It was about this time, three years ago, that I began fantasizing about my graduation and prom. It was also around this time that I found my prom dress in Prince George, B.C. while there for a hockey tournament.
I didn’t think I wanted a poufy, princessy dress but I really didn’t have much of a vision in mind. As soon as I tried on my dress, I LOVED it and had to have it. So, my dad coughed up the money and I had a beautiful dress by the end of January 2006 even though Prom wasn’t until May 27, 2006!
There was one problem. It didn’t fit properly. The dress was a size 12, and it fit well everywhere but in my chest area. You see, I am very much a pear shape with a big booty and very tiny boobs. Apparently the dress makers assumed if you’re a size 12 then your boobs MUST be at least a D cup or bigger, so the dress kind of fell off me in that area. Thank god for my grandma and great-aunt. They must have put 12 + hours of work into making that dress fit me. The top of it was covered in tiny little beads so in order to take it in and make it fit tighter they had to take ALL the little beads off and then hand-sew them back on! However, in the process they managed to figure out a way to make my boobs look way bigger than they are in the dress, so that was nice!
From the beginning of April until the end of May, ALL my girlfriends and me could ta
lk about was prom. Oh, maybe I should explain something quickly here. In Fort St. John, where I grew up and graduated, prom and grad are completely separate things. Prom takes place on the last Saturday in May and it is a big dance/dinner at the curling rink. Our grad takes place at the end of June and is a totally separate thing. The after-prom party is our ‘wet grad’, usually one of the graduating class volunteers there house (and they usually live out-of-town) and they have a huge after-party. There were parents there chaperoning and making sure nobody drinks and drives, they hired a DJ, and they had a HUGE field out behind their house so lots of people tented! I partied there from about midnight to 8 a.m. the following morning. It was such a fun night! That’s me and my BFF Michele at the after-party.
Since prom isn’t squeezed in on the same day as grad and the grand march and everything then it kind of becomes a much bigger deal because your whole day is devoted to it. I started my day off bright and early at 9 a.m. when I headed to the gym for my last work-out with my personal trainer, that’s right, I hired a personal trainer to help me get ready for prom. Prom was actually the last time I weighed what I do now, I started gaining weight right after prom. Then at about 12:30 p.m. I went and got my hair done and then a few of my girlfriends came over to my house and we had snacks, did our makeup, and got dressed, then we took pictures in the backyard! Eric was my prom date even though we technically weren’t together at that time; we dated for 11-months, broke up for five and then got back together and have been together since (another story for another time). Anyhow, there was no one else I wanted to take me so I asked Eric and he said yes! He was such a gentleman, he opened doors for me
ALL night and stood for hours of pictures without complaining and he even danced TWO slow dances with me, and Eric is not the dancing type at all. He was the best prom date a girl could ask for. This is the picture we got taken by the professional photographer, isn’t Eric handsome!!
I’m sure we put so much thought and discussion into prom that we were all letdown when it wasn’t the ‘perfect’ experience but really we’d placed the night on a pedestal and I don’t think anything could have lived up to our expectations! Overall, my prom was great and I have happy memories when I look back on it! I cannot believe it was almost three years ago. Feels like yesterday sometimes.
This is my favourite picture of Eric and me. I have it framed by our bed

Amber, you are STUNNING!!!! That is one of the most gorgeous prom dresses I have ever seen and you just glowed!!!
We do our grad and prom on the same day and it was so horribly rushed…I remember hugging everybody and everything and then rushing off to get my hair done!! (I also hugged my future husband for the first time that day - he SHOULD have asked me to prom, but he was too shy, even he admits that!!). My dress was dark red with a black shimmer to it, and lace overlay on the bodice, the straps were rhinestones…I loved it!!! Grad was such a huge milestone for me…I left a lot of the old me behind in high school…thanks for reminiscing with us Amber!!!
I’ve seen these pics before, you two look awesome!!!!! They kinda look like wedding pics!! ;p
I didn’t go to prom, I was sad about it but what can ya do. I remember on grad day Eric’s dad, Uncle Danny came over to our house and took us all out fishing or something. Uncle Danny is like my second dad, he always took all the kids on little adventures. Good times for sure!
Oh wow, how exciting! I went to my junior prom and the experience was so awful, I decided not to go to my senior prom. It was really that bad. I should write a post about that. I loved getting pampered and prettied, but by the end of the night it just sucked.
My prom was similar to yours, alot of Hype.! but mine, on the other hand didnt turn out a fairy tail!! to make a long story short, my bf (at the time, lets make that clear AT THE TIME) took me to my grad, only to humiliate me at the end of the night, but letting me go home to his house, alone & upset… morning comes & he is having a lovley sleep over with some skank that was at the after party…. gee whiz, if i blogged, that would be a 5 page story on our relationship…! but regarldess of the crappy ending to the night, it was perfect!!! seroiusly!! couldnt have asked for a better time, (excluding the end ) Love your dress & eric does look handsome .. dont tell him that though, it will go to his head

haha, my prom was in 1993. i wore a sleek satin dress… no actually it was my chorus tux. we also do prom mid-april, grad first of june. I took my high school sweetheart, we had 3 proms to go to that year. broke up after the 3rd one and i haven’t seen her since. I heard she got married and had couple of kids, though.
I also went to a magnet school for music, so that had a prom as well. but since it was a magenet school, we had a 70’s theme to that prom. it was a ton of fun. i even found (and posted) a pic of me and the high school sweetheart from that prom at http://trainingsmoker.blogspot.com/2008/10/halloween-is-here.html with some halloween pics. it’s pretty funny.
so those pics are only like 2 years old, huh? how cute! good post.

Your prom reminds me so much of my junior prom (at our school, juniors AND seniors went to prom so I got to go twice). I thought I wanted a sleek dress, but I ended up with this big puffy concoction in berry pink and it was gorgeous. It was a big big in the boobs because I lost weight from when I bought it in January to prom in April (at the height of track season). I am now dating the guy I went with- I was originally going with just female friends but a week before prom I asked him if he wanted to go with me (jokingly, actually) and he said yes! And the night was perfect. The now-bf was such a gentleman all night that I’m pretty sure it was the reason we started dating. I get so happy thinking about it, almost three years later

love the pics! your dress reminds me of mine– big and beautiful!
I actually went to prom twice. first time I was a junior and I went with my senior bf to his prom. second time I went with my crush, who actually went to a different school but he went to my prom. both times were fun but very different since one was with a steady boyfriend and one was with a guy I liked. but both guys were perfect gentlemen, danced all night, took the pics, the whole shebang. oh how I miss getting dolled up for formal dances… guess that’s part of the reason I joined a sorority in college
You look so lovely! What a great dress!
Awww, I absolutely love this post! How sweet. You look gorgeous and like a princess!
I posted a picture of my prom dress a few days ago: http://classyinphilly.blogspot.com/2009/01/classy-girls-love-getting-formal.html
I loved my prom dress and you are so right: we hyped prom up so much, but it pretty much lived up to my expectations because I was so in love with my boyfriend at the time.
Our prom is on a seperate day from graduation. Grad is usually about a week later.
