Q & A: Travel and Trips

by MissAmber on July 30, 2009 · 16 comments

in Canada, camping

Today I’m going to answer some questions that I was asked about travelling and trips! Lisa asked me what my favourite city is in Canada? What the best vacation I’ve ever taken is and if I could go on vacation, anywhere in the world, where would I go?

OK, I’ll start by saying - I’m not a very good Canadian because I’ve only ever been to three provinces: British Columbia, Alberta and Saskatchewan (western provinces). And I’ve only ever spent significant amounts of time in British Columbia and Alberta. In my defence, Canada is freaking huge! One day I plan on visiting my entire country, though.

So, I guess my favourite city in Canada right now would have to be Vancouver. I always say that I love Vancouver and then when I go there it stresses me out like there’s no tomorrow (really hard to drive in/navigate, HUGE, lots of slummy areas) BUT when it comes right down to it you can’t get much better than having a city that has the ocean on one side of it and mountains on the other side. It’s truly a beautiful city with a lot of interesting culture! All of my favourite cities/areas are in BC though. I’m probably biased since I live here and have grown up here, but BC is a really, really beautiful province! There are so many lakes and mountains, it’s right along the ocean, it has islands (Vancouver Island and the Queen Charlotte Islands). Our license plates here say “Beautiful British Columbia” on them and they are so right. It’s a gorgeous place and I feel very lucky to live here! (For some pics of mine and Eric’s vacay in the mountains a few weeks ago, go here).

Best vacation ever: I have a few for different reasons. The only international vacations I’ve ever been on is when we went to Disneyland almost four years ago and when me and my brother travelled to Germany last summer. Germany was definitely a very cultural vacation. I LOVED seeing all of the old architecture and being around people who spoke a different language. It was an amazing experience and it gave my travel bug a little taste of international travel, which only made him more hungry!

Some of the best vacations I’ve ever had have been simple ones; when Eric and I travelled to Hazelton, BC in the summer of 2007 for his sisters wedding (photo below), family vacations to Penticton, BC for hockey school - staying in a house right on the lake/beach, weekends away camping, Torwood Lodge; those kinds of things. Any kind of vacation is a good one for me, I like the relaxing kinds where you lay on the beach and sleep, I like the busy kinds where you’re going-going-going and I like the cultural kinds where your sightseeing. I just like to travel and do things in general!

In Hazelton, two summers ago, where I learned that fishing can actually be really fun (Erics sister and brother-in-law are avid fisherpeople, their whole wedding was fishing-themed)

Finally, if I could go anywhere in the world on vacation, where would I go? This is a tough one because there are SO many places I’d like to go. BUT I think my ultimate vacation would be an African Safari!!! The people we stayed with in Germany went on one for Christmas 2007 and they said it was amazing! They saw all kinds of wild animals and had a great time. Those kinds of vacations are pricey - but if I can help it, I will be going on one, one day! Except right now, with this heat, I think I’d like to go on vacation to Alaska!

OK, your turn: What is your favourite city in your country and/or state/province? What is the best vacation you’ve ever taken? If you could go on vacation, anywhere in the world, where would you go?

hmm don’t feel bad. the US is huge too! and I’ve only been as far as texas and oklahoma. I know! but i’ve pretty much been to all the east coast & mid west states. Favorite city in the entire country would have to be nyc though i would never live there ever ever again. it’s great to visit and there’s all kinds of stuff to do there and explore. but right now i’m loving living in the DC area (only people who aren’t from the area call it washington dc).

Best vacation?! that 6 week tour of europe. ahmazing!

anywhere in the world — australia and new zealand!

I am the same way - I really haven’t seen that much of the US either. Now that I am trying to save up for a downpayment on a house, my trips will probably all be within the US. It’s so hard to pick my favorite city in the US, but I think I will have to go with NYC. I had an amazing time there in April. There is so much energy in that city and it is fun to just wander through the streets (with a starbucks latte in hand, of course). Esp in the West Village.

The best vacation of my life thus far was my 3 week trip to France last year. I loved Paris!! Also loved Annecy where i Spent a weekend. If/when I get married, I’d love to go back there for my honeymoon!

If I could go anywhere in the world, I would probably go back to New Zealand. I spent a week there when I was studying abroad & loved it. It’s so pricey to get there & it’s such a long flight, though, so I don’t know when I’ll be in the position to go back- some day though!!

A safari would also be very cool!!

I’ve never been to BC :(

My favorite city in Canada thus far has got to be Montreal. It is just a beautiful place to visit!

I have always itched to explore the Yukon. Some day!

Hmmm, my favorite city in my country is probably Philly. I just love living here. My best vacation obviously just happened- Europe <3

my favorite place that i have been must be milwaukee wisconsin. the people there are amazingly nice, and the weather is great (compared to SC) and there is so much to do! I’ve been up there twice for work, and loved it both times. internationally i want to see italy but i’ve never had the chance to go.

My favorite city, that I’ve already traveled to in my country would be Chicago. Tons of fun, love the architecture, sight seeing and the hole in the wall places you can find. Though, I’m sure as soon as I ever get to New York City that answer will change. My favorite city in my state would be Lansing, and I would be biased because I went to Michigan State and East Lansing/Lansing is one of the MOST fun places ever to be a 20 something in my opinion. However, best vacation town in my state would be Traverse City. It is up north, on Lake Michigan, tons of wineries, camping spots and just amazingly beautiful. My favorite vacation generally involves a beach. I think my favorite was my honeymoon in Ocho Rios, Jamaica. I’ve also had a lot of fun in Ft. Myers, FL. Also, our trip to Toronto was a lot of fun too. It was fun exploring another city/country. If I could travel anywhere, I would like to go to Italy! Or Ireland. But Italy tops my list. I would love to speak Italian.

Best Canadian city I’ve vacationed in: FUN-couver!! Although Quebec City was also fun. I really want to do a cross country road trip but it’s tough to get that much time off work. Maybe I’ll have to break it into a few pieces….

Best vacation by FAR was my six week trip to Africa to celebrate my 30th birthday! I went on safari for two weeks through Kenya and Tanzania, climbed Kilimanjaro, then cycled around the Western Cape of South Africa. I would go back in a heartbeat!

My fav city in Canada is Calgary….lol I love it, its not too big yet (just over a million), we have a short drive out to the mountains. I love Vancouver too….bahahahah i love them both!! Best vacation so far would have to be when Steve and I did a road trip down the west coast of the US and then back up through Vegas, after that road trip he asked me to marry him!!!! We’ve been to a bunch of hot spots, peurto rico, mexico and dom rep but those were just laying on the beach…..well i loved mexico because my lil brothers Shawn and cousin Lester came with us. That was awesome! I’ve been to Europe but I can’t wait to go back, there sooooooo many places left to explore!! I want to see the whole world!!! :) :) :) THE WHOLE WORLD!!! LOL

Oh, I have so many favorite cities. A few include…Nashville, New York, San Fran, Chicago, Portland and Burlington, VT. Nashville prob tops the list for it’s beautiful scenery, the gorgeous homes, the amazing nightlife and being the home of country music.

My favorite city in the US is Boston but I’m biased cuz I live here :) After that I really like San Fran and Chicago. I am not a fan of New York city at all, but I know a lot of people are :) My favorite trip was a 5 week trip I took to Europe after college, but I also studied abroad in Australia so I am a lucky girl. I have no idea where I would go if I could go anywhere, so many choices!!!

I really want to do a tour of Alaska, likely self-guided.

Italy.
France.
Ireland & Scotland.
Spain.

… and now I’m going to find a few more jobs so I can fund these trips =)

I am heading to Vancouver for the first time next week!!!! I am so excited!!!

Although I am a little scared now because we rented a car and I don’t want it to be too hard to drive through…hopefully having GPS will help!!!

first, so sorry to hear how HOT it’s been where you are! it is pretty hot here in Cali but I don’t think we have gone over 100 degrees yet. 106 is just crazy! I would be whining too :) I prefer warm weather to cold, but hot hot heat is just no fun.

anyway, favorite city? hmm, I guess I have to say Washington DC because I loved the semester I spent there and wish I could go back. so much to see and do, and lots of history and culture and sightseeing like you said you like. I think I liked it so much because it was SO different from California.

favorite vacation? I loved the two cruises I went one, the first to the Caribbean and the second to the Mexican Riveria. just wonderful. cruises are the best because everything is taken care of. My trip to Maui last fall was pretty amazing too. You can’t not have fun when visiting Hawaii! And I actually like going in the ocean there (LA beaches are the prettiest, cleanest or clearest…).

vacation I would like to take? New York, for sure, and Denmark, which is kind of random but I’m Danish. really, I’d go anywhere in Europe. Or Australia… BUT the next trip I am planning to take is I am coming to Canada in September for a wedding! (which I told you about once before) I will be in Victoria. I am so excited! I have been to Vancouver before and though I don’t remember a lot of that trip, I DO remember that it WAS beautiful, like you say!

I’ve been on some pretty awesome vacations so its hard for me to decide. I think it might be my trip to Israel last summer, although that might be because its so recent.

And where to I want to go the most. Easily my top three are : Australia, Greece, and Egypt

I’ve really never experienced Canada correctly. I went to Western Washington University in Bellingham, WA about 20 minutes from the border. US drinking age = 21. Canadian drinking age = 19. That didn’t take long to figure out. And this was pre 9/11 so it was just a hop, skip and a jump to get over the border and into the nearest club. But now that my priorities have changed a bit I’m sure there are much more interesting ways to spend my time up there. :-) In fact, I’ve been meaning to plan a trip to Whistler forever, I’ve never been!

An African Safari certainly is a holiday you will remember for the rest of your life. Why not try Southern Africa? The people are friendly, the game reserves such as the Kruger National park, Etosha, Luangwe, Kgalagadi and the Okavango delta are excellent. Here you will be to able to view animals such as Lions, Elephants, Giraffes, Buffalos and many types of antelope in their natural habitat. The destinations are exciting and range from bushveld, savannas, deserts, mountains, forests to thousands of miles of pristine coastline where you can watch whales, fish, go sailing, scuba diving or simply enjoy a beach holiday. Why not include something adventurous such as a Hot Air Balloon Safari, white water rafting in the Zambezi river, an elephant safari or shark cage diving? Come and visit Southern Africa, it is a world of it’s own…
