Hello everyone! Today is the 20sb blog swap and I’ve been paired with Tiny Teacher from The Teacher Diaries. So head on over here to see my post for today on why I could never be a teacher! Also, please give the Tiny Teacher a warm welcome!
I am a Mafia Wars addict. Mafia Wars is this mob simulation game on facebook (that’s another addiction for another day) where you pretend to be a mobster and you make your way through the ranks. You get to “snuff” your opponents, find new weapons, give energy to your home grown “mafia” (your mafia consists of all of your friends who also play the game), buy property, and earn millions of dollars. I never thought that I would be one of *those* people who could spend hours in front of her computer playing a game that has no absolute relevance to the real world. I used to make fun of people who played computer games, for crying out loud!
And now I’m one of those people.
I stayed up for four hours last night playing Mafia Wars. Out of all the addictions that I’ve been known to have (none of them involving narcotics, prescription drugs, or alcohol, thank goodness), this one has to be the worst. I’m growing weak. I’m not eating. Showers take a backseat to snuffing one more mogul with some ridiculous name who I don’t even know. I once saw this episode of “Law and Order” where this criminal started his long descent to oblivion via a computer game on the internet.
I know I have an addiction, too. During my fourth and final hour of completing jobs and checking up on my “mafia status,” I realized that my health went from 112 to 85. Something was seriously amiss. When I checked my status, I realized that Don Mogul SexytimeAddict robbed my property, engaged me in a fight, and stole my money. It took all of my strength not to pick up my computer monitor and smash it on my hardwood floor.
This is only proof that my addiction should stop, right? Isn’t there someone I can speak to about said addiction? Some kind of Mafia Wars help group or something? Am I going to spend the rest of my summer vacation interacting with people who I’ve never even met or probably never ever want to meet in person? Uch. Not the way a 29 year-old should spend her life.
Amber here: I’m not much of a computer gamer myself, but Eric is an avid WoW player and my mom and my brother both LOVE computer games, too. What about you guys? Do you play computer games? Are you addicted to them?

so not a computer gamer! the only thing i’ve even remotely got involved in is the Wii sports – bowling, tennis, that kind of stuff. anything else. I’m like clueless. it’s not exciting to me… it gets frustrating. if i do play computer games it’s more like card games or sudoku if you can even call those computer games!
Nope, not really much for computer games, but I have heard that scrabble on Facebook is addictive, so I could see myself getting into that!
Last year I did sort of get mildly addicted to Webkinz… Have you heard of it? apparently it’s one of the most popular gifts for kid’s birthday parties. It’s a little stuffed animal that comes with a code – you put that code into a website & then you have this whole webkinz world. I got a wee bit addicted to some of those games, but broke the habit pretty quickly!
Haven’t played any computer games in a long time, not since XBOX and WII came along. I love the XBOX live golf game!
Hilarious! All my friends try to suck me in with that Facebook game and I refuse! Just not a gamer I guess. Great guest post!
i’ve heard a lot about the mafia wars things, but i’ve never tried it. i do play a lot of video games, but not online. i don’t like cluttering up my facebook with that stuff and then having my wall filled with updates from the game. i might have to try it now though…
Too funny. I don’t play any of those games on FB or anywhere else. My brother loves Bejeweled? Bedazzled? Jewel blitz ? Or some other game on FB. And a friend of mine from college who graduated #1 in his class from Harvard is a Mafia Wars ADDICT. Nice. LOL.
This post cracked me up. I used to play the wrestling game on Facebook but then I deleted it since I was playing too much. My boyfriend LOVES computer games and video games alike and as a result, I’m learning to love them. Ever since I won the Nintendo DSi a few weeks ago, I confess, I like gaming. More than I thought. Perhaps it’s because they aren’t necessarily computer games in the “conventional,” sense but they have crossword puzzle games, yoga instructor, how to cook, sudoku and much more. =)
I do play mobster (or mob wars) a little on both facebook and myspace. But I’m not really that addicted.
In terms of actual games, I do play Sims 3 sometimes. Although I can’t quite get into it as much as the first 2.
So thank you for reading! I cut my addiction down today! I didn’t join Gamers Anonymous or anything, either. Instead of playing FIVE games of Mafia Wars, I only played one. WOOT!
Amber, thank you so much for letting me be a guest on your blog this year. I’m following your blog religiously now
Keep in touch, please!
I am also addicted to Mafia Wars, however I have been able to go sometimes a few days at a time without it now because it made me angry as well. I also used to be really addicted to scrabble on facebook. Facebook is my number one addiction.
facebook is an addiction for me as well. i don’t understand how on earth i can have an addiction to my computer…
