Weekend update

- I started watching the first season of Gossip Girls this weekend. I’m obsessed.

- I’ve started joining a local trail running group for runs on Saturday mornings. This has been a challenge for me because a) the runs are at 7:00 am and b) we have been running for 60-80 minutes each time on hills with rocks and branches. It’s tough!

- This Saturday was a bit of a FAIL for me because I tripped and fell. A rock jumped out of nowhere at me, I swear! I now have a bruised knee.

- Then after doing 70 minutes of trail running (and falling) Saturday morning I got up early again Sunday morning to get in an 11-mile training run for my half at the end of this month! I did the 5:1 thing (5 minutes of running, 1 minute of walking). It was good and bad. Good because my knees and shins didn’t get sore from too much running and because I’d just done an intense run the day before and my legs were a bit tired. Bad because the whole 5:1 thing is a little too structured for me. At the beginning I wasn’t tired and didn’t want to stop and walk, at the end 5 minutes felt like FOREVER to run and continuously taking walking breaks made me realize just how sore my legs were so it was tough to start up running again after my minute of walking. Basically, I’m going to keep taking walking breaks, especially on my longer runs, but I’ll do it when my body says it’s time, not my watch!

Here’s a nice photo of the path that I was running along yesterday. It’s called “Rivers Trail” and it runs along the river in Kamloops, I’m not sure how long it is in total but I know it’s pretty big!

- After those two days of long/hard runs my body was tired, so I came home yesterday, had an ice bath and slept most of the day away! Webster apparently thought my ice bath was just a giant dish of water for him:

We then had a nap together, since I was exhausted and my legs felt like lead. I woke up to find Webster sleeping with me like this, he’s been sleeping up by my head quite a lot lately actually!:

- OK, so I’m officially joining the gym again. Even though I’ve been running I’m starting to feel kind of flabby and I’m sick of the 30-day shred, but here’s my dilemna: I need a weight/strength program to supplement my running. Right now I am running four times a week, I would like to do strength training three times a week (one time will fall on a day WITH running so I will still get one rest day a week) I’m looking for a full-body, 45-60 minute strength workout that will also enhance my running. ANY and ALL suggestions are welcome!

for the longest time — probably about 9 months, I used this book — Women’s Health — perfect body diet

http://www.amazon.com/Womens-Health-Perfect-Body-Diet/dp/1594867909

I skipped the food part — I’m not too crazy about following some meal plan — it’s just never been my style. but the 2nd half of the book has these different strength training stuff — and it usually does last for 45 to 60 minutes. and it KICKS your ass. there were some i hated doing, but some i liked doing, and there’s all kinds of exercises and it’s full body. I thought it was great. and you hardly get any rest inbetween your sets. yes. I was one of those girls that carried my book into the gym. I personally think you’ll love it.

Wow, you put on some mileage this weekend! I remember the feeling of your legs feeling like lead from my marathon training days!

I have yet to find a good strength training program that I like. My problem is that I am ridiculously self-conscious at the gym. I feel like everyone is watching me & judging my form or laughing at me for being the wimp I am! I know that is stupid, though. I think if I got into a routine, I’d be better about ignoring those feelings & I’d push through. You’ll have to do a follow up post & let us know what you are doing & how it’s working! My gym membership is on hold until September, but when I start my membership up again, I intend to really focus on strength training!

Good job on the runs!

I had to giggle at Webster - Marty does the same thing! Apparently my bath tub is just one big water bowl :P

ya I dont think I could run with that strict of a time schedule I would be looking at my watch the whole time! The trail running group sounds amazing!

I’m having the same prob with 30 day shred, it’s starting to bore me. Maybe I need to mix it up a little too. Congrats on joining the gym, too! I love running outside but sometimes knowing that you’re paying for the gym can be a motivator in itself!

I think strength training is really important to create strong leg muscles and give a balance to your upper body that isn’t getting that much of a workout when running. I like to do super setting, which usually means I do a mostly full body workout (but i don’t stick to a routine because that would get sooo boring to me. I just choose what machines I want to do on that day. So, back to the super setting. I’ll do 10-12 reps of a bicep curl and then maybe 10-12 of a tricep press (doing three sets of each). Or 10-12 squats/lunges and alternating it with a set of pushups or abs. Basically working two diff sets of muscles but not stopping in between and resting bc you don’t have to. Makes the workout go by a bit faster and gets more muscles moving and a little more fat burning since you’re not just sitting on a machine. You could also try a few sessions with a trainer just to get some suggestions.

Sometimes those rocks really do come out of nowhere!

At least you had a rock to blame it on. I was walking through Target and out of no where, I was on my butt.

My friend said “What did you fall on…?”
“That thing”
“There’s nothing in the aisle. We’re in an aisle of nothing…”

….(!!!)

I hope you’re feeling better and that the baths helped you out.

Does your gym offer a free personal training when you join, or some kind of introductory thing? That could be helpful. Otherwise I’m really no help, I’m lucky if I do 10 minutes of strength training haha.

I’m sorry to hear about your bruised knee. :s
I don’ t go to the gym (I run outdoors) so I am afraid I can’t contribute.
Your ice bath pic with Webster is too cute! :D

This post totally made me miss my cats :(

I almost fell yesterday whilst running outside and definitely had visions of faceplanting on the pavement… yikes.

12 Carissa June 15, 2009 at 9:21 PM

you are like super woman to me with all the running you do! sorry you fell though! ouch! I like when you said the rock just jumped out of nowhere… I’d blame it on the rock too :)

those pics of you and webster are seriously too cute. Hazel does the same thing. when I get out of the shower she runs to lick the water off my legs and sometimes she looks into the tub, almost like she is thinking, ‘what is mommy DOING in THERE?!’ haha. and she ALWAYS sleeps on my head. she did it last night! I just make sure there is some room on a pillow behind my head and we’re both happy :)

Libby sleeps like that too! Sometimes it gets on my nerves but most of the time it’s cute! ;)

look at you with all of your running! I’m so proud of you!

You are inspiring me… I need to overcome my 8am-5pm job plus studying after hours and just go to the darn gym. Or even run outside. I know I’m flabby and it’s making me sad =( I shall overcome. Somehow…

Keep up the good work and good luck with the weight routines. I have a lot of moves and stuff but not sure if they would be easy to explain via email!

You are so athletic! I love it and am jealous. I hate walking up stairs let alone running, haha.

I absolutely love GG! I hope you become as obsessed as the rest of us all are!

17 Jennifer June 18, 2009 at 10:26 PM

Webster could definitely double for my cat, Bentley!!

18 Anais July 6, 2009 at 11:15 AM

I TOTALLY forgot to wish you good luck for your marathon!!! Arg!!! :(

Anyways, I can’t believe it took you so long to start watching gossip girl :P I think it’s the equivalent of eating chocolate!!
