Welcome, Nora from Walking through the rain. I adore her blog, it always makes me smile or puts me in a good mood. If you’re not reading it already, you should be! She has graciously offered to guest blog for me and tell us all a list of life lessons, from unexpected places, that I’m sure we all can relate to! I know I can!
A most random list of life lessons, comfort and advice I’ve learned from various sources over the years. (A huge thanks to Amber for asking me to guest post for her this week.)
…From watching Sex & the City:
- Dating a bunch of idiots before you meet the man for you is inevitable
- Men really do lick your face when they kiss you. It’s happened to me twice, on two different dates, with two different guys. Clearly they didn’t get the memo on how to properly kiss a woman
- It’s totally acceptable to wear a colored bra underneath a white t-shirt. Now if only I had the guts to do it in real life
- One of the best ways to get over a relationship is a night out with the girls
- The only thing worse than being broke-up with on a post-it note is being broken up with via MySpace relationship status changing. (Yes, it happened to me!)
- Your night in shining armor will show up when you least expect it
- Having a solid group of friends to rely on, no matter where they live, is key to getting through the curveballs life throws you
- The show writers and producers were incredibly talented at hitting on the real life moments when it comes to relationships. I can relate every single episode to my life in some way. That’s either sad or the sign of a really well-written show.
…From being a bridesmaid eight times:
- Sometimes the bride needs to be protected from her other bridesmaids, family and fiance. As a result I offer to be in charge of their cell phone starting the day of the rehearsal dinner through the ceremony. Last thing the bride needs is to be distracted right before her big day
- The best part of the wedding is when the groom sees the bride for the first time; his face says it all
- I will cry at each wedding I’ve attended (15 and counting)
- The success of the reception can be determined by how delicious the cake is
- Single groomsmen will always try to hook up with the single bridesmaids
- Comfortable shoes to match the dress are essential. Bonus if you can purchase shoes that are reusable
- It’s nearly impossible for the bride to choose a dress that you can repurpose
- Standing up at the alter with your friend on one of the most important days of her life is a real blessing and privilege
- The bride loves it when you send the photos you took of the wedding to her on a CD. Even if the photographer takes 7,000 pictures during the ceremony and reception, the candids are the best
…. From Blogging:
- You will “meet” some of the most inspiring, amazing people through blogland
- If you ever need support on a different level than your “real life,” friends can provide? Turn to your blog friends.
- The number of people who read and comment on your blog is suddenly important to you
- It is almost easier to be honest with yourself in a blog post than it is in an actual discussion with real life friends and family
- Innovative, fun posts oddly become a priority
- A high number of unread posts in Google Reader can cause undue stress causing you to hit “mark all as read”
- The blogosphere is full of positive energy and hope that the world really needs; it never ceases to amaze me
- It is one of the best creative environments, socially freeing, supportive friends and advice provide out there
What have you learned from your favorite TV show, real-life experiences and the blogosphere?

so true — repurposing a bridesmaid dress, not possible. and the cd thing is right, who doesn’t love that!
and about blogging, I have a few people tat don’t understand why I blog, but I do. Even though I don’t have a huge range of readers or anything, but the people who do read them, even though i’ve never met them, i think they just help me see things through other people’s eyes and make my life that much better!
I’ll be a bridesmaid for the 8th time this summer, so I totally know what Nora is talking about!!! I think it’s my 8th and final time, though. And yes, none of the dresses will ever be reworm and most have been donated to goodwill…
SATC is totally my go-to for getting through break ups, etc. One of my favorite lines is from an episode where Carrie says, ‘Why are we shoulding all over ourselves?’ It’s so true - at least for me. I am always saying - I should be dating someone by now. I should be getting married like all of my friends are. But then I realize that stuff is out of my control and I try to stop starting sentences with “I should.”
great lists! i love SATC, weddings, and blogging. yes, i’m just that much of a woman.
Those comments about sex and the city were spot on
LOVE that show! I’ve seen every episode about 10 times, and about every 3 months I feel the need to watch them again
It’s coming up
Amber: did you get my email?
Thanks again, Amber, for letting me guest post for you! Glad your readers enjoyed it. I’ll have to check out their blogs!
Love this post! I’ve never been a bridesmaid. Bah, humbug =P
Okay, wow. I love this post. Great blog
OH dear….there are a few embarassing moments that Carrie went through during her relationships on Sex and the City that have actually helped me in the same situations! LOL I went to a Catholic school where they didn’t teach us much..I am too embarassed to say…but if you watch the show you know she’s had a few embarassing moments!
this is a great, great list! i would reach one and nod. lol you must be the most thoughtful bridesmaid ever. next time i’m in a wedding i will remember the things in this list!
i have no idea what i did before my blog friends. they are wonderful, supportive and inspirational!
Cute! I love the shout-out to blog friends (I’m still making ‘em!) and also, this post makes me want to be a bridesmaid.

I agree, I can almost always relate to SATC!! Love that show.
love the life lessons from SATC! I, like you, can pretty much relate every episode to MY life too! haha.
P.S. The post-it note episode is my absolute favorite!! for so many quotable reasons like when Carrie says the day will now be known as “the day I got arrested for smoking a doobie!”
I love this post, there are some great lessons there. “Having a solid group of friends to rely on, no matter where they live, is key to getting through the curveballs life throws you”.
And I haven’t watched sex and the city… am I missing something?
