Mumble Jumble

First, thank you all so much for the AWESOME comments on my last two posts. Both posts I wrote from my own, opinionated stance, but all of your insightful comments really opened my eyes to different opinions and perspectives. Especially on the post about love. That’s one of my favourite parts about blogging, throwing something out there and hearing all the different ways that people interpret it!

This post will not be insightful at all because as I typed it last night I’d just got home from a 9-hour day at the office and my brain felt fried. I’ve been working lots, I still absolutely adore my internship, but each week gets busier! Which is good, but it leaves little time for blogging and blog reading.

I found out yesterday that since the agency I work at does contracted work I will not be getting tax deducted off my paycheques. It will be similar to a freelance writing job, I will get paid for my hours worked and it will be up to me to put money away to pay taxes at the end of the year. Welcome to the real world, Amber. I think at first it will be hard putting the extra money away every paycheque, but hopefully I’ll get used to it. I’m planning on putting away quite a bit so maybe I won’t have to use ALL of it when tax time comes. This also means that I have to start saving all my receipts as I may be able to write some things off, this will also be challenging for me as I usually just crumple my receipts or don’t even take them at all! This is what my career will be like for the rest of my life though so I better get used to it.

On Monday I went to a “Core” training class at the local YMCA with two ladies that I work with. Omg did it ever kick my butt! It was only a 45 minute class but we did over 100 squats and lunges! By the end of my day yesterday I was waddling more than walking. It was a shame because I was supposed to go for a small 5k run with a girl that I met in the trail running group that I run with every Saturday morning, but I had to cancel because I was THAT sore. Plus, with the half coming up I didn’t want to injure myself or push myself too hard. I was really looking forward to having a running partner so I’m bummed I had to cancel! We’re planning to reschedule soon though!

On that note, here’s a pic from one of our trail runs last weekend. It was such a pretty run and trail running really kicks my butt. It works totally different muscles than road running including your BRAIN! You really have to be aware of your surroundings when you’re on the trails or else a rock might jump out at you, oh wait, that already happened to me!

That’s me in the back and the girl that I was supposed to run with last night is wayy up there–that’s the other thing, she’s fast and I would have definitely slowed her down last night!

Whew, this post was a bunch of babbling, but that’s what’s happening with me lately! This weekend after the half I’m going to spend two days in Victoria visiting my friend Jen! I’ve never been to Victoria before so I’m REALLY looking forward to it. I’ll be working from Jen’s place on Monday and Tuesday, but it’ll still be a nice change of scenery from the office!

I remember taking a class in college called “HAT” - it stood for Hips, Abs, and Thighs. I was sore for days!! Hopefully the soreness will subside in the next couple of days so you feel fresh & ready for the half!

That trail run looks awesome. I really need to find a running club here to join. I tried joining one, but it wasn’t a good fit - one of the guys showed up wearing a kilt. I totally respect the Scottish culture, but I think running in a kilt is a little bit odd…

I’ve been meaning to look into what is offered at my local YMCA for awhile now. I need to get off my butt and just do it already! :-D

I do some accounting work for my mom - a real estate agent - who has to do the same thing as you (save money for taxes/save receipts for write offs). I started doing it for her last year just before tax time and it was a HUGE mess, so I am going to offer a LITTLE bit of advice:
Get yourself an accordion folder with 12 slots (for each month) and a little notebook or some sticky notes. For EVERY receipt (KEEP IT!!!) write a little note on it what it was for and put it in the correct month slot in your folder, then write yourself little notes for things you need/have written off. At the end of the year get ALL your receipts organized over the Christmas break and start tallying.

Then come tax time everything will be SO much easier to manage and if you have a little list of things you want/need for your business then you can use any extra money you have leftover from your taxes to pay for it, and then you can write it off the next year.

It sounds easy and it even seems like common sense…but if you let it slide ONCE, you are adding more difficulties for you down the road.
I can’t tell you how much easier it was at tax time for my mom this year!!!

I am so bad at keeping receipts and such so I am glad I don’t have to deal with that. The one time I got a freelance check it was such a pain in the ass because come tax time, it seemed like I got taxed almost as much as I made! But to be honest, my mom always does my taxes :) I know one day soon she will be like, nope, you have to do it yourself and I will be totally confused!! I am so not good when it comes to money stuff.

anyhoo, hope you have fun in Victoria! I am actually going to a wedding at Hatley Castle in September so I will be visiting Victoria for the first time pretty soon too! I still have to get my hotel lined up so maybe if you have any suggestions you can send ‘em my way! :)

Ah, the run looks so pretty and relaxing! And I LOVE Victoria. So beautiful. I’ve been there a few times with my family and once for a summer lacrosse tournament with my college team. And I love the fact that it’s on the water.

What gorgeous scenery you have. I’m incredibly jealous. I wish I could run outside but with heat indices of 110 F right now, it’s not possible. To the gym I must go =)

Glad your internship is going well!

That Core class sound like fun. I wish I had somewhere nice like that to run in Winnipeg…but I have to go home to the lake to get decent scenery :P haha

I have to admit that my dad still does my taxes. I’m thinking about doing mine next year, but we’ll see. At least if I do I won’t have to worry about saying money to pay taxes with. I can’t see myself handling that well.

Those trails look soooooo beautiful!!! I should check out and see if there’s any trail running in my area…Although I always quasi twist my ankle when I run on the grass next to the sidewalk so it might not be such a great idea for me :P
