, in New Orleans I think, to all the surviving cats, as long as they had the extra toes!) and his sister so much.
And Happy Birthday Webster!! So cute!!!

Awww, he’s so cute! I love animals and can’t imagine not having one. My family as a Golden Retriever, Sandy, and she is the ultimate baby of the family. Shes spoiled, doesn’t realize she is a dog, and absolutely adorable. Her birthday was a few weeks ago and I baked her peanut butter (her favorite) cupcakes.

oh my goodness! this is just the cutest post ever! totally made me smile. the way you talk about Webster is how I feel about Hazel. and even though Webster is a cat, and Hazel is a dog, they kind of have them same zany/cuddly personality! Hazel just last week figured out how to crawl under out bed and a few days later, how to crawl under the TV stand. it’s pretty hilarious. And just today Hazel was lying on my wrist while I was typing!

And I LOVE it when I see Hazel looking out the sliding glass door to watch me leave or see me come home. It breaks my heart in the best way, too!

Well, Happy Birthday Webster!! You have a great mommy that loves you so and you are just as cute as can be!

Happy Birthday Webster! We found our cat Perry around Halloween as well, so we “celebrate” on the 31st. You are so right, especially when you are living alone, having another living being in the house makes everything so much better!

Webster is so cute!

I’m more of a dog person but I’m just an all-around animal lover! It’s nice to come home to someone waiting for you and to have them when you’re home alone. My dog tends to act like a jealous boyfriend when I’m around other people but I love him. He’s a cuddle monster so it’s cute. :)

Happy birthday, Webster!

Happy birthday Webster! Awww, I love how much you love Webster! I had never had a totally inside pet until I moved out on my own with John and we adopted Winnie cat and then Charlie cat a year later. It seems like you develop a much closer relationship with animals when they’re around you every single second you’re home. I think that might be the reason my cats act more like dogs … they like to be in whatever room we’re in, Charlie begs for table scraps and they seem to be sad when we leave them on vacay. And you’re totally right — when John is gone on a business trip or whatever, it’s so nice having Winnie and Charlie as company. And yes, I definitely talk to my cats too! And as you know, now we have Abbie too! Webster is such a cutie pie … he was sooo small when he was a baby! Sooo cute! Reminds me of when my fat orange cat was a tiny one! I love the pictures of him squeezing into the tiny spaces … and of course, Webster saying goodbye by looking through the blinds. So precious. Oh, and that’s fun he has extra toes! He’s a special young man!
