Metabolic Enhancement Training

I’ve done a lot of different workouts. Body sculpting classes, yoga, bikram yoga, step aerobics, weight training, spinning, plyometrics and running among other things. I played hockey for six years and was subjected to some of the hardest workouts I’ve ever done in my life; where you literally want to puke.

No workout has ever made me puke, yet. But last night I did one of the hardest workouts I’ve done in a long, long time.

As you know I’m back in my hometown for a couple of weeks and last night I decided to go check out this new class at the gym I’ve been going to since I was 13 years old. The owner is a good friend of my mom’s and she’s a professional body builder who’s been featured in Oxygen magazine. She doesn’t usually teach classes, but she started offering this class at the end of last summer and she teaches it. The class is called Advanced M.E.T’s or “Advanced Metabolic Enhancement Training”.

Metabolic Enhancement Training, which is what MET stands for, is strength and/or conditioning exercises performed with the intention of increasing the capacity and efficiency of the energy pathways to store and deliver energy for activity. Metabolic Enhancement Training (MET) consists of functional movements and traditional movements, as well as any exercise that gets the job done in sequences or Circuits to stimulate metabolism. MET uses integrated movements from all sports training that involve acceleration, stabilization and deceleration and improve movement ability, core strength and neuromuscular efficiency. It comes from everywhere – from the schoolyard play of children to advanced biomechanics.

Basically, I would compare it to doing level 3 of the 30-day shred for 50 minutes straight. We were doing squat jumps, mountain climbers, pushups, skater jumps and many more exercises. It was a continuous circuit, where we spent 45 seconds at each station and we did it three times. It was SO. HARD.

So hard that I actually wanted to cry. At one of the stations we had to but a resistance belt on and they would pull on it as we did mountain climbers against the resistance. I was sweating so much that the floor was all slippery and my hands were sliding all over the place. By the third circuit my quads were screaming at me.

When she yelled “halfway!” I thought I was going to break down and start crying right there. How could I only be halfway through? My legs felt like they were going to fall off!

At one point she stopped us from doing the circuit, made us all come to the middle and hold the plank staff pose for a minute. I couldn’t do it, I had to drop to my knees, but I held it for about 20 seconds from my feet and another 40 from my knees. It was intense.

I was already sore when from a lower-level body sculpt class that I did on Monday so I KNOW I’m going to be hurting tomorrow morning. I wanted to work my body really hard this week because next week is the last week before the halfer and I’m apparently supposed to be “tapering”. For all you runners out there, does “tapering” mean that I don’t do any other workouts other than running, or can I get away with the 20-minute 30-day shred on my non-running days next week?

Wow that sounds intense. I slept from 8 pm last night til 6 am this morning. I’m all caught up on my sleep now!!!

I wish i knew the answer about the tapering. I’m sure you can include your other work outs. I think tapering is just reducing your miles, not your entire work out plan.

Wow girl that class sounds like a serious butt kicking!

As far as tapering, you definitely want to reduce the miles. I would also suggest maybe doing Jillian on a lower level. You want to be building some glycogen stores in your muscles so your legs are ready to run on race day. So don’t burn out too much in taper!

that sounds like an intense class! i don’t know about working out so hard i want to cry, but i sometimes push myself a little to hard and think i’m going to puke. did that a couple of times during the race sunday.

Wow that does sound intense. I’ve never done a work out at the gym before that intense, but I’ve spent one too many preseasons with a psycho college coach that has made me feel like that. It doesn’t matter how much you trained, if this guy was in a bad mood (which he was most of the time), we knew it. Thankfully he was gone after my Junior year and I could enjoy my senior year.

Congrats on finishing it though!

That kind of training is what my old personal trainer had me do. I hated the resistance belt crap when doing mountain climbers but we did those. I hated it at first but then I started to enjoy pushing myself as much as possible.

Good luck with the tapering, I can’t help you there!

I LOVE stuff like that!!! Seriously, it sounds pretty killer though!!

One of the P90X videos is SOMETHING like that (it doesn’t sound AS intense though)- it’s called plyometrics and it’s all jump squats and what not and they are done for 30 seconds each, 4 exercises per round, then the whole round is repeated and you get a 30 second break…it’s friggin AMAZING!!! And I think it helps keep you motivated, the guy says in the video (and it’s true) ANYBODY can do ANYTHING for 30 seconds…

Sounds like your trainer was super awesome!!! I bet you felt great for finishing it!!!!!

I did a class called “Body Attack” that sounds pretty similar to this. Yeah, pretty much wanted to cry!! I’m glad you made it through, you’re awesome!!

You are so brave for posting that pic! I’m taking a step aerobics class on campus this term and it kicks my ass everytime! I always get in a good 40 minutes of cardio and then the instructor moves on to abs and I always want to cry. I hate abs and boy does she push me!

Sounds pretty intense, but good! The rule of thumb according to all training guides I’ve read is that tapering means that on those days where you normally would have done light xtraining/weight lifting, you shouldn’t do anything. But I’m not going to tell you to stop bc lord knows I don’t always follow the rules. :)

Cry? No. Want to puke? Oh yeah! When I push myself (probably to much :) in a long run or intense spinning class I have wanted to/almost puked. I have never actually done it though… (knock on wood)

You’re such a trooper. You make a workout look good. I wouldn’t be able to muster up the energy to smile for a picture. My picture would feature me lying in a pool of my own sweat and vomit. It would look similar to a crime scene.

That sounds SO intense, wow. But isn’t it amazing that you made it through?

When we did tapering for cross country, we’d do light strength workouts and short runs. Nothing very strenuous, at least compared to this week. You want your body to be itching for a hard run when you start your race, is the idea.

Dude, that was an intense and (scary?) class! I’m sorry you were feeling that way throughout your class… I’m glad you were able to get through it, maybe not in tip top shape, but you got through it!

My work schedule is hectic, so I can’t go to any classes at my local gym. I’ve thought about the 30-day shred video you have mentioned… is it really that good??

In high school I had a soccer coach whose boyfriend was training to be a firefighter. He would come home and complain about what they made him do, and she’d have us do it at our next practice. I think he stopped telling her the workouts he’d was doing, since if it was hard for him, he couldn’t imagine don’t it as a high school girl.
