The newspaper life

I’ve joined the ranks of millions of people who blog at work. I’m sitting at the paper waiting for 4 p.m. to roll around when this guy is supposed to call me back so I can write my story and go to work at the restaurant at 5:30. Joy.

That’s one thing about this job, you’re always waiting for people to call you back. Always. I’m becoming an expert voicemail-leaver.

“Hello, this is Amber Yake calling with the Alaska Highway News, I just have a few questions to ask you regarding _________ could you please call me back at 250 785 5631 or on my cell at 250 318 6414.”
Yup, I say that about 1000 times a day, I just get to fill in the blank differently each time. Fun.. No, actually in all seriousness I’m really enjoying this. I’ve written 2.5 stories so far. Two of them were news releases that I had to sit at my desk summarizing–basically the news release comes off the wire and I (or whoever) has to re-word it so the public can understand it and make a few phone-calls to get quotes. Not always the funnest thing, especially when it’s about the ‘long-term vision for B.C.’s electricity needs’, what I’m working on today.
Yesterday, I wrote a story about the relocation of the women’s resource society here in FSJ. I got to go to the new building, interview a few ladies and take a couple pictures! It was great. That’s the thing I love about this job, I get to interact with new people all the time and I’m constantly learning new things. I had no idea that FSJ had an outreach centre like that, when I was in my 2nd year of college at GPRC I did some volunteering at a outreach centre in GP, it was crazy. Very eye-opening.
Oh, and today I got sent to do a ‘streeter’ which means you ask random people on the street a question and get their name and photo for the paper. I cheated a little, I used  my friend Tiffany, Eric and his cousin Lester for three out of four people. In my defence, I originally asked Tiffany and three randoms and two of the randoms photo’s didn’t turn out so I had to get new ones, this led to using Eric and his cousin. Hehe..
Anyways, to sum it up I’m pretty excited about my chosen career. It feels good to know you’re on the right path, especially when you’ve put this much hard work into it! Now I just can’t wait to get paid to do this stuff. Only 1.5 more years. Only.

Okay this guy I’m waiting to call me back is supposed to call in six minutes, so I better finish preparing the interview! Toodles.
What’s your career/job? Do you love it or hate it? (I LOVE it when you guys comment so please do!!!)
Update: It’s now three minutes past when he was supposed to call and he has not yet! Grr…

So Shawn's dismal summarizing seminars DID come in handy?! haha.

Sounds exciting. It will be great for your portfolio.

Hopefully you're able to get some R&R time in too.

i dont have a carrer, but i wish i did..!! i need to get on that. I like my job sometimes, i wish i had more interaction with people (not dorks) rather than sitting at my boring desk pretending to work. (facebook, online shopping, amber alert) i like my other job too, but that can be a bit dramatic at times. I really do want a career, but im not sure yet on what.
    ps.MISS YOU!!!
