Nutella: My worst enemy
Review of last week: I ran 13 miles last week and swam 4500 metres. Eating was pretty good, for the most part I stuck to the schedule but went a little overboard two days and REALLY overboard yesterday.
Before explaining the title I need to get some exciting news out of the way. You know that half-marathon I’ve been training for and talking about? Well I have a little confession to make, I hadn’t exactly signed up for it. Until Friday, I finally bit the bullet and signed up for it. It helps that Eric’s cousin Katrina, you guys know her as Anonymous, and her fiancée Steve decided to sign up too, so now I had running partners. Well, I mentioned this to Eric on Friday morning while at school and he was like, “maybe I’ll do it too.” I laughed. Ya right, I thought.
But he was serious! So when we got home from school we BOTH signed up for the BMO half-marathon in Vancouver on May 3. We’re numbers 7049 and 7050! I’m SOOO excited. Of course, when I got up to go for my 5.5 mile run on Saturday morning Eric is still lying in bed and he says, “I have three months I don’t have to start training yet.” He’s a natural athlete, I work out all. the. time. and the odd time he does come out for a run with me he totally kicks my butt!
Speaking of kicking my butt that’s exactly what my run Saturday morning did to me. For those of you that don’t know, the city of Kamloops is in a valley and as it’s expanded over the years it’s started making it’s way up the hills surrounding it. Well, our apartment is smack dab in the middle of one of those hills, so to get anywhere from our apartment you can either downhill or uphill. Usually I bus it down to the university and do my outdoor runs from there because it’s a lot flatter, but it’s soo much more convenient to be able to run straight from my house, so that’s what I did. Well, the first two miles or so were straight uphill. I kept telling myself, ‘what goes up must come down’ to stay motivated. Then before I knew it I was racing downhill and thinking ‘what goes down must come up’ my whole entire run was either downhill or uphill. I walked a bit because let me tell you after going uphill for a mile or so I was pretty much ready to die. I did the whole 5.5 miles in 64 minutes which I don’t think is too bad considering over half of the run was uphill and I did walk a lot. Here’s a photo I took on my cell phone when I was at the highest point in the run!

OK, so onto the title. Eric and I did our big, monthly, grocery-shopping trip to Save-on yesterday where we stocked up on all the necessities. I needed some more peanut butter as my jar was almost empty and I also wanted to pick up some almond butter since everyone in the blogosphere as been raving about it. So we’re in the nut-butters/jams aisle and I’ve got my peanut butter (Kraft, 25% less-fat) and I’m looking for almond butter and the conversation goes like this:
Eric: “Ooooh Nutella! Wanna get that?”
Me: My mind goes into panic-mode. I have absolutely NO willpower when it comes to Nutella, it’s the most god-like substance I’ve ever put in my mouth. “I dunno, I guess we can get it if you want it…”
Eric: “Ya, OK,” and he puts it in the cart.
We got home from the grocery store, I put all the groceries away, chopped up the vegetables and put them in the fridge, baked some delicious oatmeal ‘yoga’ cookies that I got from Ashley’s blog, and then I ate six tablespoons of Nutella, straight out of the jar.
And that’s why I don’t buy Nutella.

LMAO I had to read that last part a few times!!! 6 tablespoons!!! you are my hero!! LOL I can’t say that we love nutella that much, I prefer organic peanut butter. We’ve had a jar of nutella for like two years now….and its just steve that eats it…oh and my mom when she comes. (keeping a two year old jar of nutella probably isn’t good lol) My badness is sauces, I like sauces on everything!!! So i’m trying to cut down on the sauces *_*
Steve and I are pretty pumped for the half marathon! Of course I have my moments of WTF am I thinking lol But its something I always wanted to do, so why not do it on my bday. Despite my cold I had a great run yesterday, ran 4 miles, walked 1mile and then ran 1.25miles….that’s been my best run so far!!!

Hey girl, YEEAAHH we’re on the same team!
GO TEAM BLACK!
I’m a LITTLE confused as to how this challenge is all working, but I’m excited none the less.

I am running a 1/2 marathon the same weekend that you are – mine is on May 4th! Happy training!
I actually don't really like Nutella all that much… unless it is on a crepe w/ bananas. I went to Paris last summer and could have LIVED on crepes w/ Nutella & bananas. Seriously. I had all sorts of differents foods while I was there for 3 weeks, but my favorite has to be the crepes from the little street vendors! Yummy!!
Good job on your run! Will your 1/2 course be hilly? Mine will be relatively flat (thank God) but I did a marathon in '06 and it was not flat and it kicked my arse….
How are the mizuno's working out? Still having the foot throbbing trouble?
Girl please! No worries, I honestly can’t buy that kind of stuff. I can go through half a JAR in one sitting. I say will power to you for stopping at 3 servings! and CONGRATS on signing up!!! That is such a great feeling I’m sure! It’s like committing yourself already to training.
Congrats on signing up for the half! One of these days I’m going to locate someone to run with and sign up for a marathon of my own
I love Nutella, but I’m sort of a snob about processed foods and for me that falls right into the category of crap I rarely touch. Still, if I’m going to eat it I’m going to do it right – as an oatmeal topping
Glad you signed up!!
And the Nutella part is PRICELESS!! “God-like substance I’ve ever put in my mouth”… that’s just great writing!!
congrats on signing up! and i’m glad you tried out the yoga cookies
girl, nutella gets me good everytime too! i would buy it at school, and it would be gone faster than you could ever imagine. I can’t buy it or i’ll finish is sooo fast. it really is the most delicious thing on the planet
I had the opposite dilemma at the store this weekend…I’m not really into peanuts/peanut butter but I love almonds. I stared at the almond butter and it looked so icky in the jar. I passed it up, but next time I’ll be brave and throw it in the cart
Thank GOD I hate nutella. Seriously.
(Ok MAYBE I like it now, but I didn’t as a kid, and I don’t want to let myself re-try it incase I go off the deep end.)
I was like that with PB for a while in Uni though (I realized I’d eaten a huge jar with a 4pack box of saltines in about a week or two. This is pretty much the sole reason I gained the freshman 15. Oh and the beer. whoops.) so I stopped eating PB for many years. Now I’m ok with it again and only have it every few weeks.
You with peanut butter is me with ice cream. I bought two pints yesterday in a 2/$4 sale and was like “okay, I can stretch these out”. Today I have a half-pint left. I am so pathetic when it comes to ice cream but once I get started I must.have.more.
And running hills is actually good for you, it works a different set of muscles than running distance does (hill-training is more like sprinting, muscle-wise). I’d be worried about your boyfriend though – 3 months is NOT a long time to train for a long-distance event. Good luck to you both

I love Nutella too! It’s so dangerous in my house!
congrats on signing up for the half marathon! you are seriously amazing. I can’t even imagine running as much as you do! I have asthma, which makes it a bit difficult, but also, as I have mentioned, I am so unmotivated when it comes to working out. But that picture you took is beautiful. Maybe if it looked like that where I live I would run
I also am obsessed with Nutella, and I too have had to stop buying it. I love it! but my friends don’t understand why. Usually I would just make a Nutella sandwich, but there were many times where I just ate a spoonful straight out of the jar too! So bad! But so good!
lol!!! girl, you are not alone!! nutella is super addicting!
